Alderon’s Revenge, my first and only attempt at launching a self designed and built three stage rocket also failed. As it gained altitude on the first stage, it veered off the vertical and when the second stage ignited turned parallel to the ground, directed toward the picnic area on the nearby hillside. The third stage fired and buried into the ground.

The Park Ranger came running over with instructions to be careful.

That’s about right and if it’s true that the roman candle reached a height of 120 KM before blowing then second and third stage fins wouldn’t mean anything anyway-—no air. This may have been an attempt by the new leader, who has spent time in the West, to show the benefits of good international PR to his much older mentors.

I see no way this level of media attention could have happened without Kim Jong-Un’s explicit approval, and probably with his encouragement.

It should be interesting to see how his older mentors view this massive loss of public face.

I would not want to be one of the hairsprayed North Korean PAOs right now who were responsible for media management. The only worse job would be the North Korean bus driver who took media buses into the Pyongyang equivalent of slums while photographers snapped cameras. I'm guessing the bus driver will be driving something very different for a long time if he's still alive, and the same for a lot of female PAOs and male rocket scientists.

Korean kimchi temper is a terrible thing to behold.

We agree... my hesitation in calling those the Pyongyang equivalent of “slums” is that they'd be great housing in most of the country were most North Koreans wish they could live.

Even the real Pyongyang that reporters and visitors don't get to see is far better than the rural countryside.

As for the non-confiscation of the camera cards: I read the accompanying article in the Korean press. The reporters seem as surprised as anyone else that their camera cards weren't confiscated, or at least the curtains drawn on the bus to end photography. My guess is that the North Korean PAO ladies were given directions about managing media, followed them to the letter as they were trained to do, and now are in huge trouble for doing precisely what they were told.

No makeup or hairspray for those ladies for a very long time, unless they can convince people the fault was much higher than them.

I've said it many times: If you want to make a car better, give it to the Asians. They'll make a thousand minuscule minor improvements because of their attention to details we never noticed, and the end result may be a better product. But don't expect Asia to have a Henry Ford who invented cars in the first place. The educational system simply does not promote the innovative thinking and risk-taking that's required to make major advances in technical fields, let alone academic fields.

Yes to body physiology, but malnourishment in childhood does play a role.

My Korean father-in-law and mother-in-law are well under five feet. My wife is a few inches shorter than my 5'4” height. My youngest niece who lives with us is already almost as tall as me, and will probably be taller when she finishes growing. It appears that Koreans are genetically capable of growing to moderate height; they just haven't had enough food to do so until the current generation. On the other hand, with my Italian genes, being 5'4” makes me about as tall as anyone in my extended family is likely to get.

Back to physiology and body types:

Ask yourself whether a Scandinavian and a Scotsman and a German and a Dutchman and a Frenchman and an Italian and a Greek look physically different, and you'll say, “obviously, yes” (at least on the extremes such as Scandinavian and Greek, less so in between those northern and southern European groups). It's the same way for different Asian ethnic groups. Just as virtually all Americans can tell the difference between most Italians and most Swedes, people familiar with Asians can usually tell the difference between Han Chinese, Korean and Japanese, and all of them look much different than Vietnamese or Laotian or Hmong or the various Indonesian groups. Of course, there's some shading there, especially with the huge size of China and some regionalization in Chinese ethnography over centuries or millenia.

I was under the impression that Korea and the Chinese right over the Yallow River were pretty much the same people. Koreans even used the Chinese alphabet/writing until one of their Kings created a better one.

I understand its considered one of the best written languages even if the spoken language isn’t.

I also love watching Korean dramas online, with subtitles. With good subtitles... the bad ones are like Babelfish.
