Tucked deep beneath the Kansas prairie, luxury condos are being built into the shaft of an abandoned missile silo to service anxious -- and wealthy -- people preparing for doomsday.
So far, four buyers have plopped down a total of about $7 million for havens to flee to when disaster happens or the end is nigh. And developer Larry Hall has options to retro-fit three more Cold War-era silos when this one fills up.
"They worry about events ranging from solar flares, to economic collapse, to pandemics to terrorism to food shortages," Hall told AFP on a tour of the site.
These "doomsday preppers", as they are called, want a safe place and he will be there with them because Hall, 55, bought one of the condos for himself. He says his fear is that sun flares could wipe out the power grid and cause chaos.

Abandoned missile silo.
Isn’t it just possible Russia or China mistakenly still targets that site?
Can you still buy any of these silo’s unimproved? Seems like a couple million would buy you the whole thing instead of just an apartment.
I can remember driving from Wichita to Tulsa, you would see several of them in the distance from the road.
There did not appear to be any defensive measures other than fences tho I am sure there was.
Some are flooded, so there’s that little obstacle.
Trapped underground in one of those things is close to the very last place I would want to be under any circumstances.
Take a look at a couple of the luxury conversions at the link I provided. It wouldn’t be all bad with the jacuzzi, etc.
As long as you are well supplied, you could shelter in place for an extended period of time.
FYI - sheltering in place is an important part of any readiness plan. This is how you would do it in relative safety and luxury.
You know what they’re going to call those folks who plunk down millions to hide in a hole after they crawl out when the food and water is exhausted ... “poor”.
The fact that I suffer from claustrophobia probably influences me quite a bit, but even if I didn’t I don’t think I would like to be in a place where I could be trapped.

If someone drops the big one on US (God dropping an asteroid the size of Ohio or the Iranians dropping 9 gigatons) I’d rather go right away.I think I’ll pass on these fortified underground bunkers and the freeze dried food packets with a 10 year shelf life.

Below ground with enemies above is a bad idea. Just ask various Japanese or Germans in bunkers.
Seal off the vents, or pour gasoline into them and drop a match. Of course the second alternative does tend to reduce the plunder potential.

Also sounds like Mr Hall is going to be hard-pressed to get an ROI on that project, any time soon. I wish him well. When TSHTF, “getting there” is also going to be problematic if an owner lives far away. My Family’s “SU” (Safe Unit) is only 100ft away.

I’m with you on this. If we get hit with the “big one”, I’d rather go right away.
The only missile complexes in that area were the Titan II sites and the closest one to I-35 was 532-1, and it was 3.7 miles from the highway.
There were no ABM or anti-air sites in that area either.

Idiots. Far better to buy an isolated place no one knows about or can easily access. If everyone in the county knows about the food there, don’t you think the mayor, police chief, national guard, etc aren’t going to “inspect” the place for code violations and confiscate their food as fines?
It’s one thing to fight off lone desperados, quite another to fight the local authorities.
You are the end product of over two billion years of evolution. Don’t tell me your survival instinct petered out in the last couple of easy living generations.

The idea is not to live underground indefinitely. The idea is to shelter in place with your family, if required.
Let’s say there is general social unrest due to a large-scale viral outbreak. (One possible scenario in which you might need to shelter in place.) You can put plastic up on the walls of your house and hope no infected people break in to steal your stuff - and possibly infect you - or you can have a nice underground bunker to retreat to until the situation stabilizes.
If I had the cash, I might take the one with the in-ground pool. ;-)

The silos may be empty, but have the Russians removed them from their target list? Probably not.
And even without the enemy above ground, you live in a constant cloud of RADON gas 24/7 down below.

I think I would rather have a large tanker or cargo ship somewhere out in the middle of the Pacific Ocean than be trapped underground in a missile silo.
Maybe Cheyenne Mountain will come on the market and i can buy that.
Actually it's highly probable they haven't done a thing but turn off a switch to take that area off the targeting lists.
Those folks have a higher risk of being turned into dusty like former crispy critters than just about anyone on Earth.

The trailer for “City of Ember” was better than the movie. It was OK, but mainly a movie for younger teens, IMO.
I’m sort of an old missileer, or more likely an old bus driver. I used to fly missileers around for a living, in our EC-135 ALCS aircraft. Interestingly or not, the entire complement of minuteman silos around Ellsworth AFB was imploded as part of the SALT treaty, and were inspected from the air and ground to insure compliance.
As usual when destroying what taxpayers have bought and paid for everyone loses, that goes for guns, bullets, planes, boats, jeeps, humvees, cannons, tanks, etc you name it. Keep it alive and keep it in country as long as you can afford the upkeep.
Exactly. Then there's the real possibility that when you did get there, the other will have barred the door and you'd be stuck out. Nope, they can have it and more power to the guy for getting 7 million each.
My wife made an interesting comment when we watched this - “Good luck getting there.”
The dude building it (and selling condos) whill have one heck of a bunker, all to himself, and his family.
