Gingrich makes return visit to Delaware

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich returned to Delaware on Wednesday, hoping a victory in the state's primary on Tuesday will lend credibility to his flagging presidential campaign and his plans to shape the Republican national platform.

Gingrich visited Delmarva Christian High School in Georgetown on Wednesday afternoon, followed by an evening appearance in Wilmington at a meeting of the Delaware Rail Splitter Society, an independent Republican organization named in honor of Abraham Lincoln.

Gingrich told a crowd of more than 100 people in Wilmington that re-electing President Obama would be "a disaster of the first order."

He also reiterated his calls for American energy independence, a national brain research effort, and the need to reform Washington politics and the federal government.

Gingrich said a win in Delaware could shake up the current popular narrative that former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the inevitable GOP nominee. He said voters in Delaware, Rhode Island, New York and Pennsylvania, which also hold primary elections next Tuesday, have the right to decide for themselves who they think the nominee should be.

"If we do win Delaware, it will break up the media narrative," Gingrich said, noting that he was written off by many political observers last year before polls showed him briefly jumping toward the head of the GOP field.

Responding to questions from the audience, Gingrich admitted that he had been wrong to support the creation of the U.S. Department of Education during the Carter administration but that he did so after a teacher told him it could help improve public education.

"It was a mistake," he said. "... The truth is, it's been a disaster, and I would shrink it radically and return power to the states."

Gingrich also took aim at what he suggested was the triviality that characterizes modern political campaigns, taking aim specifically at online jousting Wednesday between Obama adviser David Axelrod and the Romney campaign over which candidate better loves dogs.

Democrats have criticized Romney for once putting his dog in a crate on top of the family car during a vacation trip, while Obama has been the subject of talk about an excerpt in his autobiography explaining how he was introduced to dog meat while growing up in Indonesia.

"It's just utterly stupid," Gingrich said.

"This is a country with really big problems," he added. "I believe the American people are hungry for leadership that transcends the normal junk."

He called me a lady infers I’m a soccer mom when I’m 80 years old and have my stuff in Reagans library . Although he does post Newts stuff. He is a smart ass and does pull the I’m smarter than you krap off so he might be working for a tenure at some lib college. For his rebuttal tactics are Alinsky’s .

Pat, I’ll be dumb for O’Donnell and/or for Newt ANYTIME!

Thanks to those now-out-of-the GOP-power structure bluebloods, we got that idiot Coons instead of a solid conservative in Christine. Who knew that Coons wanted to repeal DADT?

The missus and I were at the 9-11 meeting in Millsboro; got to speak to Newt and Callista, and the missus got her picture taken with them. Wonderful, warm people.

Delaware never seems to matter to the politicians. Even Biden said in 2008 he was from Scranton PA, never that he was from Delaware. For Newt to invest so much time here is very much appreciated by us here in DE.

Maybe I’ll run into you hop skipping and jumping to the polls next Tuesday here. Good to “see” you.

Onyx, you pegged it about the GOP-E Republicans. We call ‘em the Mike Castle bluebloods.

Even though Christine O’Donnell lost in 2010 after her primary upset, it exposed the complete corruption of the GOP-E structure here and all the top ones were ousted.

Luckily, I live in Southern DE, which is very conservative and has a distinctly Southern flavor and culture(we are bounded on two sides by the Mason Dixon line!). Lots of excitement for Newt here.

It is going to be by word of mouth. Talking to folks tonight, everyone agrees that Newt is our only means to thwart Romney, who is known here as not being conservative or even Republican.

Newt pegged it on his visit to Millsboro on 4/5—Delaware is a small state where everyone knows everyone it seems. I’m a transplant from NJ, so it was a little culture shock moving here, but it what I was looking for. The whole state is like a small town and the family/friend connections would make an Etch-a-Sketch screen turn solid black!

Thanks for the encouragement and pray with us that DE would once again be “The First State” in getting Newt on the path to Tampa.

JJ, northern DE is hopelessly Dem. That is where the largest part of the population resides.

As you go south, the state has fewer people but they are more conservative. The blue turns to purple in Dover, the capital, about half way down the state.

When you get to God’s country where I live ( ;) )in Sussex County , it is mostly conservative with lib enclaves at the beach areas. Lots of folks from DC and Baltimore retire here—with low taxes and proximity to beautiful beaches, it is a great place to retire!

But don’t tell anybody, OK!!!!!!!!

Aha! Your name is perfect = Mike Castle Republicans...LOL.

You betcha I'm praying with "y'all" and will continue praying. Word of mouth is best. Keep it under the radar to catch the CastleGOP off guard. No need to alert Romney to run his vicious attack ads (again).

Thanks for the encouragement and pray with us that DE would once again be “The First State” in getting Newt on the path to Tampa.

I believe in and pray for miracles.

True, but I think the problem was more general in nature, the whole GOP-E had it in for her.

I was forever in deep doo-doo with the DE GOP hierarchy because I absolutely REFUSED to support Castle. I did not support his Dem opponents, but would not put my name to anything in public support. I was able to get away with it mostly because I was in Dover and was on exec committee of in my district and was always willing to fill in when needed.

I used to like Mike personally not politically, but never forgave him for stabbing Janet Rzwenicki(sp?)in the back when she ran against Carper to replace him as Governor.

Thanks, Gabz, for that background. My experience is only recent, but it looks like Mike Castle has some experience in being a backstabber.

He was the epitome of a SoreLoserman in 2010.

BTW, good to “see” you around again.
