Romney and Paul successfully call Santorum’s conservatism into question
Washington Post ^ | February 22, 2011 | Aaron Blake

Rick Santorum’s front-runner status in the GOP presidential race is predicated on the idea that he is the consistent conservative alternative in the field.

And that image had some serious holes poked in it at Wednesday’s debate in Arizona.

Mitt Romney and Ron Paul tag-teamed the former Pennsylvania senator much of the night, calling into question his conservatism on issues ranging from earmarks and fiscal policy to his endorsements and even what is often considered Santorum’s most solidly conservative credential — social issues.

Is there anyone out there who still doesn't realize that Ron Paul is working to get Romney nominated and Obama reelected? In the debate Paul was Romney's hand puppet. Paul was Romney's attack dog. Whenever Romney ordered Paul immediately attacked.

This article shows how Paul is working to get Romney the nomination.

They attempted to call into question these issues...too bad Santorum successfully battered their attempts to distort the truth. Santorum dismantled Ron and Romney tonight.

Romney/Rand Paul 2012 is probably the plan.

This is a campaign ad.

The Washington Compost just donated $20,000 to the Romney 2012 presidential campaign.

Maybe so but Santorum didn't look so good, especially the second hour.

"Taking one for the team" by voting for Planned Parenthood didn't go down so well. Made Bush look like an a--hole though. And his story about Specter still doesn't hold water. He just sold out on that one.

I wonder how long before the debate the article was written.

Rand Paul is no different than his dad, except that he meters his words much better.

Plus his son said he would accept Romney’s VP position. They are DEFINITELY working together.

I’m afraid your analysis will turn out to be somewhat of a fairy tale after you read the headlines tomorrow.

It was brutal, and I don’t mean in favor of Tricky Ricky either.

I don’t think so. He did pretty well. He must win Michigan and Arizona no matter what you believe. Because Newt has decided to by pass Michigan so unless you want Romney to win, you should be nicer to Santorum and support his win in Michigan at least. If you want Romney, then keep doing what you are doing.

Santorum won, but not for the reason many would think. Newt and Mittens needed for him to melt down, blow up, or forget a cabinet department for them to make any headway. While he might not have won it technically, he did enough to keep the momentum from shifting.

Odd, as there was already a mini vote posted in another thread that Had Newt winning by a large margin followed by Santorum. Odd what happens when you don’t listens to liberals and the media/rino establishment....

Now that is funny! Romney and Paul calling someone else out on “conservatism”?

Romney the bold-faced, pro-choice, healthcare mandate RINO that is far closer to Obama than even Juan McCain... yeah - real Conservative creds.

Or Ron Paul who is an isolationist, 9-11 Truther, friend of racist hate groups, who’s strongest “selling” point is that he is tops in military donations. Guess who is his nearest “competitor” in that regard... Obama. I believe Paul’s total is just North of $90K. Obama’s total is a bit more than $70K...

The reality - we have no “Conservatives” left on the Republican ballot. What we have are decreasing levels of pseudo-conservatism. Santorum is the most consistent - but he is very far from a perfect candidate (and pretty far from even a “desirable” candidate). But his old statement being used against him about Satan having his eyes set on this country was dead-on accurate.

Romney is so far Left of even moderate, in my view that I just cannot bring myself to vote for him. He is worse than McCain.

And Ron Paul - If he could somehow be in a position to do something about the monetary system/the Fed, then he would be in a good position. As President, I believe he is every bit as dangerous as Obama.

That is true. I just hope he wins Michigan and Arizona. If he doesn’t Romney does for sure and that is frightening.

Right your boy gets humiliated by his own lack of ability and it naturally becomes the fault of an evil conspiracy between Paul and Romney.

Santos had every opportunity to turn it all back on them, but when the pressure is on, he comes apart like a two dollar wallet. And he definitely illustrated why he can't win or handle the Presidency. He is just not Presidential and tonight, he removed all doubt.

I think you’re right. The left’s prayer was that Rick would make some huge gaffe or give them some new talking point. I don’t think anything really new came out tonight.

I just wish Rick would have gone farther with the gov’t is a team sport answer. Should have asked Newt, Romney, and Paul if they never voted for anything in a package that they’d rather not dealt with.

lol. You complete and utter hatred for Santorum is just crazy. What the heck did he do to you? Sheesh. You come on every Santorum thread and just complain about Santorum. Why not just stay on Newt threads and try to get him back to double digits again. You are doing nothing here but wasting your time.

“Santorum had his ass handed to him on a TV tray”

You don't know what you are talking about. Did you even see the debate? Paul came off as Romney's brainless hand puppet. He was Romney's stooge, Romney's attack dog.

I kept expecting Romney to give Paul a doggy treat and say “good doggy” after Paul's repeated attacks on Santorum.

Santorum was intelligent and dignified. Santorum came off as a gentlemen against a couple of mean spirited children acting out.
