Gingrich, Perry fail to make Va. ballot

(AP)WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.

"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10K signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.

Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.

State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.

Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

Huck is a Ron Paul supporter.

TitansAFC, I know it's Christmas Eve and you're from Illinois, but it's probably not a good idea to drink this early in the day.

If Huck is a Ron Paul supporter, this is the first that I have heard of it.

Probably, we should all get “Anybody other than Obama” sticker.

That's a very dangerous game to play.

One, you could get someone worse than Obama. Romney comes to mind.

Two, by giving in to "anyone but Obama," you signal that this election is not about electing folks who will govern according to the Constitution but merely about defeating Obama. At that point, you lose - judging by the polls, large swaths of the electorate still like Obama personally, even if they are not amused by his style of governing.

“Don’t kid yourself...the GOP establishment is going to do whatever is necessary to get the nomination to Romney.”

Yep, It’s obvious they had a hand in trashing Herman Cain too.

Getting tired of coronations, the system is badly broken.

"Let us atleast support Romney & try to drag him to the conservative side "

Dude...

So wrong on so many levels.

I was not advocating for Palin or anyone else to get in the race. We have a crowd now, thank you.

Romney? Really?

Please give me an example of when it would be a good idea to vote for Romney in a GOP primary?

We all know what got Obama elected - while many idiots fell for his "hope and change" BS, the real tipping point was race. So instead of "anyone other than Obama", how about this one:

The only problem is - a vote for Mitt is just as stupid as a vote for Obummer... Ugh.

In May, if still Santorum is running, I will vote for him in North Carolina ! If not, I will support Romney because he cannot be bad on Economy. All the other issues, there is no way he can do any thing without conservative base. Ask bush/cheney when they tried to nominate women judge to supreme court. Even cheney came in Rush to explain but we did not accept. But leaving Obama again will be death of conservatives/Republicans/capitalistic America

When people start smelling the benefits of socialism, they will stick with democrats for few more years till we all go bankrupt. Economy will get better from 2012 to 2016 and we can run the best candidate in 2016 and he/she will not win.

Oh, at first I thought that saints had signed his petition - then I saw that you were making it up. :)

Its totally broken.
The smart candidates saw ahead of time the hopeless situation, they saw the theater with floor drops and stagehands with hooks awaiting.
And the sheeple are bleating that they are scared and the NEED a leader, they don’t care who, they don’t look under his sheepskin, they don’t even stop to sniff to smell if he is one of them.

Its no wonder the underdogs will be the Independents.
I would not dismiss any Independent candidate at all right now, or one that waits until the very last minute, just to pee in the political pool so to speak.

“Well, the insiders are counting the votes.”

Yep! The Virginia rules benefit those who spend 5 years running for President, and hurt anyone who doesn’t have a lot of money and personnel early on.

However, the idea of Virginia only having two candidates on the GOP ballot is bizarre. If I was a Virginia voter, I’d vote RonPaul to screw the GOP.

The GOP primary process has been flawed for too many years to count. For example, in Virginia - "The 10,000 registered voters must also include 400 signatures from each of Virginia's 11 congressional districts."

Each state has different procedures, therefore the candidate with the most money can purchase the organization to get on the ballot.

You are right - Insane!

The only decent thing to do is vote Ron Paul in Virginia. Don’t worry, it’s not not enough delegates to get Ron to win, but it’s enough to slow down Mitt - and show that Republicans won’t have a candidate dictated to them.

(Full disclosure: I think Ron Paul’s a whackjob.)
