Obama Eyeing Internet ID for Americans
CBS News | CNet ^ | 1/7/10 | Declan McCullagh

STANFORD, Calif. - President Obama is planning to hand the U.S. Commerce Department authority over a forthcoming cybersecurity effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.

It's "the absolute perfect spot in the U.S. government" to centralize efforts toward creating an "identity ecosystem" for the Internet, White House Cybersecurity Coordinator Howard Schmidt said.

That news, first reported by CNET, effectively pushes the department to the forefront of the issue, beating out other potential candidates including the National Security Agency and the Department of Homeland Security.

OH HELL NO!

Schmidt stressed today that anonymity and pseudonymity will remain possible on the Internet. "I don't have to get a credential if I don't want to," he said. There's no chance that "a centralized database will emerge," and "we need the private sector to lead the implementation of this," he said.

Nothing the government does as voluntary stays voluntary for long, and everything on the Internet eventually gets put in a database somewhere, if it's done by the government you can damned well bet it will be centralized enough that other agencies can get to it pretty much at will.

Then it will be treated like a Mail box that we buy that is owned by the government. The saying "Your azz belongs to me" will have a new meaning!

Can’t figure out who is crossing our borders illegally, but we can track citizens on the web.

Have a nice day. :)

You think identity theft is a hot crime now? Wait until this becomes law and all of us will become criminals.

Interesting this comes out after Wheeler was murdered.
“Journalist James Fallows friend of Wheelers speaks
John Wheeler was not a man to be trifled with, to hear his friend James Fallows tell it, and he was a passionate and outspoken person on a multitude of issues, including cybersecurity” Wapo and Fox News

Totally unnecessary. They already know who we are.

Trust me about this. If you don’t believe me, just go to some random blog and post a threat against some high official - you WILL have a knock on your door within 30-45 minutes.

But it us still very telling - and what it is telling me is that they (the PTB) are SCARED!!! Cat-scratch-Fever SCARED!!! of the internet!!!

“We are not talking about a government-controlled system. What we are talking about is enhancing online security and privacy and reducing and perhaps even eliminating the need to memorize a dozen passwords, through creation and use of more trusted digital identities.”

"And all the handy backdoors and universal passwords to please any government drone".

What the state of Ohio did to Joe the Plumber overnight can then be done to any of us in milliseconds. Tyrants work so hard, and need every break they can get to make that vital job easier.

“effort to create an Internet ID for Americans, a White House official said here today.”

After reading the article, It seems to me the decision to have a “Internet ID” has already been made. The choice of which agency to handle the “ID” is how the question.

The question should be: does the government have the right to set up an national “Internet ID for Americans”.
Has that question ever been answered?
Elected lawmakers, where are you? Or ARE YOU Irrelevant.
