MIAMI— Customs inspectors in Miami have intercepted five pests that had never been seen before in the U.S. during this year's first three months.
The list includes a longhorn beetle found in railroad ties from Argentina, a leafhopper in a mint shipment from Colombia and a moth in a container of fresh okra from Honduras.
The bugs were found by Customs and Border Protection agriculture specialists at Miami International Airport and Port Everglades in Broward County.

Longhorn bettles are REALLY bad. Areas of Massachusetts have been hit really hard by them.
I’m a bit confused....Customs Inspectors indicate that the Longhorn beetle has never been seen in the USA before but yet you indicate that they are a problem in MA. What gives?

No kidding. I grew up in an area surrounded by mint fields here in Michigan. I can still remember the smell of rotting mint.
I’m only guessing but probably a different species of the same creature. I live in S. FL and we are being overrun by invasive species. Some are fairly benign (altho I suppose if you are the native species you don’t think so—but in the big scheme of things, does it really matter if the pretty little green anole goes away and is replaced by the less attractive brown anole?).
On the other hand, some of them ARE problems. I the long run (and I mean the LONG run) the earth will work it out, but in the short run, it may be costly to agriculture and homeowners etc.

Not only does Free Trade Communism cost America jobs, and pushes us closer to a Global one-world government (the UN, IMF, World Bank are major pushers of Free Trade)....it brings in unwanted vermin that would have been prevented from coming in the past
In fact, many of the Free Trade agreements pushed and passed by Free Trade Communists prohibit the USA from conducting inspections on much of the stuff coming from outside the USA. I wonder how much of these critters have already got into the USA before customs finally discovered it

It’s the particular type of longhorn beetle. The Asian longhorn beetle devastates trees, mainly maple, pine and that sort. It can’t handle oak (thank God).
This must be a type of longhorn they’ve never seen before. There are also others around that don’t harm trees.

These types of insect can literally destroy millions of acres of timber and cost billions of dollars.
That is why all lumber , even if is used in a pallet , be shipped out of the US & Canada needs to be HT stamped.
HT = Heat Treated to a temp. for a minimum time period to kill any infestation of insects.
