PRINCETON, N.J., Oct. 24 (UPI) -- Most Americans say they would amend the Constitution to swap the Electoral College with a popular-vote system to elect the president, a poll indicates.
Sixty-two percent of Americans prefer replacing the Electoral College and 35 percent would keep the current method for electing presidents, results from a Gallup poll released Monday indicated.
For the first time since the disputed 2000 presidential election, the majority of Republicans said they favor amending the Constitution, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.
That year, Democrat Al Gore won the national popular vote but Republican George W. Bush wound up with more electoral votes and was elected.
Those who advocate abolishing the Electoral College said they thought the system puts undue emphasis on a small number of swing states, Gallup said. Americans generally agree that the United States should adopt a system in which the popular vote prevails.

Apparently 62% of the US population are dumbasses!....red
then most don’t understand what it’s there for.
I’m sorry to say that many Americans would scrap their Republic altogether in exchange for some magic beans.
Count me as one who is against mob rule. Democracy by itself sucks.
This poll was conducted nationwide by telephone to 1006 people who actually answered the phone.
What does the statement mean ...the majority of Republicans said they favor amending the Constitution, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said...???
Were they really Republicans? Do they mean amending the Constitution in general, or specifically changing the rule about the Electoral College?
The Electoral College is the only thing that stands between a republic and dictatorial tyranny...........
Geez. Eventually, enough people will be brainwashed to scrape it and the Constitution.
Man ... there sure is a lot of dumbasses in this country
We actually need to go the other way - and repeal the 17th Amendment
Keep the Electorial college but seats should be decided by majority winner in each congressional district. If there is not a majority, then a run off is held between the top two candidates.
The remaining two seats per should be alloted to he majority winner of the state. If there is no majority winner, the two seats are split between the two top canidates.
Manufactured lies pushed as polling.
LLS
fixed it to what it might as well read.
If you want the inhabitants of New York, LA, & Chicago to elect your leader, then have at it. I live in a small southern town. I have little, if anything, in common with these people.
NPV is a high speed route to revolt.
That’s about right.
62% of Americans favor a mobocracy over a representative republic.
What could go wrong?
Waiting for the day James Madison rises from the dead, and bitch-slaps everyone who favors repeal of the Electoral College.
Repealing the 17th amendment would help the republic a lot.
Too many Americans think they live in or want to live in a democracy.
For nearly a hundred years the media and politicians have spoken of the US as a democracy, fought wars “to make the world safe for democracy”,”spread democracy” and other mistakes.
Democracy is nothing more than mob rule!!
I have heard many Americans say “majority rules” which is .of course democracy, not the republic which guarentees all basic rights regardless of the current popular opinion.
The Electoral College was adopted to prevent the larger states such as California, New York, etc. from dictating to the states with smaller voters, such as the midwest which is farm land. Hitlery was pushing this way back when Gore lost.
The result would be candidates campaigning in only the half-dozen most populace states, as THEY would determine the election!
Anybody surprised that 40 years of dumbing down our civics and history curricula contributes to this result?
No electoral college means no campaigning in about half the states.
We
Are
Doomed
You want Democracy? Look at the Middle East, and Africa.
My tagline explains why the Founding Fathers developed the Electoral College.
Liberals should get busy working on this right away. It will keep them busy for a half century.
People think they want it because they are stupid.
Eventually, they'll come to understand that it would mean the 10 or so largest cities in the US will pick the president.
Good luck getting ratification in two thirds of the states when that truth becomes known.
Same for small towns and rural areas everywhere in the country.
I live 70 miles from Detroit and about 30 miles from Ann Arbor. My little town has more in common with mars than it does either one of those hell holes.
that’s because the vast majority of americans have no knowledge of the u.s. constitution.
If the voter rolls were purged, a voter id system put in place and everyone had to re-register, although I would still NOT go for it, however it would be more representative of how this country really votes.
I would do Congress by District and Sentorial and Presidential by county. This way, as an example, NYC would have the same electoral vote value as Watertown. Gets rid of cheating.
When the left complains, there can be no disenfranchisement because if NYC wants to stuff the ballot box, it only affects the one county, hence only one vote. It doesn’t impact the entire state.
Polling is bought and paid for, not gauge public opinion, but to shape public opinion.
Anyone who has studied the left knows they have had the EC in their sights for a long time. The polls are bogus, but will provide cover as they ram this through.
After this, look for the two Senators per state to come under fire.
combine this fact with the democrats wanting to allow illegals to vote and you can clearly see what the 2012 obama re-election plan is:

The National Popular Vote bill would guarantee the Presidency to the candidate who receives the most popular votes in the entire United States. The National Popular Vote law has been enacted by states possessing 132 electoral votes 49% of the 270 electoral votes needed to activate it.
A simple rule for the good: If the UPI, NYT, LAT, etc are pressing for it...especially for a poll they’e conducted....it is NOT a good thing.
This article is a prime example of the failure of our joke of an education system (populated by teaching union members whose only distingishing characteristic is existing at the bottom of the SAT barrel).
There is a reason for the electoral college. Too bad the MSM never learned it.
Democracy = The Tyranny of the Ignorant.
Well, then “most” would be very unhappy when less than 10 states dictate national policy to all.
Democracy is two wolves and a sheep voting on "what's for lunch."
“A Republic, Madam, if you can keep it!”
Interesting that it comes up now that the “99%” are out in the street claiming to be a vast majority.
More fools who believe a lie.
...Agreed. A majority rule vote is a mob rule vote. That’s the reason for a Republic and not a democracy...
Most in U.S. are complete idiots. Did they not learn anything from Florida 2000? Without the electoral college, we would have recounts in every Dem city in the US every single election. No Republican would ever win the Presidency again. Every four years, the recounts in Chicago and Philadelphia would each generate an additional 10 million votes for the Democrat candidate, just to be sure.
Hence my screen name (just in case you didn't "get it". ;^)
Yep meatheads in the east were foreseen as dangerous to the union ...that is why the founding fathers built it so....places like Montana, North Dakota, Colorado, Nevada and Texas could keep the swells in line even with thin populations. Who would have thought that all of New England would fall to the pinko Senators.
it would be a terrible mistake.

Notably, this was written by “Staff”. Either this means that they are unable to interpret the actual poll information and had to make it up or they knew the methods were so bad that they couldn’t find anyone who wanted their name attached to the article.
Representatives shall be apportioned among the several states according to their respective numbers, counting the whole number of persons in each state, excluding Indians not taxed. But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the executive and judicial officers of a state, or the members of the legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such state, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such state.
The remaining two seats per should be alloted to he majority winner of the state. If there is no majority winner, the two seats are split between the two top canidates.
This is what Maine (since 1972) and Nebraska (since 1996) does:
http://archive.fairvote.org/e_college/me_ne.htm
However, neither state has ever split their electoral votes as a result.
Colorado had a proposition to split electoral votes proportionally, based on the popular vote:
http://www.archives.gov/federal-register/electoral-college/faq.html#colorado
However, the proposition failed.
I would like to see an analysis of the recent elections to determine the outcome if every state were to adopt the Maine/Nebraska method.
This is scary!...except to liberal Dems.
If the UPI is shilling for it, it must be bad
Most in the U.S. don’t have a clue as to the purpose of the Electoral College. They probably think its a private school.
