Report: Obama Administration Is Giving Away 7 Strategic Islands to Russia

May 1881 US explorers approached Jeannette Island and Henrietta Island and claimed them for the United States. According to some US individuals, including the group State Department Watch, eight Arctic islands currently controlled by Russia, including Wrangel Island, are claimed by the United States. However, according to the United States Department of State no such claim exists. The USSR/USA Maritime Boundary Treaty, which has yet to be approved by the Russian Duma, does not address the status of these islands nor the maritime boundaries associated with them.

The Obama Administration is reportedly giving away Wrangell, Bennett, Jeannette and Henrietta islands in Alaska to Russia. The federal government drew the line to put these seven Alaskan islands on the Russian side Former senatorial candidate Joe Miller broke this story at World Net Daily:

Giving away what you don’t really own is a hallmark of this administration.

He’d probably give away the whole state, if he thought he could get away with it. Is it to appease the Russians or to spite Sarah Palin?

I yield to no one in my contempt for Barack Obama and all his works, but give the Devil his due. Judging by the map included with the article, the islands in question are clearly in what ought to be Russian territory. It would be nice if we could get something in return for the concession, but overall this treaty is nothing more than a routine bit of map tidying.

The Obama Administration is reportedly giving away Wrangell, Bennett, Jeannette and Henrietta islands in Alaska to Russia.

Hold your horses folks.

1. Wrangell Island has never been claimed by the United States, although it was once claimed by Canada. It has been continuously occupied by Russia since 1924.

2. Bennett Island, Jeannette Island and Henrietta Island are part of the DeLong archipelago -- discovered by American explorers, yes, but off the Northern coast of Siberia and nowhere remotely near the United States. They have never been claimed by America, never been settled by Americans and have been actively claimed by Russia for the last century.

This story is complete Wing Nut Daily garbage.

1) We don't own the islands, so it's hard to give them away. Wrangel Island has a Russian village on it and has been continuously controlled by the Russians/Soviets for over a hundred years.

2) None of these islands were included in the purchase of Alaska from Russia.

3) The islands aren't "in Alaska" they are all very far on the Russian side of the Bering Strait, and all but 1 are in fact North of Siberia.

They don’t exactly look strategic to me unless strategic means cold.

I could be a rich man if I had a penny everytime one is pulling this thread.

These islands are de-facto Russian for decades. Residents had Soviet passports and has Russian passports now. One of the islands had a Soviet airbase and early warning radar until it’s closure in late 90’s. Just look at the map and see it belongs to Siberia not Alaska.

I wish Canada had claimed Hawaii!

We have quite enough cold islands. Seriously!

I’d cheerfully settle for just Maui.

Take a look at this map:

I despise the Obama administration, but this map makes it clear that these are Russian islands.

"This story is complete Wing Nut Daily garbage."

Why anyone posts stuff here from that "sensationalist" nut-case site that MOSTLY caters to the nut-cases (while laughing all the way to the bank), I'll never know.

Not only that—he’s letting Russia have Novaya Zemlya and the Kola Peninsula! Not to mention Kamchatka.

This reminds me of a Spanish instructor I had once who was obsessed with the idea that the Channel Islands still belonged to Mexico.

You are correct.

Better still, I would have said: “Take those islands but only if you also take Califonia with you...or there is no deal.”

Wrangel Island was the last outpost of the Wooly Mammoths. A small pygmy population died out in about 3500 BC.
