Tennessee speed guns: Payback vow on NYers for 9/11 Memorial bust
NY Post ^ | January 20, 2012 | LAURA ITALIANO

Gun nuts in the Tennessee state legislature have declared civil war on New Yorkers — saying they will retaliate for the prosecution of a woman who was carrying an illegal pistol at the 9/11 Memorial. A resolution winding its way through the Tennessee legislature warns New Yorkers not to drive through their state — because the Highway Patrol is “gunning” for us. A Knoxville-based legislator, who moonlights as a farmer, is so angry over the Tennessee tourist’s gun arrest last month that his resolution condemns it as a “grave miscarriage of justice” — and reminds New Yorkers to “drive carefully” if we come visit.

“We remind the citizens of New York, especially those residing in New York City, to drive carefully through the great state of Tennessee, paying extra attention to our speed limits,” reads House Resolution 585, which urges charges be dropped against Meredith Graves. A registered nurse and fourth-year medical student, Graves was arrested when she tried to check her Tennessee-registered weapon at the 9/11 Memorial in December. It’s illegal to carry the weapon in this state. Graves faces a mandatory minimum prison sentence of 3 1/2 years if convicted of felony weapons possession; prosecutors have not said if they will seek an indictment on that or on a lesser charge.

Even though this is silly, any way to bring attention and heat on NYC for its crazy gun laws is a good thing.

It’s not silly at all. What goes around comes around

Good for Tennessee! And who said the South would never rise again?

Oh...I think the retaliation is a good thing, but looking for NY plates on the interstate? I dunno...seems a bit out there. But as I said above, it’s a good idea to bring attention to the issue.

It’s a fine way to make New Yorkers understand that the rest of the country won’t kiss their a$$es anymore.

“It’s illegal to carry the weapon in this state. “ - I’m fairly certain this is a false statement that the media just wishes were true. I believe that if you grease the correct palms or bust your ass to jump through all the hoops that NY does indeed issue concealed carry permits - any NYers want to confirm?

I think its a good idea. They should give them a $10,000 speeding ticket and two-months in jail for driving 5-10 mph over the speed limit. Screw Bloomberg!

Oh, there are much more effective forms of retaliation. For example, refuse to give “full faith and credit” to NY drivers licenses. What, that’s unconstitutional? Well, NY is failing to give “full faith and credit” to Tennessee concealed carry permits. I don’t see a difference, except that driving is not a Constitutionally protected RIGHT.

That said, this isn’t a bad start.

Tennessee Democrats tried some shenanigans against some Mississippi CCW permit holders and the Mississippi Troopers retaliated. When Tennesseans that had run into the mess here in Mississippi started calling their state representatives because of this, Tennessee Democrats changed their tunes and Tennessee recognizes the Mississippi CCW permits now. Maybe the Tennessee Democrats learned a lesson that they are turning on New York now. NYC is part of NY unfortunately.

The 2nd amendment gives this young lady the right to possess a gun.

Having lived upstate NY for 8 years and in NYC for 27 (and had a legal carry permit in NYC for 19 years) I can speak to this. NY State—other than NYC—is not really bad as far as guns go. The judges issue pistol permits to non-NYC resisents all the time. It’s NYC that’s bad, ad even when you cannot carry in NYC ( I am a physician so I could get one) a premises permit for a handgun is not hard to get. Long guns are no problem anywhere.

Ridiculous legislative works supported in one region will have consequences when the inherent flaws are forced on those from outside. Most New Yorkers know to be dishonest enough to avoid having such rules enforced on them.

And your logic is flawed regarding drawing attention to crazy gun laws. Progressives and gun-grabbers will use this problem to demand more uniform and consistant gun laws, ie...more laws.

I am sort of floored by the idea of a “3rd yr med student” showing up in Manhatten, and asking where to check he gun at the 9/11 memorial.

One of these facts is not like the others.

“Gun nuts”

Sad to see the NY Post talking about “gun nuts.” They used to be more sensible.

That said, Tennessee should arrest a hundred New Yorkers, charge them with felony obnoxiousness, threaten them with mandatory thousand-year sentences, then offer to trade them for the Tennessee woman.

FUNY.

FU leftards.

As a licensed FFL holder I can confirm.

I’ve seen NYC CCW’s, held by folk working in some level of NYC Gov, or closely related to such.

For example, one guy said it was no problem for him, his brother is an NYC judge.
Similar to some counties in Kalifornia.

I’ve been told that mobsters have no real problem getting permits either.
They have plenty of money and lawyers to deal with the process.

It’s not what the law says that counts, it’s who you know, or can pay off!

Note to TN: Be my guest, but don’t take it out on Upstate. NYC doesn’t speak for us.
