At 81, sitting in his law office at Sidley Austin, in the Loop, above a stretch of street christened Honorary Newton N. Minow Way, Minow is talking about the young man his daughter Martha, a professor at Harvard Law School, recommended for a summer associate’s job two decades ago. At Minow’s firm Obama fell in love with a young lawyer, Michelle Robinson, who would become his wife.

New dean at Harvard Law

Harvard Law School named a new dean Thursday, and she has a Chicago connection. She’s the daughter of Newton Minow, the former chair of the Federal Communications Commission, who serves as senior counsel at Sidley Austin.

Martha Minow will become dean on July 1, replacing Elena Kagan, who became U.S. solicitor general earlier this year.

Sidley had been long time outside counsel to Commonwealth Edison. The senior Sidley partner who was Comm Ed’s key outside counsel, Howard Trienens, was a member of the board of trustees of Northwestern alongside Tom Ayers (and Sidley partner Newton Minow, too). It turns out, Bernardine Dohrn worked at Sidley also. She was hired there in the late 80s, because of the intervention of her father-in-law Tom Ayers, even though she was (and is) not a member of any state bar.

While at Sidley & Austin (1989-1991), Michelle would meet the terrorist, Bernadine Dohrn, who helped bomb something like 25 targets, including the Capitol and the Pentagon.

Dohrn was working at the firm as a result of the recommendation of the CEO of Chicago’s power company, Tom Ayers. His son, the unrepentant terrorist, Bill Ayers, ran the organization that put up the money to bring Obama to Chicago in the first place.

Ayers’ father, Thomas Ayers, was CEO of Commonwealth Edison as well as a trustee of Tribune Co. and chairman of the board of Northwestern University.

Dohrn was hired by . . .”the powerhouse firm of Sidley Austin.” The very same law firm where Barack Obama was hired as a summer associate after his first year at Harvard Law School. Where he met Michelle, his future wife. And just how did that coincidence happen?

Trienens headed Sidley Austin when the firm hired Dohrn in 1984. She had never practiced law and had been out of law school for 17 years.

When I asked Trienens if he had hired Dohrn, he replied: “Yes.”

Wasn’t that a bit of nepotism, considering his relationship to her father-in-law? A lot of lawyers would love a first job with such a prestigious firm.

“We often hire friends,” replied Trienens, 84.

Dohrn had not practiced law and been out of law school for 17 years while she was oh so busy doing, uh, other things,

Dohrn wasn’t licensed to practice law. Though she passed the bar exam, the ethics committee turned her down because of her rap sheet. That limited the type of work she could do at Sidley Austin, which she left after a few years.

“Dohrn didn’t get a license because she’s stubborn,” Trienens said. “She wouldn’t say she’s sorry.”

When the 1988 Reform Act was passed a group called Leadership for Quality Education (LQE) was formed, according to Shipps, by the elite business lobby that was in part behind the new reforms, to train the newly elected local school council members...

Interestingly, one LSC member was John Ayers, son of Tom and brother of Bill. In 1993, John was made head of the LQE - which, by then, according to Shipps, was caught in the middle of the battle emerging to re-centralize control of the schools in the hands of the mayor.

I can only speculate, but it is possible that Tom Ayers also introduced Obama to Sidley. That might have happened if Obama had met up with Bill and Tom and John Ayers prior to attending law school when Obama’s DCP group was one of the only black Chicago organizations supporting the reform act passed in 1988...

Thus, we have one possible answer to the question: Who “sent” Obama? It was the Ayers family, including Tom, John, Bill and Bernardine Dohrn...

The Board of Education is answering questions over its hotline, 1-800-244-ABCS. The City of Chicago’s Speakers Bureau will help find speakers for groups. For information, call 744-6671.

The office of the deputy mayor for education, Lourdes Monteagudo (744-4000), will refer residents to groups offering training sessions on reform legislation, budgeting, curriculum and other school-improvement issues.

The city also is distributing - through grocery stores - brochures on local school council elections.

You know that quote is a bit out of context. For starters it should say "black people" where it says [white people] and he is talking about what white Christian missionaries were teaching South Africans. I'm not saying that al-Mansour's history is correct but that quote doesn't mean what it appears to in your excerpt.

Assume he's telling the truth as he sees it. The Ayerses were probably doing something more than sending $30 dollars a month to Christian Children's Fund. But does that mean they were paying Harvard or Columbia tuition to a graduate of a Hawaiian prep school?

I'm thinking -- if you speak with an accent you can get away with being a "foreign student," but if you sound more or less like an American, odds are people won't take you for a foreigner. She must have been a very loopy old dame to introduce her Hawaiian-born protege to people as a foreign student, and not notice their reaction and adapt her thinking.

This is the suspicious part. If you hear "Indonesia" and "Kenya" over and over again for the last five years of course you're likely to think she said "Indonesia" or "Kenya," but for all we know she could well have said "Togo" or "Guinea-Bissau" or "Sierra Leone."

"Kenya or Indonesia" is a pretty strange combination, rather than "Kenya or Tanzania" or "Indonesia or Malaysia". It's hard to see how that could have been what he actually took away from the meeting at the time, rather than something he "remembered" because of all the hoopla about Obama years later.

You have some facts but give them an extra twist or tweak that turn them into non-facts. Obama was a drug user in school. Do we really know that he was a "heavy drug user"? Was he incapacitated? Always stoned in class? How'd he pay for it? Pushing to other students? You have to provide documentation for these things if you have it. Halve your estimate of his drug usage and throw in basketball and you may be closer to what was going on.

Obama's grades at Punahou were not great. But how do we know that he didn't take any challenging classes or what his GPA was if we don't have his transcripts? You're making a leap here and I don't think you're aware of it. To be sure, we don't know much about his days there and it's puzzling why the media never asks his classmates, but not knowing what happened is different from knowing what you claim we do.

Same thing with Occidental and Columbia. We don't know that he was a "part-time" student at Occidental. Obama didn't make an impression on most of his classmates at Columbia but it's not true that absolutely nobody remembers him.

We also don't know that Sidley and Austin asked him not to come back after one summer. Indeed, the established story is that they offered him a full-time position. That may not be true, but it does have more support than your version. You may be right, certainly more right than the official version, but where's your evidence?

It also sounds like you've seriously misjudged what was going on at universities and law schools at the time. They wanted Black applicants and they took some who could have had worse transcripts than Obama had. It did happen that minority applicants could go from community organizer to Harvard Law student, especially if they had an elite college somewhere in their resume.

The claim that Obama got into Occidental as a foreign student (presumably Indonesian) is a common birther myth. It has never been substantiated.
