Newt’s bringing together a coalition of conservative visions. He’s got Rick Perry on board who brings the theme of states rights. I’ve heard Newt talking a lot about sound money lately, which is Ron Paul’s theme. I believe there will be more additions.

In Newt’s SC victory speech, he said he isn’t running a Republican campaign—but an American campaign. This’ll be something momentous in scope like we’ve never seen before.

Again who is Mitt different from Obama?

Lemming.

My dog could beat Obama if she was a conservative.

On Meet the Press today Newt came down hard on the establishment in a counterattack when DG brought up the establishment’s criticism of him. He basically said what the establishment has done to this country in the last 10 years is indefensible and he is all too happy to be running against them. It was a powerful statement because I know it will resonate with most people. Newt’s almost varnishing himself with a teflon coating here. The more the establishment attacks him, the more he can claim he is the anti-establishment choice, which will only make him more popular with primary voters, at least all the ones who aren’t fat and happy Wall Street investment bankers and hedge fund traders.

If Romney wins the nomination I will wish your dog is running for POTUS.

BTW, is your dog smarter than you? Just wondering.

You refuse to answer my question. How is Romney different than Obama?

“Not necessarily. Mitt willwin Michigan, Nevada, Colorado, and Utah. By the time Super Tuesday gets here, yhe media will be back to inevitability. This thing is going long past Florida.”

Romney will do best in blue states, Gingrich in red. This will underscore the fault lines of American culture. Think Russia and Ukraine, Austria and Hungary.

Romney will also be meaner than cat’s piss when he is frustrated, and this will upset his view of the cosmos.

He is not a whole or well person. How could he be? There is no there there. He will do all he can to thwart any challenger, even after he has been defeated in the primary.

“Romney needs to be stopped because he is Mass liberal, but I think he would hold the south against Obama in a general.”

I rather doubt it. He is the very antithesis of the South. Smug, arrogant, cold, stiff, unprincipled, condescending, gun controlling, statist, abotionist, teetotaller elitist whose whole family avoids military service. A fair number of southerners will go for some third party or independent as a protest vote, and a greater number will not bother to turn out to vote for this alien over the other alien.

If Romney is the cram down candidate for the GOP in 2012, look instead for the gradual unraveling of Nixon’s entire southern strategy, just as the Bush family eventually unraveled the Reagan coalition.

“Theoretically all the evangelicals who just won’t vote for Newt are more likely to go for Santorum than Romney. If he leaves, then I thought Romney might benefit.”

Depends on how proactively Gingrich addresses his sexual and marital history. Against Romney is the whole Mormon issue. If Romney had a solid conservative track record, evangelicals would probably support him despite the Mormon baggage, but he does not. There is -nothing- there to attract evangelicals except perhaps an absence of petty vice.

As for Gingrich, yes, he has a record of sins (as do we ALL), BUT he has addressed them in a way that connects with evangelicals. He has acknowledged wrong, expressed his repentance and reached for redemption. That is the tale of the prodigal son, of David, or of Paul. THAT is more captivating for most evangelicals than a smug “X don’t smoke nor drink nor chew, and X don’t kiss no girls who do” line of approach.

Evangelicals should NOT be confused with Puritans or the Inquisition. Evangelicals understand repentance and forgiveness and restoration.

Another one of Romney’s feverishly pitched anti-Newt talking points were that “we’re electing a president, not a talk radio host.” Sheesh, doesn’t he have some actual conservatives he can buy off to run this messaging by first? I know what I’ve been waiting for for years is a Republican candidate who actually exhibits the passion on the issues and the ability to communicate that the average conservative radio host does. Make that Exhibit #467 to make the case that Romney is out-of-touch with the voters and not a conservative.

It’s funny that Newt is being vindicated on some of the earlier statements that he walked back. He said back in December that it was hard to imagine he wouldn’t be the nominee. And a couple weeks ago he called Romney a liar. Now we’re seeing the evidence to prove these assertions firsthand.

Now that Newt’s the frontunner, the “rise above the fray” strategy that Romney employed in Iowa might work. Newt can let his SuperPAC do the dirty work while he avoids direct attacks on Romney and pitches his message for the general election against Obama. These new Romney attacks seem so facile that he might actually be able to dismiss them as easily as he did John King’s question.

I also noted that Meet the Press today, while being highly unfavorable to Newt, made note that when Romney went into attack dog mode in 2008, he did a bad job of it. Considering how unlikable Romney is when he’s being nice, I can’t imagine how quickly the “mean” Romney will wear out his welcome.

Agreed. Much of the rise of talk radio conservatism has been due to the utter failure of the political class to carry the message. Limbaugh himself was cranky a few years back about ‘carrying the water’ for unnamed GOP suits.

Gingrich will not need anyone to articulate conservatism for him. However, I hope to almighty God that Gingrich is done with the lame triangulation foolishness with the left.

