Santorum will win Louisiana primary, CBS News projects

Rick Santorum will win the Louisiana primary Saturday, CBS News projects. The victory is fresh evidence of the weakness of front-runner Mitt Romney, who is nonetheless increasingly likely to be the Republican who takes on President Obama in November.

According to exit polls, Santorum, a former Pennsylvania senator and social conservative, did well among evangelicals, Catholics and those who identify themselves as "very conservative."

With 16 of 4,267 precincts reporting, Santorum had about 40 percent of the vote, while second place Romney had 31 percent. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was a distant third with 21 percent and Texas Rep. Ron Paul had just 5 percent of the counted vote.

Santorum also did well among those who consider the economy the most important issue of the election. Among those voters, Santorum had 44 percent support, compared to 33 percent support for Romney, according to CBS News exit polls. The economy was considered the top factor among Republican voters in Louisiana Saturday.

I think it is time for Rick to offer the bottom of the ticket to Newt and I think Newt should be big enough man to accept.

I like your idea. It could be the way.

Way too many here forget that NOTHING counts but defeating Obama. All the rest is mental masturbation. Hate that nominee will not be Newt, but defeating the traitor is all that counts

I’m in Key Largo getting some R&R, sipping a rum, and was talking to the wife, who I don’t get to see much, as I am on the road most of the time.

I’d be happy to apologize except, I wasn’t talking about you in particular (re: Newt dropping out).

Bottom line for me is that I am sick and tired of the RNC, whose membership I have observed up close and personal, and the Washingtonians.

Obama is a direct result of the transformation over the last 100 years of America from a republic to a democracy, in which every one has the right to vote.

It’s all over but the shouting, the collapse is inevitable:

Our Founding Fathers and others speak out

Democracy: a government of the masses. Authority derived thru mass meeting or any other form of direct expression. Results in Mobacracy. Attitude toward property is communist - negating property rights. Attitude toward law is that the will of the majority shall regulate, whether it be based upon deliberation or governed by passion. prejudice and impulse without restraint or regard to consequences. Results in demogogism, license, agitation, discontent, anarchy.

Republic: Authority is derived thru the election by the people of public officials best fitted to represent them. Attitude toward law is the administration of justice in accord with fixed principles and established evidence, with a strict regard to consequences. A greater number of citizens and extent of territory may be brought within its compass. Avoids the dangerous extreme of either tyranny or mobacracy. Results in statesmanship, liberty, reason, justice, contentment and progress. Is the standard form of government throughout the world.

Benjamin Franklin: When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.

Alexander Hamilton, Federalist Papers: We are a Republican Government, Real liberty is never found in despotism or in the extremes of democracy...it has been observed that a pure democracy if it were practicable would be the most perfect government. Experience has proved that no position is more false than this. The ancient democracies in which the people themselves deliberated never possessed one good feature of government. Their very character was tyranny; their figure deformity.

John Adams: Democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.

Thomas Jefferson: A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where 51% of the people may take away the rights of the other 49%.

James Madison: Democracies have ever been spectacles of turbulence and contention; have ever been found incompatible with personal security or the rights of property; and have in general been as short in their lives as they have been violent in their death.

John Quincy Adams: The experience of all former ages had shown that of all human governments, democracy was the most unstable, fluctuating and short-lived.

Thomas Jefferson: The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not.

Benjamin Franklin (maybe): Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. Liberty is a well-armed lamb contesting the vote.

James Madison: Democracy was the right of the people to choose their own tyrant.

John Adams: That the desires of the majority of the people are often for injustice and inhumanity against the minority, is demonstrated by every page of the history of the world.

Thomas Jefferson: All, too, will bear in mind this sacred principle, that through the will of the majority is in all cases to prevail, that will, to be rightful, must be reasonable; that the minority possess their equal rights, which equal laws must protect, and to violate would be oppression.

John Witherspoon: Pure democracy cannot subsist long nor be carried far into the departments of state - it is very subject to caprice and the madness of popular rage.

