PRINCETON, N.J., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Most Americans say they would amend the Constitution to swap the Electoral College with a popular-vote system to elect the president, a poll indicates.
Sixty-two percent of Americans prefer replacing the Electoral College and 35 percent would keep the current method for electing presidents, results from a Gallup poll released Monday indicated.
For the first time since the disputed 2000 presidential election, the majority of Republicans said they favor amending the Constitution, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.
That year, Democrat Al Gore won the national popular vote but Republican George W. Bush wound up with more electoral votes and was elected.
Those who advocate abolishing the Electoral College said they thought the system puts undue emphasis on a small number of swing states, Gallup said. Americans generally agree that the United States should adopt a system in which the popular vote prevails.

Yep meatheads in the east were foreseen as dangerous to the union ...that is why the founding fathers built it so....places like Montana, North Dakota, Colorado, Nevada and Texas could keep the swells in line even with thin populations. Who would have thought that all of New England would fall to the pinko Senators.

Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the executive and judicial officers of a state, or the members of the legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such state, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such state.
The remaining two seats per should be alloted to he majority winner of the state. If there is no majority winner, the two seats are split between the two top canidates.

However, neither state has ever split their electoral votes as a result.
Colorado had a proposition to split electoral votes proportionally, based on the popular vote:

I would like to see an analysis of the recent elections to determine the outcome if every state were to adopt the Maine/Nebraska method.

Most in the U.S. don’t have a clue as to the purpose of the Electoral College. They probably think its a private school.
OMGosh! This is absolutely astounding! What a sad indictment on the educational system of this country that 62% of Americans would scrap the electoral college. I shake my head in sad, disbelief.

May I please see who make-up of this poll?? I mean the percentage of Conservatives, moderates and marxists (er I meant LIBERALS) of the Rebublicans, Democrats and independents.

Ben Franklin was right, and if was the operative word.
Majoritarian democracy is incompatible with ordered liberty, and in our time would result in America being permanently ruled by the political preferences and moral inclinations of New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Chicago.
It will take a while to bleed out. But in the meantime, The Legislative branch has ignored its responsibilities, the Judicial Branch has ignored its responsibilities, and the outgoing admininistration under GW completely abdicated its Executive responsibilities.
If so many Americans believe the President to have run illegitimately, and thus ineligible to serve,do they not deserve a hearing? What if they are wrong? What if they are correct? It's a valid constitutional question and unless it is answered constitutionally, the rest of the document is, in the long run, worthless.
The official interpretation of Article II is missing.
