Occupy Wall Street National Day of Action: Live Updates From Downtown Manhattan

Today is November 17, the two month anniversary since Occupy Wall Street began. Protestors have declared today to be an International Day of Action, calling for people to "occupy their block," to "shut down Wall Street" starting at 7:00 AM, and to "occupy the subway" starting at 3:00 PM. We have been hearing that protestors, and the NYPD, will be amassing all over the city today, and will be live blogging dispatches from our own Village Voice staff writers Rosie Gray (@_rosiegray) and Nick Pinto (@macfathom), as well as photographer C.S. Muncy (@CSMuncyPhoto), who are on the scene through out lower Manhattan.

5:15 AM: From the anchor desk here in downtown Brooklyn, we hear a helicopter that sounds like it is heading towards Manhattan. Nick sends two pictures: this one appears to be on an NYPD roll call, just north of the Wall Street bull:

Similar to the school bells that most of us heard during our school days, the New York Stock Exchange's (NYSE) opening and closing bells mark the beginning and the end of each trading day. More specifically, the opening bell is rung at 9:30am EST to mark the start of the day's trading session. At 4pm the closing bell is rung and trading for the day stops. There are bells located in each of the four main sections of the NYSE that all ring at the same time once a button is pressed.

global rev was interviewing a ‘family’ - parents and two little kids. Asked what the sign said. Well, I am not a newbie and I will agree that the mutual corruption among some businesses, some politicians and some banks has got to end. For the record, we are not living in a capitalistic society. Things right now are much closer to a fascistic society with all of the government regulation that currently exists.

For the question of why wasn't anyone prosecuted? Look who is in charge of the Federal Justice Dept.

The folks at Wall St. today (OWS’ers) believe in a socialist/communistic approach to the problems - FORCING the government to re-distribute wealth to the “less fortunate”, and to nationalize all markets and commerce to be controlled by the Federal Government as a central authority.
