It’s stories like this that make me question the judgment of my fellow evangelicals. When I was a Santorum supporter, I remember having a conversation with a FReeper whose name escapes me in which he argued that social conservatives like me supported Santorum because we put family values above the economy. I pointed out that that wasn’t the case the me; at the time, I genuinely thought he had a better shot overall.
Having seen Santorum work his magic over the past couple of weeks, I can say with confidence that social conservatism is all he offers. He’s unlikable, he’s not particularly interesting, and he’s put his personal ambition above what’s best for the country (defeating Romney). His waffling on SOPA makes him inherently unelectable.
I can only shake my head in disappointment. These “evangelical leaders” are incredibly foolish.
thanks
There are 2 kinds of social conservatives. One group is opposed to abortion and gay marriage and special gay rights and wants to allow prayer in school. Newt is that kind of social conservative.
The other group also wants to censor the internet, throw out books such as Harry Potter from school libraries because they could lead to witchcraft, force kids to pray in a specific way in public school even if they aren’t religious or practice another religion, etc. I’m afraid Santorum and Michele Bachmann represents that kind of social conservative.
