Gingrich, Perry fail to make Va. ballot

(AP)WASHINGTON — Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich has failed to qualify for Virginia's March 6 Republican primary, a development that complicates his bid to win the GOP presidential nomination.

"After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10K signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the Republican Party of Virginia announced early Saturday on its Twitter website.

Perry also fell short of the 10,000 signatures of registered voters required for a candidate's name to be on the primary ballot, but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Rep. Ron Paul will be on the ballot.

State GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said volunteers spent Friday validating petitions that the four candidates submitted by the Thursday 5 p.m. deadline to the State Board of Elections. Shipley was not available early Saturday to discuss the announcement posted on the website.

Failing to get on the ballot will be a major setback for Gingrich, who has tried to use his recent upsurge in popularity to make up for a late organizing start. Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney, with others farther back, in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

Good theory in thought but think about it a little further it also enables Obama an easier win. This whole mess is insane.

Oh stop it ! I don’t support the nut Ron Paul or Mitt Romney(born ready to become president) but in this case, it is perry and gingrich who messed it up. It is not a secret that gingrich is lacking the organization. Little bit surprised about perry. Probably in the last 2 months, perry had lost lot of supporters ! There is no big conspiracy ! This is what it is !

Too many hoops (Or red tape)? Maybe so, but Romney and Paul seemed to get the work done.

No way that many (even dead people) liked Obama in Va.

Clearly you've never spent any length of time in Northern Virginia.

I read that years ago the Democrats under the Harry Flood Byrd, Sr., organization kept down voter turnout to make it easier for the elite to say entrenched. Poll taxes were one way, but what else, I don’t recall? VA will surely give Romney 75 percent and “convince” many that he can sweep the South. Are write-ins allowed or counted there?

Face it, we have no choice in this election. Romney will be our candidate which, in turn, leads to an Obama win.

Afraid so. Communists have spent many years knowing how to screw the system. America is in the failing descend.

My point was that even the dems are not at all pleased with Obama. His liberal base has dwindled.I would bet if his signatures were audited there are Mickey Mouses. From what Ive read 15K and over and no audit. No one even looks at them???

RPV is determined to set a high bar to entry.

If you don't have a ground game (read $$$money$$$ here folks), or if you get in late, you will not qualify to get on the ballot in VA.

I'm OK with that.

We can just consider it the sober alternative to Iowa and NH.

I expect the ABR crowd will coalesce around Paul and his win there will not affect the race overall.

Unless, of course, the GOP convention then goes to brokerage.

No tellin' what could come out of that.

I was in northern Virginia for a few days in July; you are right, I saw Obama stickers and signs in several locations; none for any Republicans. VA is more liberal than most think. Proof: that ol’ John Warner, who never met a liberal cause he did not embrace

I think the supporters of the other candidates in VA will vote for Romney, as they are anti-Paul. They lack sophistication to try to negate a Romney win.

My point was that even the dems are not at all pleased with Obama.

You are correct on that matter.

However, that does not mean that they will come running to a joke like Gingrich or someone like Bachmann or Santorum. In fact, the establishment here likes Romney and is rooting hard for Romney - and I know this for a fact.

Just watch: the GOP nominee will be Romney. The GOP establishment will do anything - even buying or forging votes and strong-arming delegates - to get Romney, and yes, they do despise the Tea Partiers as provincial rubes.

Newt could always run as a third party candidate like anyone else and he wouldn’t need to qualify in Virginia!

So it was VOLUNTEERS validating the work of other VOLUNTEERS????..

And who were the VOLUNTEERS doing the validating affiliated with? Maybe Mittins? Like you said, it seems suspicious to me to have one set of volunteers validating the information of another set of volunteers.

We need to stop talking about all the broken conventions & palin entry at the late stage and so on. No one stopped us from going behind a conservative candidate. We keept going from one candidate to other except for Rick sanatorum. 2 days back Rush says, if Rick sanatorum becomes president, I will not worry about what he is going to do next. If that is the case, why the hell we cannot stand on principles and support a conservative Rick Sanatorum. He does not have executive experience? or he supported the rhino for senator in his state? Need to come out with better excuses. No point in trying to talk about sarah palin or other conservatives who are not in the race.

Let us atleast support Romney & try to drag him to the conservative side

That even speaks worse to Gingrich and Perry if all they needed was 15,001 signatures and they were on the ballot. How damn lazy can the campaigns be?

But then I don’t believe what you’ve read to be correct. JMO.

I grew up in this area, and although I want to leave at some point, I'm stuck here for now.

VA is more liberal than most think.

Virginia isn't necessarily liberal.

However, Virginia is for Big Government paid for by someone else. And, that's not entirely unreasonable, as Virginia is a major beneficiary of Big Government, particularly at the federal level. The major economic zones - Northern Virginia and Hampton Roads - are all awash with Federal dollars, mostly "defense" and "homeland security" funds.

Probably, we should all get “Anybody other than Obama” sticker. Even in places like chapel hill, NC-—they have 2012 stickers all over the place. They had it for John kerry too ! It does not mean a thing !
