It’s amazing and disheartening that over 3800 are still missing. Gut-wrenching videos.

Sadly, the people along the coast had gone a long time without a big tsunami, and forgot about the terrible power behind those waves. We were watching a show about the earthquake a few months ago, and a Japanese man mentioned a stone marker up on a rise above the ruins of one of the towns. He said that the marker was placed as a warning, after the last big tsunami had reached that level, for people NOT to build below that marker. This tsunami reached that marker, as well, and if the people had heeded the warning, many wouldn't have died.

Thanks for posting this. A week or so ago this was sent to me via email and I in turn passed it on to about 35 others. The comments I got back were that the Japanese who either knew about the aid they received or were receivers themselves are very appreciative. Another part that impressed those making the comments was that this was done entirely on their own....not by some Gov’t entity...just plain folks.

I appreciate the sentiment but...I could only make it half way through...the score really made it unwatchable for me.

There was a small village right along the coast (I can't remember the name) whose mayor back in the early 1980's spent a huge amount of money constructing a massive floodwall to protect the village from a tsunami. He'd lived through two previous waves and wanted to make sure everyone was safe. For years people ridiculed this project, even after his death.

When the tsunami struck last year, the barriers were quickly lowered into place and blocked the wave. The village's only fatality was a fishing boat captain who'd gone to check on his boat.

The village quickly became a staging area for the rescue efforts in that region. About two weeks after the quake they showed pictures of the mayor's grave and it was completely covered with flowers from those he'd saved with his actions thirty years ago.

Oh please. We’re not allowed to make valid observations about posts, anymore? We have to tow the line of the thread or shut up?

I’m not downing the video, I just find things like this are much more meaningful to me without hyperdramatic sound design. It’s much more interesting to hear the events and peoples reactions to them than to be manipulated with someones poorly executed score.

A “score” is something that belongs to “The King and I”.

Yes you were downing the video.

Many of these missing, or at least parts of them, will soon begin washing up on beaches from British Columbia to South America thanks to ocean currents as the huge 'islands' of tsunami debris out in the ocean are pushed ashore by currents.
