Afghans vent fury over Koran burning, U.S. apologizes

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta issued an apology for "inappropriate treatment" of Islam's holy book at the base to try and contain fury over the incident - a public relations disaster for Washington as it tries to pacify the country ahead of the withdrawal of foreign troops in 2014.

Protesters started to gather after Afghan laborers found charred remains of copies of the Koran as they collected rubbish from Bagram airbase, the provincial governor's office said in a statement.

As many as 2,000 Afghans massed outside several gates to the base, the main center for NATO-led forces just north of the capital Kabul, chanting anti-foreigner slogans and throwing stones, said Reuters reporters at the scene.

Both Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the Taliban in Afghanistan condemned the incident, both of them saying the values of Islam had been "degraded."

Winning the hearts and minds of Afghans is critical to U.S. efforts to defeating the Taliban, but critics say Western forces often fail to grasp Afghanistan's religious and cultural sensitivities.

A senior U.S. official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said staff at Bagram had decided to remove "extremist literature" and other materials left in a library in the base's detention block.

"They (the materials) were taken out of the library for good reason but they were being disposed of in a bad way," the official said.

"There was a breakdown in judgment in this matter but there was no breakdown in our respect for Islam," the official added.

Both Afghan President Hamid Karzai and the Taliban in Afghanistan condemned the incident, both of them saying the values of Islam had been "degraded."

The values of Islam are not "degraded" by this trumped up little incident. They were not affected at all. It is just an excuse to stir up sh*t against the infidels.

The values of Islam are "degenerate" (and have been since Mohammad founded this murderous gutter religion) and these wackos have continued it all on by themselves. Nothing can redeem it or it's lost adherents except turning to Jesus - and playing along with their crazy little Muslim mind and power games is not going to advance that.

We need to get out of Afghanistan and quit pretending there is anything left to be "won" there. This is a savage, backward, tribal culture and trying to turn it into an American style republic is a fool's errand.

If we need to go back in again, I'm sure we can find more temporary allies who want to get rid of the Taliban and their tyranny once again, for tribal and personal reasons. But we sure aren't going to make them like or appreciate us, especially when so much we do stems from our own simpering Politically Correct weakness.

I heard this pathetic apology yesterday. Oh boo-frickin-hoo some Islamic garbage got destroyed. Lets talk about the thousands of christians being persecuted and martyred daily by this so called religion of peace. If our country only had stones anymore and we would tell these people to go pound salt where the sun doesn’t shine. I know us Christians are supposed to turn the other cheek and pray for our enemies but my goodness I wish sometimes we could use the same tactics they use on us against them. The world would go in an uproar if someone burned a mosque to the ground. So so sad!!

Cowardice is appeasing the animal who is trying to kill you in the hopes he will kill someone else first.

So who stirred up the Afghani muzzies?

From the WSJ:

"Most Afghans learned about the Quran burning in Florida only when Mr. Karzai on March 24 (4 days after!) condemned the act as "a crime against the religion and the entire Muslim nation," called on the U.S. and the U.N. to bring the perpetrators to justice and demanded "a satisfactory response to the resentment and anger of over 1.5 billion Muslims around the world."

General Petraeus has certainly won Karzai's heart and mind. /s

You would think that having our female troops wear muslim hijabs instead of K-pots would have been enough to placate them.

“That’s what I thought. This sounds like a set up to me.”

Another Reichstag fire, I agree.

Of course, I worthless, Muslim ASSLICKING government doesn’t have the balls to confront them on this. It “must” have been “our” people who did it.

And Karzai is another knuckledragging, ungrateful sonofabitch.
