Would a Cain implosion benefit Gingrich?
CBS News ^ | Naureen Khan

Posted on 11/03/2011 9:12:22 PM PDT by presidio9

Don't tell Newt Gingrich, but he's not running against a general election campaign against President Obama just yet.

The former speaker of the House campaigns for president with the air of someone with a real shot at the Republican nomination, steadfastly declining to take shots at his GOP rivals on the stump, lobbing criticism at the White House and describing for audiences what his first presidential press conference would be like.

Until recently, it all would have been written off in political circles as the work of the overly active imagination of a famously self-confident politician. But lately, Gingrich has reason to have a little more swagger in his step. His campaign, once stuck at the back of the pack, is experiencing a revival thanks to some sharp debate performances, an uptick in his once anemic fundraising, and the inability of candidates to go the distance.

With businessman Herman Cain's juggernaut stopped cold by an unfolding sexual harassment scandal, Gingrich is getting a second look from social conservatives and tea party supporters who long to get behind anyone but former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, the top-tier candidate who continues to disappoint them on the ideological purity test.

The former speaker, who led Republicans to congressional victories in the mid-1990s, is also benefitting from a dwindling GOP field as top-choice alternatives to Romney self-destruct: First, tea party darling Michele Bachmann of Minnesota, then deep-pocketed Texas Gov. Rick Perry and finally it seems, the charismatic Cain.

The latest CBS/New York Times, in late October, has Gingrich breaking into double digits nationally and at third place with a respectable 10 percent of the vote, a far cry from his situation in mid-summer, when his cash-strapped campaign nearly collapsed with the mass exodus of several senior aides. Also,

With businessman Herman Cain's juggernaut stopped cold by an unfolding sexual harassment scandal...

What's the basis for this statement, or is it the usual MSM editorial passing as a news article? On Tuesday, four days after the scandal broke, one poll show Cain with a 7% lead over his closest rival (Romney). An announcement yesterday stated that Cain had the single biggest fund-raising day every, raising over $1 million. This is CBS's definition of "stopped cold"? (They didn't hire Dan Rather back, did they?)

Cain isn’t going to implode and it’s looking like a Cain/Gingrich ticket. IMO

Are they not from the same state? If so, they will not be on the ticket together.

Fewer candidates in, benefits those who still are. Wow....this guy must have a political science degree.

Newt’s standing will improve until if or when Perry ever snaps out of his funk. Otherwise it will be Newt vs Romney because there won’t be anyone else left.

Or would a Cain implosion make Governor Palin rethink her position?

Take a deep breath and repeat after me:

Sarah Palin is not running in 2012.

Repeat until the truth finally sinks in.

I’ll either cast my vote for a decent, honest man, or I’ll watch America die.

In that case, why are you even bothering with this website?

Talk about your self-serving jackass remarks!

Regarding the Pelosi couch this.... if you have watched the You Tube video of Newt battling Henry Waxman on global warming, it might help. Newt is not some crazed global warming nut. ....and his position on dealing with “global warming” is pretty good. I have heard his come out against government punishing companies to solve “the problem”, and basically saying that we are all in favor of maintaining a clean, healthy planet, but you do it through incentivising businesses to minimize pollution.... not punish them. Basically.... very conservative solutions to a clean environment. He has a book... “Contract with the Earth”, which might get into this. I haven’t read it because the environment is item #2354 on my list of concerns.

Oh yeah. Cain’s supporters wouldn’t go to Perry or Romney so, yeah, they would go to Gingrich who is 2n choice for most Cain supporters anyway. :)

I think Gingrich is going to look very good as a result of that debate. All of this—his response to Cain’s being attacked, and this particular debate—is going to show Newt as being nice to a guy who isn’t up to snuff, while Gingrich will be up there sounding like an expert.

I’m not saying Cain isn’t smart. I’m saying Gingrich does very well in debates when it comes to specific policy questions. Cain seems very ‘normal’ but he just doesn’t have a lot of nuts-and-bolts answers. That’s one thing some folks like about him, but in this situation, Gingrich is going to come out on top, I think, and his public response this week is part of that.

Again, even if Gigrich were from Pennsylvania, he adds no value in the VP slot. Cain, OTOH, as a non-politician, a business leader, and (let's be honest) the fact that he's a minority, adds value regardless of where he's from. Sort of like in 2000, where the GOP was winning Wyoming's 3 votes with or without Cheney, but he had other valuable things to add to the ticket.

"Decent" and "HONEST"???

Didn't Cain get caught red-handed saying he "didn't recall" the details on this story, then later admitted he knew 10 days in advance it was going to break?

As far as "decent"... what if he did act improperly to female staffers?

Mary, Cain can go on twitter and raise money. And his supporters have all sent money in over the last few days which is great. But I’d doubt he’s attracted any significant brand new supporters during this whirlwind. I’d argue he’s gotten his money from his core supporters.

He doesn’t have a great campaign infrastructure. Nor does he have a top notch advisory team. Cain did not look Presidential with his five different explanations within 24 hours this past Monday. Nor does he now with his bashes at Rick Perry.

To the point of this article, there are really only two people on those debate stages the past two months that look Presidential. Newt and yes, Romney. And since Romney can’t break out of his 25% ceiling, I do think Newt is going to get a second look.

I’ll just be curious of Newt goes easy on Herman during the debate this weekend or he flat out tries to sneak in a knockout punch. Herman is going up against a master academic and great debater. I’ll be curious to see how he does.

They have already collected 296,000 ! This weekend is crucial for him ! If he can put behind all the accusations, he is going to go with a huge momentum. If we are still having new accusations on monday, he is done

Mending the public's perception of him as someone who won't compromise with Democrats under any circumstances.

In case you hadn't heard, presidential elections are decided by the undecideds.

I am aching to support Newt. But that danged Pelosi Couch thing is a huge problem for me.

Plus his old enthusiasm for immigration and pushing Puerto Rican statehood as House Speaker.