James Madison: We may define a republic to be - a government which derives all its powers directly or indirectly from the great body of the people, and is administered by persons holding their offices during pleasure for a limited period, or during good behavior. It is essential to such a government that it be derived from the great body of the society, not from an inconsiderable proportion or a favored class of it: otherwise a handful of tyrannical nobles, exercising their oppressions by a delegation of their powers, might aspire to the rank of republicans and claim for their government the honorable title of republic.

John Marshall: Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.

Oscar Wilde: Democracy means simply the bludgeoning of the people by the people for the people.

Winston Churchill: The best argument against democracy is a five minute conversation with the average voter.

Sydney J Harris: Democracy is the only system that persists in asking the powers that be whether they are the powers that ought to be.

G. K., Chesterton: Democracy means government by the uneducated, while aristocracy means government by the badly educated.

George Bernard Shaw: Democracy substitutes election by the incompetent many for appointment by the corrupt few.

Dr Laurence J Peter: Democracy is a process by which the people are free to choose the man who will get the blame.

Alan Coren: Democracy consists of choosing your dictators after they’ve told you what you think it is you want to hear.

Karl Marx: Democracy is the road to socialism.

And there you have it. I have nearly 500 quotes from our Founding Fathers to clearly debunk the retarded liberals that say we are a Democracy.

No headlines of Rick’s LA win on Drudge... Just a small blurb. Surely, we should expect one after Drudge gave Romney got a huge headline after his IL win. </sarc>

Santorum is a lite weight. Newt may be many things, but he is definitely not that. He's just not pretty enough for the "cult of personality". Newt is the only one looking at the big picture and has talked it an walked it in the past and doing it again. Unfortunately, he isn't cute like Santorum or handsome like Romney and has a stupid smile which doesn't equate to Jersey Shore or American Idol fans (my wife made that facial distinction).

Obviously, Romney will be the nominee. He will get crucified by bambi in the debates - watch. Newt was the only one who had a chance to put bambi in his place, but now he's pretty much gone, we will have to deal with 4 more years of a socialist.

Thanks Republican Party for another Dole/McCain loser type nominee. You did well standing by your elites. I curse myself for maintaining my registration as a Republican. You are worthless. I'm going independent and will write in myself rather than pull the trigger for another RINO.

I'd rather see obambi get 4 more years and push us to the brink so America wakes up and is ready to fight for their rights, than see some RINO take us more slowly into the abyss. Screw the Republican party. I'm done and have told them so on their national site.

Really? Romney? Are you Republicans only about your team rather than our Constitutional principles? You Romneyites suck and just don't get it.

Here's a small clue for you: Constitutional Heritage. You partybots are pathetic. You are as bad as the liberals in corrupting our Constitution. The liberal/socialists have an excuse due to their ideology. What is the RINO excuse? What? Go along to get along?...and the Constitution be damned? The last leader in the Repub party I saw who adhered to Constitutional principles was Newt Gingrich. But no! You need handsome smarmy guy (Romney) who has flip-flopped on almost every issue and promoted/secured state governed health care. Parse it any way you and Romney want - he did it. Screw you all and deal me out of your special pubbie club.

Greetings Steelfish:

Insulting the Newt Gingrich wing of the conservative GOP movement adds no value to Rick Santorum’s status nor increases his delegate count.

While a Rick Santorum voter and campaign supporter, I remain quite fond of Newt Gingrich. While neither GOP candidate is perfect, both men boast impressive lifetime conservative voting records; they earned and deserve our respect.

Please, keep it real.

I believe anybody still supporting Newt, is doing so for a Romney rathaer than Santorum win. They just can’t stand the thought of a moral president.

Gingrich would have been an exciting candidate. I really enjoyed watching him in the debates. But if it wasn’t obvious before, he’s no longer capable of being a force in this race. If he can’t win Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana, he’s not going to win any of the other states.

If you were to make a list of all the candidates from previous primaries who only won one or two states, you’d be looking at a list of names no one remembers.

I don’t know if Romney can be stopped at this point. That makes me sick, but it’s the truth. Santorum is the only candidate who could plausibly stop him, and it’s a long shot.

