Found near her vehicle which means she was standing in the middle of the road. Like sometime during those 56 days the thought never crossed her mind to walk back down the road until she found civilization? Something smells like a dead husband’s life insurance check.

Either the vechile was packed to the roof with trail mix and water or she had a bbq. Nothing of her story makes sense.

I once took a little detour on a dirt road on the Navajo reservation in AZ in early March. I didn’t get stuck in the mud, but it was a close call. Took about $10. at the quarter car wash to get the rental car presentable again.

Hope she didn’t have a supply of long pork.

There was some reality survival game show a few years back where the contestants had to make survival gear from an old vw. It was interesting.

The husband did that and never came back. So she says... did they find any evidence of him walking back down the road?

Sadly this happens more often than people realize. Driving off road, unprepared, into very remote areas is dangerous. Three skeletons were recently found in remote sections of Death Valley National Park. Two of them were tourists from Germany, missing for over nine years. That's one thing you can bank on - no matter how far off the beaten track you go, you'll always meet a German tourist.

We drove down a state highway in NM once and lesson learned. The map said partially paved which was true because at about the mid point in the 3-4 hour drive there was about 25 yards of pavement. The rest was something straight out of “Deliverance”, which I kept humming to hubby and for some reason he still gets mad. It was one lane and on a cliff. The brush was scraped off the upper cliff side where cars tried to pass each other. The lower cliff side was a straight drop to a bottom you couldn’t see. Then there was the bridge with a sign “Hole in Bridge”... hubby gets mad at me when I randomly say that too for some reason after all these years, snicker, snicker. But what takes the cake were the hicks wandering through the woods in overalls and carrying shot guns. Now, hubby and I both grew up wearing overalls in the country but these were a whole new species of humanoids - que the dueling banjos!

I spent a week in Elko one day. I remember waking up one beautiful sunshine morning there after a snow storm...It was 10 below but ice was still melting in the sun.
I was there about 1969-70 for just a few months but it was some of the best times of my life.

A fourth was putting gasoline into a dished hubcap to generate a warming fire (many of you may ask, "what's a hubcap?").Ha! These days, most hubcaps are made from plastic.

...there was a camp of Elko boys having ATV races at 2 am. Naked and tearing across the outback.
I suspect beer was involved.

Two essentials: a cell phone and a good GPS. Not in the same unit.
Have read stories of people being lost while fourwheeling and having cell phone reception. They were able to give the searchers/police their GPS coordinates.
Actually, I had decent cell phone reception at the top of one of Colorado's fourteeners. Called my wife from the top.

I was watching a survival show that critiqued a family that got lost in the Sierras during a snow storm. The first thing the survivalist said was that the couple should have set their spare tire on fire so that the black smoke would attract attention. If they planned on walking out, they should cut up the car cushions and strap them to their feet to aid in walking and keeping their feet dry.
