Southern Democrats are literally a minority party and they have no chance of regaining power in the foreseeable future.

It's a bit early to be saying that, not more than one mid-term election removed from Obama carrying Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, especially when population growth is being driven by relocation from the northeast and West Coast and rapidly increasing Hispanic populations.

Obama carried those Red States and IN with a heavy black turnout. He didn’t have a record then. He does now and he’s a known quantity - a northern black liberal. If the GOP nominates a good candidate AND the economy and exploding debt are still an issue come 2012, he’s eminently beatable. With poll ratings at around 40%, that’s not good re-election territory for an incumbent.
