It's Happening: 5 Coal-Fired Power Plants Shutting Down
Townhall.com ^ | March 1, 2012 | Erika Johnson

At the close of 2012, the EPA dictated a politically calculated--oops, I mean, for the sake of the public welfare, issued a--huge new stack of emissions regulations aiming to force coal-fired power plant operators to choose between installing pollution control equipment, switching to cleaner natural gas, or shutting down their plants. Which is good, because in 2008, President Obama did promise to bankrupt the coal industry... so, that's at least one promise he's kept, right?

Edison International (EIX) plans to shut down at least two aging coal-fired power plants in what could be a growing wave of retirements as low natural-gas and electricity prices and stricter pollution rules make many of these facilities unprofitable.

Edison will shut down its two Chicago coal-fired power plants -- one this year and one by 2014 -- rather than install pollution-control equipment to comply with state pollution limits, the company said. Edison said it also would likely shut down a third coal plant in Waukegan, Ill., and possibly others. ...

Companies are increasingly announcing plans to shut down aging coal plants as the cost of installing pollution-control equipment can exceed the value of the plant.

The Sierra Club estimates that these regulations are preventing a lot of premature deaths (I'm not sure how they think they know that), but Sen. Pat Toomey is not pleased:

But Sen. Pat Toomey, a Republican, said that as many as 315 people could lose their jobs.

"I am dismayed by the news that hundreds of Pennsylvanians will lose their jobs because of this impending wave of federal regulations. While I fully support sensible, existing power plant regulations to protect our air, the cumulative effect of these new rules, which are some of the costliest in the EPA's history, is overwhelming."

And while the Obama administration can certainly hope and dream that the ensuing energy vacuum will be filled by the bounteous sources of wind, solar, and other greenie endeavors, you can bet that more 'necessarily skyrocketing' electricity prices are what's for dinner.

My Ultra Conservative Granny was shocked that I was voting against Al Gore back in the day. Nothing I showed her was anything but evil Republican lies. When I pull that lever it’s 100% sure we know in my family, why? Thinking voters today are just plain old “rare”.

I know of guys getting laid off due to the power plant closures. Someone in charge isn’t thinking of the consequences of closing those plants/getting rid of coal. It’s not going to help “someone’s” reelection.

So now Obama is giving them the Change they voted for.

They will soon Hope that others are smart enough to boot him out in 2012.

How long does Congress/Military wait; while America is being destroyed; before something is done about the President ‘who would be King’ - if he did not already imagine that he was.

After they strangle the coal plants they'll go after
natural gas to finish the kill.

There is no fine line, energy IS our economy.

I'd like to know that as well.

PA was warned that Obama would do this, they voted for him anyway. How do you protect voters from destroying themselves by their very own votes??

THEY WERE TOLD loud and clear. I don't feel sorry for them, none at all. You can't fix STUPID. New Orleans proved that.

We can tell them again this year, they will still vote for ZERO, wanna bet?

NEWT needs to get up there quick and smooth their feathers, if thats possible, tell them how he will fix the problem. Timing is very important NEWT, get going or send someone.

Obama has set his sight higher than merely being a king. Obama is striving to be emperor of plantet Earth with a longer view of being emperor of our universe.

Emperor works - or even higher.

This man has a 'God-complex' like no other President. Still remember, his celebratory speech given the night of Election - in Chicago. The visual of Obama on stage; with large screen visual behind him. No one else shared that stage; or the lights or the drama. It was sickeningly spooky; and certainly a moment that screamed it's own warning.. .

And then; there was California and the fake Greek columns. . the American flags - and trash- thrown to ground afterward.

Yes; he told America; warned America; and still does; when he poses that he is not 'finished' with America; his job not done. The Obama logo is not America's flag yet.

They say 'cooked frog' tastes like chicken.

Proof is Obama's proposed FY 2013 Budget where the EPA gets more funding to investigate shale gas.

If Obama gets re-elected, they will enact rules to make the costs of natural gas production higher than the industry will tolerate.
