OK, granted I’m not much of a roamntic, but she spent the rest of her life with him. Doesn’t that count for soemthing?

Yeah, but none of it is positive.

You do not condemn him? How stupid is that! It’s almost as stupid as him not being able to get over something that happened over 6 decades ago! What a total jerk! He probably had multiple affairs on her! If she had uncovered his, she would have been expected to forgive him and to work on improving the marriage. Perhaps he should have been a better lover to her, and he should have been there for her; then she wouldn’t have had to look elsewhere to fulfill her needs!

Its the longterm commitment that matters.

No. It’s the life time commitment that matters.

Well this is certainly a masterpiece quote - from a newbie, no less.

We don’t know from the article that he put her on a pedestal or treated her like cr@p. We just know they stayed married 77 years and she had an affair 60+ years ago. Yes, she betrayed his trust all those decades ago, but managed to keep her secret of a war-time affair to herself for all these years, perhaps from her own shame and guilt.

I think he’s entitle to a fling. Maybe a weekend with a cute 80 year old?

Half his age plus eight is appropriate. 99/2+8=57 He should be looking for a 57-year-old.

If they were members of the Religion Of Peace, wouldn’t an honor killing be ok?

If she was “in-love” with someone else, she should have told her husband she wanted out. There is no damned excuse for cheating period, ever. There are no excuses for such behavior. In a marriage, there should be no secrets.

Nope, not really. Shouldn’t he have had the choice of whether he was willing to spend the rear of his life with her? She didn’t give it to him. I have no sympathy for her.

You don’t know that he had any affairs at all. But my guess, he was true to her or he would not have reacted as he has. Women are cold blooded assassins when it comes to affairs of the heart and she should have told him she wanted out of the marriage. Likely what happened is her lover nailed her a few times and then dumped her ass.

If I found the truth about my wife of 48 years, I would not divorce her but would make her life a living hell without any abuse.

And your evidence that he had multiple affairs is?

Why is he a jerk? She was unfaithful. Even the New Testament permits divorce for that reason.

Reminds me of the Benny Hill routine, where an old couple is in bed.

Wife: “Were you ever unfaithful to me?”

Husband: “Just once honey, only once.”

Wife: “You sure could use that once now.”

This is more an interesting headline than well-written or informative article. I DO agree that I’d rather divorce than cheat. If I’m attracted to, much less ‘in love with’ someone else, it says my relationship with my spouse is over. But who knows, it could have been revitalized in this case.

On the other hand, this WAS in very Catholic, war torn Italy in 1944. It’s not the US 2011. I’m not even sure (and doubt) divorce was legal in Italy in 1944. It was awfully difficult to get a divorce in the US in 1944.

What I’m wondering about (and the story IS poorly written) is: how is it That HER love letters to her lover were found? Don’t you mail out your own letters? If he’d found the lover’s letters to her, it’d make more sense. Back in 1944 they didn’t have xerox, so people didn’t keep copies of letters they wrote and sent.