If you look at the internals of the last PPP poll from SC, Gingrich leads with the evangelical demographic by near 2 to 1 over Romney and Santorum: 41% vs. 21%.

Further confirmation, CNN exit polls from SC also mirrored this trend: Gingrich 44%, Romney 22%, Santorum 21%.

So, Santorum's presence isn't really necessary if all he's there for is to siphon evangelical votes from Romney. Newt's already got that niche effectively covered, and would benefit even more if Santorum would drop out.

Establishment GOP will pull out all the stops to deny us our want.

Yep - saw a compiliation "smear the Newt" ad during the ball game last night. Mittens and the establishment GOP have their knckers in knots and are getting ready for a scorched earth campaign. IMO, it may not be the worst that can happen - it might very well cause an uprise against the Establishment and help them see the light... It will definitely harden hearts against Mittens as he proves he's too stupid to see (or care) what Newt understood from the beginning about this tactic.

He’s also destroyed his political career.

‘I can confirm tonight from multiple sources that phone calls are in fact occurring between Republicans in Washington and among evangelical leaders to raise money for Rick Santorum rapidly

The sources tell me that this is not for a Santorum win, though the evangelicals I spoke to continue to hope it is possible. This is to stop Newt Gingrich. One evangelical leader I spoke to said, “If Newt wins, we won’t be able to make family values an issue in the general.” One lobbyist I spoke to said, “They [the GOP leaders in DC] are really nervous about Gingrich and they think he’d be a disaster. The best way to shut him down is to prop up

I’m cautiously optimistic. Don’t forget that Newt was trailing Romney in South Carolina around this same before the vote.

Santorum and Romney are like two cornered animals who will stop at nothing to save their political careers. It’s going to be a rough 8 days, but resist we much...we must and we will much...about...that...be committed.

It’s stories like this that make me question the judgment of my fellow evangelicals. When I was a Santorum supporter, I remember having a conversation with a FReeper whose name escapes me in which he argued that social conservatives like me supported Santorum because we put family values above the economy. I pointed out that that wasn’t the case the me; at the time, I genuinely thought he had a better shot overall.

Having seen Santorum work his magic over the past couple of weeks, I can say with confidence that social conservatism is all he offers. He’s unlikable, he’s not particularly interesting, and he’s put his personal ambition above what’s best for the country (defeating Romney). His waffling on SOPA makes him inherently unelectable.

I can only shake my head in disappointment. These “evangelical leaders” are incredibly foolish.

“One evangelical leader I spoke to said, “If Newt wins, we won’t be able to make family values an issue in the general.””

Sorry, I don’t believe this. Just how were they going to make ‘family values’ an issue against Obama, when they couldn’t even make it an issue against Clinton?

In any case, ‘family values’ as a political strategy died in the 1990s - his quote is a hoax, the term isn’t even discussed anymore.

I’m wondering...

Where have all the anti-Newt FReepers gone? Are you all being quiet because you’re afraid of being banned, or have you changed your mind about the guy?

I started off, I admit, with major reservations about Newt’s tendency to put his foot in his mouth and the mountains of baggage he brings with him... but after a certain point I realized that if the guy has me clapping in the general direction of my TV set during the debates, he’s obviously the person I approve of the most... and the person I should be supporting.

As for Michigan, I think it’s safe to say that Mitt Romney isn’t really a hometown boy from there anymore-it’s just a ‘myth’ that he is.

Michigan’s republicans, IMO will be a lot like Ohio or somewhat like Indiana-and I currently live in IN, and did live in MI a few years ago..

It has become clear to me that lots of FReepers are on Twitter. I mentioned on another thread that we should think about doing a FR twitter account, perhaps one that is ‘managed’ by a few freepers. Lots of info is on FR, lots on Twitter and to make sure it is all passed around to active patriots, having a link between the two would be good.

Also, given the depth of knowledge here on FR, when it is time to take it to Omama, we can flood Twitter with useful information that hopefully will wake ppl up. Heck I have no problem flooding Twitter with stuff about Mitt. Twitter is also VERY useful for sending appropriate comments to our worthless media. If anyone thinks such a thing is do-able and would be worth it, perhaps we can have a dedicated thread to discuss how we would make it happen. We all know FreeRepublic is a powerful voice, and now that it IS getting down to Mitt vs Newt, we have a common target, MITT. After Newt takes it to Mitt, we all will get behind Newt and take it to Obama. For sure we will always have the media to go after, given the fact they have problems dealing with facts. Just my thoughts.

The minority vote (hispanic & black) is hugely for Gingrich over Romney. Also, the <65 years vote is in favor of Gingrich, and the younger you get the more in favor of Gingrich.

The black vote and the youth vote really surprised me in terms of Gingrich/Romney.
