"Why would you use a Web search instead of a News search?"

To see just how the left spreads Vitriol.

Google defaults to a term linking the shooter to the Tea Party.

It's only upsetting to Conservatives.

"The only way to avoid this is if Google used political criteria to filter their auto-completion suggestions. "

False.

They ONLY have to filter the term that is defaulted to solve this

> Google changed the algos on several Catholic issues.

Can you like me to the article talking about that? I didn’t hear anything about it, and I am both Catholic and keep a close eye on tech news.

In any case, the default is that the algorithms are built to save clicks and typing. They don’t have manpower or time to tweak their searches for a political agenda. You know how many millions of searches per second they handle? Neither do I, but “bazillion” is in the general ballpark. To contextually skew searches leftward takes more work than just letting the searching public be the driving force.

I haven’t used Google in at least 5 years.

I won’t even give them a hit even to check out what you are saying.

I don’t use AOL for similar reasons.

Google is no longer giving those results for the search.

You do know that what they pop up in that list comes from what people are searching. If you and a couple dozen thousand friends put in “jared lee loughner thumb sucker” over and over that’ll wind up on the list too.

Bingo. In fact, I bet if a bunch of us started searching for “Jared Lee Loughner leftist” we could make it a top search suggestion.

Calm down, people. sheesh.

I don't understand what you want them to do - do you want them to remove the term "Tea Party" from all auto-completion suggestions? Or do you want Google employees checking to see if the term "Tea Party" is ever used in a search term that might be considered harmful to the Tea Party, and remove it from auto-complete suggestions if so? Do you realize how much time and effort that would take? And that it's completely subjective and open to some Google employee's interpretation? And that every single politically charged word or words would have to be subjected to the same scrutiny?

Again, you do not want this. Google is just showing you what other people have been searching for. Get mad at Google for failing to honor the Fourth of July - that's a legitimate reason to dislike Google. This isn't.

They do actually censor the suggestion list, mostly away from porn, especially potentially illegal porn. Somebody made a big stink about that a few months ago, trying to say Google was trying to prevent those searches, completely ignoring that you could still type the stuff in long hand you just wouldn’t get it on the list.

It’s funny how consistently Google inspires silly over reaction.

And, incidentally, the “Did you mean?” feature started aggresively changing my query strings, even to the point of searching for the wrong thing, kind of a couple years ago. Now it makes more sense. I don’t use Google anymore, and since December I’ve blocked “*.google*.*” addresses browser level allowing them on a need-to-know basis.

I did the Google search and got three news hits, one from the Guardian newspaper which talked about his “right wing rants” and the other from something called NewsOne, a black-focused website that linked this guy to white supremacists and antisemites.

I would guess that Laughner’s adoration of “The Communist Manifesto,” clearly listed on his YouTube profile, shouldn’t be mentioned. Glad to see an African-American website concerned about Jew hating, though. It’s about time.

The left, like this guy Laughner, is mentally disturbed. It’s disturbingly easy for me to see how the left can gleefully kill their neighbors after reading what they have to write about Sarah Palin, Republicans, the United States, and, now, their ruminations about this shooting. As I told my son this morning, leftists have a long tradition of political assassination in the United States - and Laughner’s friends called him a liberal and leftist - although, in defense of leftists, it seems clear that Laughner was mentally deranged more than anything else. I expect the left not to waste this “crisis” to advance their cause, though. Both this guy and the movement he supported are sick.

Oh, good point, they do that because SafeSearch is defaulted on. Lots of people find porn through Google with SafeSearch off, though :-)

I guess the point is that for them to make any kind of exceptions is a huge pain in the neck for them. They do it for porn because it’s something nobody wants to see pop up unless they’re really looking for it. God forbid it pops up accidentally when you are at work searching or if your child is searching. It’s difficult to do that kind of contextual filtering, though. To claim otherwise is just silly.

This is just the left searching for something that isn't there.

If you want to get upset with Google look at how they turn in innocent peoples names to be turned over for body parts in China. Google is an evil company.

Google makes those suggestions because OTHER users have been doing searches with those keywords.

That's true as a general rule, but Google also seems to able to control the terms that are suggested, and will do so for particularly "hot" search terms.
