Dozens of Iraqi teenagers stoned to death for ‘emo’ haircuts: activists

Iraqi activists sounded the bell over the killing of dozens of teenagers by religious police for having “emo” haircuts.

Activists told the Cairo-based al-Akhbar daily that at least 90 Iraqi teenagers with “emo” appearances have been stoned to death by the Moral Police in the country in the past month. The violent crackdown against “emo” Iraqi teenagers came after the Iraqi interior ministry declared them as “devil worshippers.”

“The ‘Emo phenomenon’ or devil worshiping is being probed by the Moral Police who have the approval to eliminate it as soon as possible since it’s detrimentally affecting the society and becoming a danger,” a statement by the Interior Ministry said.

“They wear strange, tight clothes that have pictures on them such as skulls and use stationery that are shaped as skulls. They also wear rings on their noses and tongues, and do other strange activities,” the statement added.

The statement said that Iraq’s Moral Police was granted approval by the Ministry of Education to enter Baghdad schools and pinpoint students with Western appearances.

The activists told the newspaper that a group of armed men dressed in civilian clothing led the teenagers to secluded areas a few days ago, stoned them to death, and then disposed their bodies in garbage dumpsters across the capital, Baghdad.

“First they throw concrete blocks at the boy’s arms, then at his legs, then the final blow is to his head, and if he is not dead by then, they start all over again,” one person who managed to escape told the daily. The exact death toll remains unclear, but Hana al-Bayaty of Brussels Tribunal, an NGO dealing with Iraqi issues, said the current figure ranges “between 90 and 100.”

Activists said that leaflets were distributed in Baghdad warning teenagers from donning the “emo” style, and in some regions, teenage homosexuals were killed by battering their heads also by concrete blocks.

...adopting a sort of outsider identity that gives them a little group cohesion and also protects them from peer pressure simply because they are considered wierd and nobody wants them around.

Wow... I never thought of that, but it makes perfect sense. I don't know why it didn't occur to me, I remember reading theories about how anorexia nervosa was also (possibly) a coping strategy for young women who didn't want to be sexualized. (Not a GOOD coping strategy, mind you, but... it did make sense.)

I don't know about Iraq, but in the inner city of Los Angeles, it's a pressure cooker. These kids watch each other like hawks, and they pounce on any deviation from their sub-culture. Even doing too well in school can make you a target.

I see a lot of crossover between the emo, rocker, and skateboarder crowds in the student body. They are usually pretty bright and friendly, but they just don't want to do the gangster, novella, quinceanera thing. It's a trip to see a little Hispanic kid with blue hair in his eyes and a Nirvana shirt on, toting his skateboard around. Actually, it's cute until they start piercing their faces.

As was said by another poster, I’d rather live next door to an atheist than to someone who belongs to the so-called Religion of Peace.

I’ve seen a few emos where I live They look ridiculous, but are largely harmless and don’t bother other people.

Just think how the clown crew at Kos is trying to filter this thru the logic of the multi-cult?

After reading most of the comments on the thread, I wouldn’t call “emo” typical of American culture, nor would I advocate copying “emo-ism”. It is destructive and perverse. I’m sorry the Iraqi kids got influenced by it, and even sorrier that the Iraqi fiends are fiends and butchered the kids mercilessly.

Pinging this out not just because it illustrates Iraqi butchery (WHY did we stay so long if they're still barbarian butchers???) but also describes what "emo-ism" is. I had no idea. Read all of Norm's comments, there are some other informative comments too. A bunch of mentally ill kids, self destructive in almost every way, and they like to get other kids into it. Not harmless, not funny, not cute. The results of a sick culture.

Yes, the face-piercing thing is taking it out of cute. However, one time a doctor told me to let them do their piercings. When they grow up and get sane, then they can take them out and it will barely leave a scar. Tattoos, on the other hand...thousands of dollars of painful laser surgery later, they’re still scarred for life.

I particularly hate tongue piercings, especially when you go to a restaurant and the waitron is barely intelligible because of the large silver ball clicking against her teeth every time she moves her tongue to speak.

No, “emo” isn’t typical of American culture. It’s more of a subculture. But my point is, they’re rejecting muslim/middle eastern culture. And who can blame them? Anything, even emo, is a step up from that.

Extremely troubled, high suicide rates. Broken families created broken children. Very heart breaking. Add to that a toxic culture...

Emo is not a step up at all. It’s a sick little perverted and dangerous niche. Bisexual, high drug use and suicides? That’s not a step up, sorry.

Maybe it says something positive about you. The “you might be a redneck if you use the term rattle can” kind of thing!

To: A_perfect_lady; Norm Lenhart

Do you disagree with Norm Lenhart’s description of emos and their proclivities? That’s what my POV is based on, his (and some other peoples’) comments. Either he is lying/misinformed, or not. If he is not, then I cannot see how anyone could disagree with me. Certainly Islam indoctrination is disgusting evil, but obviously these kids were in trouble emotionally and succumbing to the dakrness of whatever emo-ism they were into did not help them at all. So I guess you could say that the evil of Islam trumps the misery and degradation of emo-ism, but they’re on the same continuum. At least if a person gets into emo-ism, they can get out of it (if they haven’t contracted AIDS or committed suicide), whereas leaving Islam is often fatal.

The Religion of Peace at it again. From what I read, it is not just emo, but other western style of dress.

As a recent college grad, I know several emo people. Not once did they ever stone, threaten, beat up, etc. people who weren’t emo. Any emotional or drug issues can be worked on, the desire to stone people who don’t dress like you can’t. I’ll take any emo over a RoP member any day.
