Why we should regulate sugar like alcohol
CNN ^ | February 1, 2012 | Laura Schmidt

I am a medical sociologist, which means I study the health of whole societies. I've spent more than 20 years studying the best possible ways to address alcohol problems in societies -- what works and what doesn't to protect people from harm.

I work as a professor in the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine and at the UCSF Clinical and Translational Science Institute. This allows me to connect with other scientists who come from very different backgrounds but who want to work together on big problems -- think of a Manhattan Project, only one focused on protecting health through the collaboration of scientists who study everything from tiny cells to entire societies.

As someone who will turn 80 on my next birthday I’ll give you a portion of my routine today.

I had a large black coffee and 2 cigarettes earlier today, after a good breakfast.

Then a decent lunch and another smoke.

I’ll have a light dinner and another smoke.

During the evening I will have a couple of smokes followed by a glass of whole milk and some Oreos before bed.

I walked my granddog 2 miles today,as I do every weekday. I stay active and involved in spite of my “bad” habits and I’ve never had a weight problem.

Life is good.

Obviously your life is VERY good indeed!!!!!!! good to hear from you!

We’re on our way out to dinner at a really great mexican place. Unfortunately it is in Maryland and so we will order a cocktail before dinner, but there won’t be any after dinner. Can’t smoke in Maryland and our favorite Virginia hangouts are currently closed for the season. March 1st can’t get here fast enough for me.

Are there actually places in VA where you can still smoke?

And you, Dr. Schmidt, are a danger to society everywhere. A self-appointed expert, full of yourself...and 100% full of sh!#.
