Conservative Chicago Radio Host Fired Over McDonald’s Boycott
The Blaze ^ | 7/31/2011 | Christopher Santarelli

Posted on 08/01/2011 4:49:25 AM PDT by blueyon

This story involves one man’s personal family tragedy, a conservative talk radio host…and McDonald’s.

And now the Tea Party and a Chicago chapter of the NAACP are banding together to protest against WVON-1690-AM, “The Talk of Chicago.”

Lenny McAllister has been a conservative talk-show host on WVON-AM.

He’s also been a mentor to 21-year-old Jentri Casaberry.

Casaberry took time off from his McDonald’s night manager job to be at the bedside of his premature son during the final hours of his life. The baby died in just the first week of life.

Casaberry says McDonald’s then fired him for not showing up to work.

The word made its way to McAllister who shared the story with listeners, telling them to take a “holiday” from patronizing McDonald’s franchises owned by the operator who fired Casaberry.

Getting his job back at McDonald’s probably changes nothing for him in the long run. McDonald’s will never view him the same.

This seems like it could have been handled in a less public way by both the host and station and McDonalds for that matter. The host should have asked for a private meeting with the McDonalds rep. If McDonalds had evidence that the manager deserved to be fired for other reasons, they should have presented it and the host should have accepted it. If they did not, they should have showed some mercy and hired him back (at least to avoid the bad publicity).

Before I jump on the bash McDonald’s band wagon a couple of things here. Did he just not show up for work that night? The way the story is written it appears he did just that. Is this McDonald’s corporate owned or a franchise? By boycotting, you are really hurting the other workers there.

There is more to this story that what is being reported. I have never worked for a company that did not make consessions for family emergencies.

I do have a soft spot for McDonalds. Why? Because in 1991-1992 my youngest son Timmy was fighting leukemia. We stayed at Ronald McDonald House at NO COST TO ME. It was a wonderful experience.

Like I said there is more to this story than meets the eye.

As some here, and over at the Blaze have said, there may be more to this than meets the eye.

But still (and of course aside from the tragedy of the poor man’s son dying) this is maybe, kind of, a good thing.

I’m amazed to see the NAACP stand up for a black conservative, that is for sure.

Family emergency, does that imply he was married to the mother? Is that detail relevant?

The radio business is barely limping along. You can’t have your employees battling your customers.

But on the other hand it’s good the Tea Party is supporting him. Sometimes it’s more important to be loyal to your friends than it is to be right.

Read the story.

That’s rich.

True, but perhaps because of the publicity, he will be offered a job elsewhere. One of McDonald's competitors could make hay out of this.

Shame on whoever made the decision to fire this guy.

Who in their right mind eats McDonald’s cardboard food? Get this good man a job in a real restaurant.

Well, you will probably not see or hear any report of this story in the State-run, Lame-Stream, national media.

I do not know, and it isn’t relevant to me.

My REAL shock is that there's a Conservative working at WVON(1) in the first place.

an a side: I haven't listened to WVON in a gazillion years. My buddy Johnny turned me onto it in '63 and I found... MOTOWN... and the wonderful music of: The Temps, Four tops, Smokey, etc, etc. We were prolly the only two white kids on the SW side of Chicago who listened to WVON ;-)

(1) WVON stands for, Voice Of the Negro (the 'W' is req'd for all Radio and TV stations east of the Mississippi.) WVON got pretty Radical during the Black Panther Days, and continued that way afterwards.
