Two American hikers who were detained in Iran have been sentenced to eight years in prison on charges of "illegal entry" and "espionage," the state TV website says.

No doubt, but I must confess that I have no sympathy for Berkeley students who go out hiking in these of all places secure in the knowledge that if anything were to happen, the United States military would put themselves at risk to save their Peace Studies butts.
I does bring the Carter glow to this presidency, though.
Hiking in Iran while American. What could go wrong?
Sounds like they were looking for trouble and found it. Bismarck famously said that the Balkans were not worth the bones of one Hessian grenadier. I’d say these two are not worth a stern warning from Hillary Clinton.
The Iranian's know that Obama's just as weak and impotent as Jimmy Carter was.
Meanwhile the command center at the 'Vineyard' switches to CRISIS MODE: "What do you mean you're out of arugula?!?"
Were probably not getting the whole story. During Vietnam, communist sympathizers hiked across the border from Cambodia to show solidarity against the oppressive American regime. They were executed as spies. As I recall at least one of these Iranian border hikers hailed from Berkley or Cambridge; cant recall which now. But its likely they went to Iran for the same reason.
It seems inconceivable from the lefties that a fascist regime will not throw open its arms as the VC did for Jane Fonda. What a reality check this must be for them.
Think about it logically. Who is going to go hiking in the sh*tpit capital of the world when the US has the best trails and scenery in the world?
Mike
Though there had been news stories that this was headed for a better resolution. Am I mistaken and if not, what happened?
Why do I feel like this is a set-up for Hussein to give Iran something they want and/or He wants to give them?
For the Fraud, it’s all about the destruction (er, excuse me, fundamental transformation) of America.
Any “Foundation” readers?
This Peas of Sh!t reminds me of “The Mule”.
Thought
Iran realized the pair were good for a future trade.
Again?
I didn’t know that there was such a strong wanderlust for the hills of Iran.
Youth is truly wasted on the young, ignorant and idealistic. At least when they get out of prison, they will likely be rock ribbed conservatives - if they survive, which is highly unlikely.
Sure, everyone hikes along the border in a war zone. Stupid is as stupid does. Whatever their motive, reality smacked them up side the head. Now, they’re going to whine for our guys to risk their lives to save them or Iran will want some sort of concession from us. The idiots deserve what they get.
Oh, these are the same hikers from years ago.
My mistake
“Iran realized the pair were good for a future trade.”
Yeah, more secure than buying American debt.
What possibly could have been going through their minds when they decided to hike near Iran? They should be punished for just being STUPID.
How I spent my summer vacation..
Two friends and I thought it would be fun to hike along the border of a war torn country and a paranoid, kook filled, anti-American nation.
.......
Sorry, I can’t seem to be able to generate any sympathy for these idiots.
IIRC their idea was to make a political statement.
They should said they were looking for work or even better amnesty..?
.... or better health care?
We still don’t know if they may release them.
I don’t really care if they release them at all. Berkeley students...ha! Screw them.
Another FReeper who knows members of one family, said that one hiker (Josh Fataal) was in Iraq researching family roots. I think the FReeper said Josh’s grandfather was Iraqi. The 3 were on a hiking trail that is within Iraq, but is watched by Iranian patrols. It is believed that they were abducted and brought over the border into Iran.
Ping to post #23
You beat me to it, that was exactly my thought.
My prediction: In a couple of weeks, they'll be released, and Obama will be given huge credit for his brilliant negotiating skills.
We won't be told what Iran got in return.
If they weren’t Berkley Peace Studies graduates, I might be able to see your point.

Why does it matter what school they went to?
They’re American citizens abducted/kidnapped by Iran
If we can think of it, then certainly the Fraud’s handlers can, but are they stupid enough to think this will actually give the messiah an Iran “bounce”?
Will Maxine feel any less tired?
Will this re-energize votes from his base?
Stay tuned next week when that Krazy Kenyan Kommie pulls a rabbit out of his hat!
I posted this on the other thread with the same subject:
LESSON:
Tresspass into Iran - get arrested, lose 1/2 your body weight and end up in prison for 8 years.
Tresspass into the United States of America - get free food, subsidized housing, free education, free medical care, jobs, throw your trash everywhere, spit on the citizens, and you dont even have to speak English.

You believe what Big Media tells us?
I’d say if Iran executed them, the students would be eligible for a Darwin Award. What were they thinking???
“If someone, even a fellow citizen, goes sticking pins in rattlesnakes, I feel no obligation to dive into the snake pit to extricate him.”
How is hiking a scenic trail “ sticking pins in rattlesnakes”? And no one is asking you to “dive into the pit”. Even standing around the pit trying to help or give advice or showing concern is different from standing around the pit laughing or making snide remarks & walking away.
Good. Idiots.
I believe what a FReeper who is familiar with the family said.
And I think I’m pretty familiar with how IRI likes to operate.
“No doubt, but I must confess that I have no sympathy for Berkeley students who go out hiking in these of all places secure in the knowledge that if anything were to happen, the United States military would put themselves at risk to save their Peace Studies butts.”
It is so stupid for them to be there that they probably were spying, though I have no idea who they work for. American 15 year-olds know it is too dangerous to be there (even on the “right” side of the border).
Nuke their sorry asses off the face of the earth unless they release them. Give them ten minutes. It’s a win-win.
these were lefty troublemakers...let them rot.
In 2005 I was in a Blackhawk that flew over the Iraqi side of the border in that area and even though we were armed to the teeth, increased stress was there. I can’t imagine any one hiking on those trails.
“During Vietnam, communist sympathizers hiked across the border from Cambodia to show solidarity against the oppressive American regime.”
The Khmer Rouge did the same thing to journalists dying to get the story (literally).
WHO??? Barack Hussein zer0bama???
you gotta be kidding? we ARE in the lead of Islamic Extremism...
Still too many people, even here in FR, who think Zer0bama is bad, but not evil...he is evil and out to destroy all things American..
It’s like deja vu all over again.
feh... lets hope this is a learning experience for them not to play with fire, something their parents obviously never taught them but should have
I’m wondering if the harsh sentence will make the Iranians look more magnanimous when they release them during rama-dama-ding-dong?
Iraq is not safe. In July, I heard Iranian Revolutionary Guards attacked a Kurdish (Iranian) Opposition grp, which also operates out of Iraq (PJAK) - they are not militant Kurdish ones like PKK (mostly in Turkey). Fact is that Iraq isn’t safe for much, including hiking. And, holding a US passport won’t help much. Iraq is increasingly under the Iranian mullah regime’s influence.
winoneforthegipper: I thought those American hikers were jailed months ago.. old news?
