New gaffe: Obama hails America's historic building of 'the Intercontinental Railroad'
September 23, 2011 | 5:24 am
"Were the country that built the Intercontinental Railroad," Barack Obama.
That's what the president of the United States flat-out said Thursday during what was supposed to be a photo op to sell his jobs plan next to an allegedly deteriorating highway bridge.
A railroad between continents? A railroad from, say, New York City all the way across the Atlantic to France? Now, THAT would be a bridge!
It's yet another humorous gaffe by the Harvard graduate, overlooked by most media for whatever reason. Like Obama saying Abraham-Come-Lately Lincoln was the founder of the Republican Party. Or Navy corpseman. Or the Austrian language. Fifty-seven states. The president of Canada. Etc.
If you talk as much as this guy likes to talk instead of governing, if you believe you are a Real Good Talker as much as this guy does, you're gonna blow a few lines. But this many?
No doubt, we'll see a collection of Obama's Best Bombs on 'Saturday Night Live' this weekend, one right after the other. No doubt.

The other point that he and his liberal friends miss is that the TRANS-Continental Railroads wwere built by private industry without government “infrastructure” money. There wasn’t even an income tax then.
I enjoy how Obama has constantly "acted stupidly" and made them look idiotic, too.
Obama is a very thick, dull, person.
I know of two intercontinental railroads--the Trans-Siberian Railroad, which runs from Moscow to Vladivostok, Russia, and Turkey's Republican State Railroad, which offers rail service between Asian and European Turkey. However, I doubt if the US had a hand in building either of these railroads.
If it was he would have said Intergalactic Highway. Of course the Earth gets destroyed for the off ramp. But hey, so long and thanks for all the fish.
I think that you will find that the Union Pacific and Central Pacific had substantial backing from the Federal government.
Somewhere, an Indonesian village is missing its idiot.
Who do you think sent the new sheriff to Rock Ridge?
Who do you think sent the new sheriff to Rock Ridge?
Andrew Malcolm, LATimes’s house conservative. Pretty good one, too.
That statement can be shortened to affirmative action hire.
I’d love to see how they laid railroad tracks across the Ocean bed. When do we get to see this marvel of engineering?
The Sheriff is near!
I liked the guy with the Palomino horse and the Gucci saddlebag a whole lot better.
Each railroad was given 6400 acres of land, which they could sell to settlers to help populate the route with customers, and each railroad was paid $48,000 per mile of track laid.
However, they had 14 years from the passage of the Pacific Railroad Act of 1862 to complete the job, or they would forfeit ALL the land AND the money.
And in typical Government fashion, the two lines passed each other in Utah because no one was thinking ahead to establish a junction point.
Promontory Point, Utah was selected and the Golden Spike was driven on May 10, 1869. 7 years ahead of schedule.
Has anyone else read the transcript that follows the LA Times article? Barack Obama is completely delusional, and an outright liar. And, it is abundantly evident from the transcript and the crowd response, the “speech’ was delivered to a hand-picked friendly union group.
It’s truly sickening stuff to read. This is the POTUS???? What has happened to the USA? What has happened to the democrat party?
“so the LA times has switched flags, has it?”
Actually, it seems like they have. I’m totally amazed at the continuous stream of anti-0bama (actually simply truth-telling) articles that are coming out about 0bama from the L.A. Times on a daily basis. Right now, it’s the only major daily bird-cage-liner media outlet that is telling some truths about 0bama.
Not sure why. I suppose they figure they can have their cake and eat it too, namely, they can slam him all they want, thereby creating buzz for themselves, yet knowing all along 0bama’s going to win California with no sweat no matter what gets said or what happens.
I dunno...all I know is that
His handlers were probably thrilled that he didn’t say “Intercollegiate Railroad”
Yes, the Intercontinental Railroad was a Teutonic Shift in history!
I think it was either Governor William J Lapetomine or Heddy Lamar.
No, that’s Hedley!!
Mocking barry has lost some of its fun, now that even hardened leftist don’t even try to defend him.
LOL Almost snorted my coffee.
Remember the old wall poster from the 1970s? A Promontory Point type scene - but at the point where the rails joined, the southernmost rail from one side joined the northernmost rail from the other. I believe the caption was "Thank God It's Friday".
Yeah, wasn't he the feller who spoke purtier that a twenty-dollar whore?
Maybe to the extent that the government gave them the power of eminent domain/inverse condemnation so they could take the land they needed, but did it provide any funding?
And they went "intercontinental" with their evil plans. I guess that fellow returned with a shitload of dimes, after all.
Hims don’t knows hims hist’ry real goods.
Unfortunately there is one thing standing between me and that property: the rightful owners.
Wait a minute... there might be legal precedent. Of course! Land-snatching!
Land, land... "Land: see Snatch".......Ah, Haley vs. United States. Haley: 7, United States: nothing. You see, it can be done!
Good thing I wasn’t drinking my morning coffee when I saw this. Epic. Simply Epic.
Millions of slaves lost their lives.
Trans...inter...whatever. It’s not like Dan Quayle or George Bush said it.
It wouldn’t be a bad idea from Alaska to Vladivostok, provided it could be insulated from gales, or from Spain via Gibraltar to Fez. I believe there is a railroad from European to Asiatic Russia.
You’re brilliant if you go to Harvard Law School and discover that all the political indoctrination you’ve been exposed to is so much nonsense, and the truth is usually the exact opposite. But most students at Harvard are not that smart.
He is an idiot. What was his last gaffe? That someone formed the republican party?I think his worst is Navy Corpsemen.Did he ever apologize for this?Oh and don’t forget his citing of a soldier to come on up and the soldier was dead or something? Also was it Obama or Biden asking a man in a wheelchair to stand or come on up?
“What has happened to the democrat party?”
It was taken over by the Radical International Socialists, and the DEMOCRATS were run out.
Remember what Howard Dean said after the 2004 Kerry Loss?
“We OWN the Democratic Party now, it’s ours, we paid for it!”
What a bourgeois concept. It's PASS. There is no FAIL at HLS.
I can’t wait until David Letterman revives his “Great Moments in Presidential Speeches” routine.
Actually only one of the transcontinental railroads (US) was privately financed, the “Great Northern”. The real gaffe overlooked here is the premise that the transcontinental railroad was a great success. See:
The whole discussion on market entrepreneurs vs. political entrepreneurs is quite enlightening, but specific to this discussion, scroll down to the section “James J. Hill versus the Real Robber Barons”.
“You had to go to college to say something that stupid”.
— Dennis Prager
“The oceanic rails were REALLY difficult. Lay a rail, come up for air, lay a rail come up for air...”
You silly goose, the wooden cross ties held them up!
That’s one long-ass train! Love those rails that float on top of the ocean.
I think he meant to say that we are the country that built the Intercontinental Hotel.
Hmmm Hydro-phobic rails...spec sheets don’t ask and don’t tell bedding.
Knows it? He really believes that he is America’s Suharto. Seriously.
