Obama: I'm going to Disney World
Chicago Tribune ^ | 1/17/12 | Mark K. Matthews, Jason Garcia and Sara K. Clarke

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama will visit Walt Disney World during a planned trip to Orlando on Thursday, according to a White House aide. There, he will "unveil a strategy that will significantly help boost tourism and travel," the aide added. Details on that strategy were not disclosed. But it would be hard for Obama to pick a locale that's better known than Disney for a tourism announcement. The resort giant in Orlando has four theme parks that collectively draw more than 45 million visitors a year. It doesn't appear, however, that he'll get much love from local politicians. Aides to U.S. Sen. Bill Nelson said the Florida Democrat was unlikely to attend because the office "got word too late" of the visit and had meetings planned in other parts of the state. And Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is scheduled to be in Washington that day for a meeting of the U.S. Conference of Mayors. While the details of the announcement are still unknown, there's one topic at the top of the political wish list for Central Florida's tourism industry: Visa reform. The tourism industry has been pushing Congress and Obama to make it easier for visitors from emerging nations such as Brazil, India and China to come to the U.S. as tourists. In Brazil, where citizens have a reputation for loving Orlando's theme parks, there are four consulate offices to conduct the required in-person interviews for people who want a visa to visit the U.S. That means families could have to travel several hundred miles before they are even approved to travel to the U.S. But a recent Congressional appropriations bill gave the Secretary of State the authority to develop a pilot program to use videoconferencing to conduct remote visa interviews for leisure and business visitors.

That’s funny I thought we were already in Disneyland with this administration. The White house is the “NEW” Disneyland.

Foreigners love going to inexpensive third world countries on vacation, particularly if the peasants are well behaved and generally friendly.

WDW is already unionized by the Teamsters. They’ve been rude or even nasty to my two young children. My 20-month old’s infraction was not saying “Thank you” to the attendant after she shoved a piece of candy into her hand during Mickey’s Not So Scary celebration. It was 4 hours past my daughter’s bed time and she was barely at speaking age. Let alone the fact the attendant was behind a waist high podium and it was dark. My daughter looked at the candy and then left and right and had no idea what was going on. She couldn’t even see the attendant at her level. Nonetheless the attendant yelled at her “Fine! No more candy for You!”. -At a 20-month old.

I could go on but instead I did not renew our annual passes. Busch gardens has much less retarded workers who are nice and helpful to kids. Instead of WDW I purchased annual passes to the new Legoland. Good riddance to the rat.

“we are lucky to keep gas in our vehicle and grocery shop on occasion...never have we struggled as we do to day.”

I hear ya loud and clear on that one. It’s the toughest out there I’ve seen since I was a little kid in the late 1970’s. High fuel prices and rising food costs (at least in my area) are squeezing even the most frugal folks I know.

Funny you should say that. We had a family reunion at Disney last summer. My teenaged nephew who has been to Disney every year since he was born (his dad was Chip or Dale or maybe Dumbo long ago) made it quite clear He was not a fan if Brazilians because of the way they acted at Disneyworld.

I feigned shock at his ethnically insensitive remark, but he stood his ground. Alas, I can not report first hand. Kids are grown, husband could not get time off so all I did was the pool and tequila. I took his word for it because by 1:00 I didn't care about no stinkin’ Brazilians.

When I hear the Empty Suit's voice, I think of things that would get the SS banging on my door.

I know which SS you mean, but with him in the White House, the other SS would be just as accurate a reference.

What’s he going to do, nationalize the airlines and theme parks, making them all free for “the workers”?