You know, your post really makes me mad. I am a Conservative Evangelical Christian homeschooling mother of 3 boys and I am a STRONG Newt supporter! I support Newt and not Rick for MANY reasons. One is that I believe with all of my heart and soul that Newt Gingrich is the only one that could beat Obama. Sorry, that’s just the plain truth. And I am not willing to give up on this fight.

As for us not wanting a “moral” man, that smacks of hypocritical judgment. Sin is sin, God does not punish one sin more than another. Rick is a sinner just like the rest of us. We all fall in different ways and Christ is faithful to forgive ALL sins. “Do not judge, or you too will be judged. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judges, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you”. Mt 7:1-2

Support you candidate, fight for him with all your might. But your moralistic argument only diminishes your cause.

You may not know with your fresh sign on, but most of the people selling Milt here are Newt enthusiasts. Very odd.

Not really, Newt is far closer to Mitt than he is to conservatives.

And yet he stays, siphoning off votes from Santorum.

I voted for Newt in the TN primary. Had he not been in the race, my vote would not have gone to Santorum. Don't assume.

So there’s no difference between Hitler and Mother Teresa? God does make a difference between sins, at least as far as this life goes. I’m sure you would judge between having a normal decent family move in next door and a man that’s on the sex offenders list.

"And yet he stays, siphoning off votes from Santorum."

And yet he stays, pushing for a brokered convention where he will either pull off an upset and become the Republican's nominee or Sarah Palin's running mate. While Santorum is slightly more desirable than Romney he's no Newt or Sarah. I'm happy Newt is hanging in there. The big money from the moron church is trying to buy mitt a nomination but when someone has to tell you, repeatedly, just how conservative they are... Well.. There is NOTHING conservative about him. Santorum is a decent man but he too is unwilling to dismantle the federal bureaucracies and return our nation to a free nation ruled by the government outlined in the US Constitution. A government of the people, for the people and by the people. Aaaaaaah.... I rant. Sorry but one more point. Those of you that whine because Newt is taking votes from Santorum, just remember... According to mitten's camp both Santorum and Newt are siphoning off votes from mitt. The way I see it, at this stage of the process, I'd rather see them taking votes from each other than pulling a perot. And why is it you're not whining about Romney siphoning off votes from Santorum?

"He’s going to have a toughter road up there because Romney is currently in the lead."

Nooooo... He's going to have a tougher road up there because even the Republicans are liberals and romney does well amongst his own kind. Also... Romney's camp has already been caught stuffing ballot boxes (Iowa) and Wisconsin is known for their shenanigans when it comes to election fraud. Every member of the Latter Day Saints for a thousand miles, be they dead or alive, will cast a ballot for mitt in Wisconsin. Heck... I wouldn't be surprised to see some of their pets vote.

Nope... In my opinion the best person in the race at this time is Newt. Since Newt doesn't have a huge cult financing him he needs the convention to get his message out. Santorum is the fly in the ointment and I have no doubts he's being financed by anti-Newt camps on both sides of the isle.

Just my humble opinion but if Romney wins the nomination what we will see will be the battle between the money in the moron church and the money obomba has managed to pilfer from the American tax payers. Romney will lose.

"This was one of the states where it was actually HELPFUL to ahve two conservatives, except Gingrich just isn’t getting enough support anymore."

He isn't getting enough support for now. Santorum and Romney's camps keep siphoning off Newt's support and his votes.

I can't wait for the convention. It will be a level playing field by that time and Newt will mop the floor with Rick and mitt.

Seriously, that’s your argument? GRACE covers all SIN, but you must receive Christ as your Savior, the atonement for your sin, the giver of grace for your forgiveness. Newt has stated many times that he knows that he sinned, sought forgiveness and reconciliation with God and received it. And yet people like you want to continue to hold that sin against him. If you do not believe in forgiveness for Newt (how can you, a mere man or woman, judge a man’s true level of repentance?) then how can you believe in forgiveness for yourself? Hypocrisy about grace is what keeps so many people from coming to Christ.

If you want to disagree with Newt about his political positions and use that as an argument against him, fine.

And,do you honestly believe that Hitler trusted Christ as his Savior? Every one WILL be judged according to his or her own faith in Christ.
