A volcano in southwestern Japan erupted Sunday after nearly two weeks of relative silence, sending ash and rocks up to four kilometres (two and a half miles) into the air, a local official says.

It was not immediately clear if the eruption was a direct result of the massive 8.9-magnitude earthquake that rocked northern areas Friday, unleashing a fierce tsunami and sparking fears that more than 10,000 may have been killed.

Considering the fact that the volcano has erupted something like 10 times since January, I don't think it matters.

The 1,421-metre (4,689-feet) Shinmoedake volcano in the Kirishima range saw its first major eruption for 52 years in January. There had not been any major activity at the site since March 1.

What's going on?

Earthquakes, tsunamis, nuclear meltdowns and now erupting volcanoes...what’s next for Japan?

I wonder how the Japs will rationalize these disasters?

Americans would immediately ask what did I do to deserve this?

The Tsunami that hit Indonesia was the wake up call. These monster quakes will continue until the plates are again comfortable with themselves.

Common sense says that THESE are the events that cause global temp changes....not man and his SUVs.

I reject your false statements!

OwlGorezilla has told us the debate is over and humans are to blame. Well, at least Bush is to blame....but I digress.

It seems like the news media is having a contest to see who can tell the biggest lie.

If common sense were as common as the name implies, 0 would not be in office, and Pelosi, Reid et al would never have been elected.

Yeah, but then Al Gore would not be able to make all that money and the scientists would not get the gorvernment grants unless they make outrageous claims about human pollution. And while they make those claims they ride in private jets, and SUV's.

“Earthquakes, tsunamis, nuclear meltdowns and now erupting volcanoes...what’s next for Japan?”

It wouldn’t suprise me if Japan disappeared into the sea. Islands have been formed and destroyed over the course of history. That is just nature.

We may be witnessing the eradication of a culture that goes back thousands of years.

Prayers go out for the Japanese.

I was wondering if the quakes would trigger volcano eruptions.

I wonder how the Japs will rationalize these disasters?
They will humbly accept them as their inevitable fate, honor their dead, then return to life.
Americans would demand they be 100% protected from every natural disaster known to man, while hundreds of "scientists" pretend they can meet that demand if the selfish taxpayers would just give them millions MORE in gov't grants.
