Why we should regulate sugar like alcohol
CNN ^ | February 1, 2012 | Laura Schmidt

I am a medical sociologist, which means I study the health of whole societies. I've spent more than 20 years studying the best possible ways to address alcohol problems in societies -- what works and what doesn't to protect people from harm.

I work as a professor in the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and at the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute. This allows me to connect with other scientists who come from very different backgrounds but who want to work together on big problems -- think of a Manhattan Project, only one focused on protecting health through the collaboration of scientists who study everything from tiny cells to entire societies.

Translation: "I am an expert who knows more than you. I know more than all the generations who came before. I know so much that my anointed vision should determine what everyone can or cannot eat. You are unqualified to decide for yourself. When you think about how much our Cult of Experts knows, and how we solve BIG problems like being fat, think of Penn State, Global Warming, and their monumental manipulation of data for grant money."

medical sociologist

Sounds like a self-provided title.

I am tired of these food Nazis. It seems like everything that tastes good is bad for you. I’d rather die with a Big Mac on my breath than eating tofu knee deep in feces in an occupier tent!

The comments that follow this are spooky. People just want to line up and be treated like sheep.

Well, I hoarded 12 years of 100 watt bulbs and I can just as easily hoard 12 years of sugar.

Right, I’m a “political proctologist”...and business is booming! What other pseudo-professions can we invent?

Great, soon we’ll have to go to a Sweeteasy for our sugar fix.

Some conservatives want to subsidize sugar, and some liberals want to regulate it. Let’s get them together and create some sort of a government program. What could possibly go wrong?

You're an idiot.
Either promote outlawing the substance or get a real job.

Ya know....people are living longer....but most of them are incapacitated in some way and miserable.

My friends father just died at age 93. 15 years of alzheimers and diabetes and all the time in a hospital/nursing home.

You really think regulating sugar would have helped??

Just go away!!! Stop being stupid.

I am pro-choice on sugar. It should be safe and legal. No more back-alley sugar buys.

Just another college professor with no marketable skills, who validates herself by denying other people the right to make choices of which she disapproves.

I heard this about regulating sugar on the radio, yesterday. All I could think of was, yeah, legalize drugs and regulate sugar.

• With apologies to Robert Michum.

Now let me tell a story, I’ll tell it from the top
About a mountain boy that ran illegal soda pop
Coca Cola made the tonic and Junior drove the load
And when his engine roared they called the highway Thunder Road

Sometimes into Worcester Sometimes Old Beantown
The revenuers chased him but they couldn’t run him down
Just when they thought they had him their Prius would explode
And he’d cruise by while they were standing still on Thunder Road

And there was thunder thunder on that Thunder Road
Thunder was his engine Jolt Cola was his load
There was Pepsi Pepsi to quench the devil’s thirst
The people swore they had rights but the Gub’ment took them first
[ guitar ]

Blazin’ right through Sturbridge on down the ol’ Mass Pike
It was just outside of Auburn where they made that fatal strike
They taxed him to death at ninety that’s all there is to tell
The devil sent the Marxists and they took us straight to hell

I expect enthusiastic police support for monitoring and confiscating objectionable materials.

Laura Schmidt certainly thinks a lot of herself.

I can't understand why.

Right. It’s the same people who think nothing of poking holes in their body and getting tattoos or piercings. But don’t wave that scary cookie at them!

I went on the Prism diet in 1997 and lost 55 lbs in a few months. I learned that diet is more harmful to americans than cigarettes. That said, I am a conservative:

A conservative thinks too much sugar in his diet is bad, so he avoids sugar.

A liberal thinks too much sugar in his diet is bad, so he tries to pass a law making it illegal to eat too much sugar.

I abhor the liberal mindset.
