Frontline: Priests Molested “Nearly 80% Of The Town’s Children”
The New Civil Rights Movement.com ^ | 4/19/11 | David Badash

Posted on 04/19/2011 7:42:19 PM PDT by Dr. Scarpetta

Frontline’s next exposé focuses on the “decades of abuse of Native Americans by priests and other church workers in Alaska,” and in one particular town they find, “nearly 80% of the town’s children were molested” by Catholic priests.

As we reported on this story just a few weeks ago, the Roman Catholic Church, as part of ongoing lawsuits, will make payments to approximately 700 male and female sexual and psychological abuse, molestation, and rape victims who were living in Alaska Native villages and Indian reservations from Montana to Washington, Idaho and Oregon, and who were “sexually or psychologically abused as children by Jesuit missionaries in those states in the 1940s through the 1990s,” according to a statement by attorneys.

The latest agreement will financially compensate 524 victims with $166.1 million in cases including accusations against 140 Jesuit priests, brothers, and nuns from the Oregon Province of the Society of Jesus, in the Pacific Northwest. Only $48 million will come from the Catholic Church, the remainder will be paid by its insurance companies.

None of the Jesuit priests are being charged with any crime related to this abuse, rape, and molestation settlement.

Nice timing for this Frontline Story during Easter Week.

I'll be waiting for their expose on Muslim honor killings to be aired during Ramadam.

Yes, because the message of loving thy neighbor as thyself, and turning the other cheek rather than retaliating, and making oneself the servant rather than the master, etc., is bad, but the message teaching that killing all who don't agree with you is good.

I don't recognize the world anymore.

An order of US Catholic priests has agreed to pay $166 million to hundreds of Native Americans sexually abused by priests at its schools.

Father John Morse is involved in thirty-eight of the claims.

I worked for the Alaska northern diocese a while back. The largest geographical diocese in the world with the fewest priest and smallest population. The jesuites were sent there and left entirely alone for years. No help, no supervision. No excuse but perspective that no one could have known these atrocities were going on.

Your comments are unfair. I have never sent money to PBS.

It's important that people who molest children be brought to justice.

Teachers, coaches, counselors, and pastors who molest children belong in jail.

I grieve for children who have been molested. Their lives are ruined.

Its also Child Abuse Prevention month. The priests didn’t stop raping kids just because it was holy week. What the priests did was hardly “holy”, and their higher ups covered this up through all the weeks of the year.

Also, this show was supposed to be on a few weeks earlier, but there was a change in order when they did the Bradley Manning episode.

"Clarita Vargas, a Colville Tribe member and Yakima resident abused at an Omak boarding school, and attorney Blaine Tamaki speak to reporters Friday after announcing an $166 million settlement with the Northwest division of the Catholic Jesuit order.

Pending court approval, the settlement will be paid to about 470 people abused as children at boarding schools operated by the Society of Jesus, Oregon Province, including the Omak school where Vargas was victimized."

I wonder if there's any connection between this story, and the other heartbreaking stories of priests who violated their trust, and this:

"Twenty-nine years have passed since that day, June 29 1972. It was the Feast of Saint Peter, Prince of the Apostles. It was the Feast of Saint Paul who brought the Gospel of Christ to the extreme corners of the West. On that day, June 29, Feast of the Patron Saints of Rome, Peter’s successor who had taken the name of Paul issued a dramatic warning. Paul VI spoke of God’s enemy supreme, that enemy of man called Satan, enemy of the Church. “The smoke of Satan”, warned Paul VI, “has found its way into the Church through the fissures”. It was an anguished warning that caused great shock and scandal, even within the Catholic world."
Think also of the 19-year-old woman who blasphemed in the presence of Pope John Paul II, "speaking in a cavernous voice," according to witnesses, and was heard to say "not even the head of the church can send me away" after the Pontiff had left the area.

This incident happened during a general Papal audience, in St. Peter's Square, on September 11, 2000.

Google must be worse than I thought, using sources such as these. Here what the site's about page says:

"A B O U T

by David Badash on November 26, 2008 8Share

Like millions of other gay Americans, I was outraged on November 4th when California passed Proposition 8, and ended a basic human right, the right to love another person, to be accepted by another person, and the law. And like millions of other gay Americans, I was unaware that similar decisions were being made that same day in other states. In Florida, and in Arizona, the right for one man to marry another, or for one woman to marry another, was stolen from us too. Just as unconscionable, in Arkansas, the right of gay couples to adopt was taken away from us.

There are countless reasons why we lost these battles. Perhaps the greatest reason is the one I just stated: “I was unaware”. My ignorance about what was happening to me, a gay man who at long last has someone he wants to marry, and for the first time in his life sees marriage as possible, not only because there is someone I want to marry, but because the populace has become far more “tolerant” of gay marriage, my ignorance was worse than the ignorance of those who don’t understand gay marriage. My ignorance was easily avoidable. My ignorance was a lack of information; I was uninformed.

Ignorance about the concept, the essence of gay marriage by those whom are morally conditioned to be in disagreement with it is in some respects understandable, although by no means acceptable or tolerable: You were told that it goes against the Bible. You have never seen a gay couple. You are intolerant of others. You are ignorant. You need to be educated and learn that there are others in the world who are built differently.

But, in the Information Age, to be ignorant because information is not readily available is inexcusable. Hence, the purpose of “The New Civil Rights Movement: Gay Marriage and Gay Rights“. This website is dedicated to keeping you informed of all the issues in the gay rights arena, especially gay marriage. Because weddings are bliss, ignorance is not.

This is a blog. It represents some of my personal thoughts. It is an opinion piece. I try very hard to verify facts, to research my positions, to substantiate the words and thoughts I express here. I am often happy to enter into a public or private discussion. If you or your organization disagree with any statement I make here, I am happy to discuss your point of view. If you can change my mind, I will change my words. Hopefully, you feel the same."

Could we just pause and take a deep breath? I'm Jewish so I don't really have any knee-jerk reason to defend the Church and its priests. But I do have Catholic friends who I think would now admit to "strange" treatment and ALL deny that anything untoward ever happened to them of their friends so far as they knew. It's not the same way with TEACHERS.
