Air Force to cut 10,000 airmen, shift aircraft

The Air Force on Friday detailed plans to cut the service by nearly 10,000 active, National Guard and Reserve airmen next year, as part of a broad move to downsize and shift capabilities around the country to be better prepared for wars of the future.

More than half of the personnel cuts, and much of the aircraft and other equipment moves, will be borne by the Air Guard, triggering criticism from the National Guard Association.

The Air Force said the service cannot absorb any further cuts in active duty forces because that would limit their ability to respond to multiple crises.

Overall, about 3,900 active duty, 5,100 Air Guard and 900 Air Force reserves would be cut in the next year.

Here we go again. Obama channels the ghost of Jimmy Carter.

We'll see what 50 governors and 100 senators have to say about gutting the Air Guard . . . again.

Is this a result of the so called “Super Committee” not being able to come up with budget cuts?

(Although O is already calling for another debt ceiling increase.)

What crisis? Marshall Law perhaps?

Howdy Doody is stepping up his campaign of destruction before the electuins. I feel it is going to get very ugly in the coming months.

Let’s see now, my last day on the job was last Friday, and my nephew is a young Air Force jet mechanic.
I’m starting to think Commandante Zero is making all this `hope and change’ personal ...

When I came to work at my present employer, the hallways were full of "SDI" work. Clinton was elected a year later. The halls became a "ghost town". Likewise, the parking lot went from overflowing to mostly empty.

Yeah, got a friend in the AF Reserves. She’s probably screwed even though she is extremely good at what she does.

Any cuts to Welfare?

Nah, didn’t think so. How about entitlements to illegals?

Nope, didn’t think so either.

After reading the article, I'm not too concerned it's mostly about cutting back on the National Guard and repositioning assets. Even with the latest defense cuts over some 10 years, the budget will still allow the 2nd biggest expenditures to our defense, after HHS expenditures. Of course, HHS monies are outrageous. Still, I'm not really worried.

A huge part of our GDP goes into defense research, production, payroll, etc., and always will. Yes, even with the commies in the Legislature and the Executive branch, there are those who will not allow us to become defenseless.

Here's a happy thought: Think Trident submarines. No one knows where they are, and no one knows what their target package is. Yeah, I know, the Muslims don't subscribe to MAD because they just don't give a shit about themselves nor their children. But that will be resolved with other means - watch Israel in the coming year.

I knew a guy named Marshall Law. He died several years ago. He lived in the town I inhabit.

If you are talking about something other than an individual, perhaps you mean to reference something like martial law.

They're not doing any such thing.

They're slashing their our force structure to cut the DoD budget -- to "save money" so they can throw it away on tax-eaters, for votes.

It's just as Hackett et al. described in The Third World War, a Carter-era warning about what British and U.S. defense cuts were doing to the defensibility of Europe, and especially to deterrence.

As Hackett pointed out, the British played this "reorganization" game for 20 years and more, until the British Army of the Rhine (BAOR) became almost a paper force without a real core. In the authors' war-gamed exposition, the Red Army sliced through the BAOR as if it were hot butter. It took an arc-light raid finally to stop the Red Army short of the Rhine.

Unknown to Hackett et al, at the time, was nothing would stop the Russians. The Russian army, once passed through the Fulda Gap, would continue its advance until it reached the English Channel 72 hours later.

(Arc light raids using nuclear weapons would not have worked, assuming the B52s survived long enough to get there in the first place.)

At some point in the Russian advance, tactical nuclear weapons would have been used by both sides. That use would have slowed the advance somewhat but not halted it.

At the time, the combined Russian armies would have been in around 4-500,000 motorized troops and 30,000 tanks.

The Russsian coms used encrypted one-day throwaway pads for inter-unit locations, the US used plain descriptions passed in the clear ... AFCVE DEFGT (4- channel PPM encrypted) as opposed to “take a right off the HWY and we are under the big tree in the field”.

Our position, 4 klicks from the German border and opposite the Fulda Gap, would have been overrun in the first hours, with the first rest stop 30 klicks behind us. But then, it would not have mattered to us, since we were a tactical nuclear target for the Russians and a strategic nuclear target for the US ...

An interesting side note: the Russians (as told to me by a KGB guy) used the word ‘Mir’ differently than we did. To us it meant both World or Peace depending on usage. He told me they used it with a clenched fist meaning Conquer the World. Same as the ragheads say ‘Daresalem’ meaning Peace of the World to us, but meaning Peace of the World Under Islam to them.
