The Car That Thinks It's A Tank: Inside Obama's 'Beast' Cadillac that is being flown from the U.S. to drive down the Mall By CHRIS GREENWOOD and REBECCA ENGLISH 23rd May 2011

An extraordinary entourage will accompany President Obama and his wife Michelle when they sweep into London tomorrow. The team of at least 500 will include White House aides, a six-doctor medical team and a squad of personal chefs. There will be more than 200 secret service agents, many of them armed. The President will travel in ‘The Beast’, his gigantic bomb-proof General Motors Cadillac with eight-inch thick armour-plating on its doors. The limousine will be accompanied by a motorcade of at least 20 vehicles plus a dozen police motorcycle outriders.

He will land in Britain on Air Force One. But if this picture is anything to go by, Barack Obama might prefer journeying by sea rather than plane. Dressed in a pirate hat, eyepatch and striped red shirt, the ten-year-old Obama was posing before a Hallowe’en party. He is also decked out with a homemade sword, earrings – and a drawn-on moustache and beard. The photo is part of an exhibition by residents of flats in Honolulu,

That vehicle served the last president

"The Beast" made its debut at Obama's inauguration.

My Father was in the 208th Engineers Combat Battalion in WWII.

Another child of a member sent me the official U.S. Army history of the Battalion.

There was one thing which struck me as strange to the point of being hard to believe. When clearing mines, they said they once pulled 18 mines out of a single six foot by six foot plot.

Hard to believe they could even have put that many in so small a place.

There comes a point where the cost of protecting an American president just isn’t worth it. Republican or Democrat.

The amount of money spent on these visits is atrocious. Not worth the expense beyond prudent protection.

It is a turbo diesel, pretty much the same engine as the new HUMVEE diesel. My understanding it is an all mechanical engine (uses the older style mechanical injection system instead of the newer electronic controlled system).

Also, all hydro/mechanical style transmission (again, no electronics). All done to make it EMF proof. Can run on jet fuel as well as diesel.

With that engine, it is likely geared to be able to push through nearly any obstacle, I doubt it can top 60 MPH.

Yep....bad joo joo when they salt ares with AP or foot poppers. I have found anti tank mines stacked 3 deep with multiple boobytraps to get me or an engineer tasked if we weren’t available. Most boobytraps ever encountered were in a drug house an the woods around it. Over 200 IEDs. We were part of a JTF fir drug interdiction. Took us close to a day to clear em after a week of locating all of em.

Some as simple as shotgun rounds in pvc pipe as foot poppers an devices in bales of weed.

Crazy world....

Thanks! FR is cool, that’s neat about the EMF. Didn’t even think about it being a deisel, ignites with compression, no spark, right? If there was an EMF incident, could you start it somehow? Do batteries get fried, or just electronics? Sorry for the questions, just that you seem to know a lot more than me about it!

Thanks but I still have dial-up service in this rural area. It would take me an hour or more to download a single song.

Fortunately, my telephone repairman says it looks like I will get broadband by July. Technically it will not quite get this far but he says he can stretch it.

For a couple of years I have been giving him pears, pecans, figs and scuppernongs every time he stops by which probably helps.

I like the illustration of Obama in the back of that car. He looks like an African dictator on a throne.

Thanks for the link.

armor penetration 1.34” at 500 meters.

Interesting! Pretty bad round.

Suspect there is something more sophisticated out there that is designed to burn through armor.

Is this a little extravagant or is it just me?

Well, if other presidents got this same deal then it’s understandable. But what is the real purpose of the visit here to someone whose foreign policy has been a disaster.
