(CNN) -- An Oklahoma death row inmate received a drug commonly used to euthanize animals Thursday because of a nationwide shortage of sodium thiopental, the drug usually used as the sedative in its three-drug execution cocktail.
John David Duty was convicted and sentenced to die for strangling his 22-year-old cellmate, Curtis Wise, with shoe laces in 2001. At the time, he was serving three life sentences for rape, robbery and shooting with intent to kill from a 1978 conviction.

I'd say he's a good candidate for a dirt nap. Thanks Oklahoma, Oklahoma is OK.

They shoulda used Drano.
Here’s the CNN version.
By the way, the comments at the link from a few liberal scumbags are hilarious. A couple of them think it’s hypocritical to be both pro-life and pro-death penalty, without the faintest sense of irony in their own positions of supporting the execution of innocent babies while opposing the death penalty for brutal wanton murderers.
These are the simpletons who elect scumbags like Ubama.
So he went out like a dog. I like a happy ending.
“sentenced to die for strangling his 22-year-old cellmate, Curtis Wise, with shoe laces in 2001. At the time, he was serving three life sentences for rape, robbery and shooting with intent to kill “
Oh, so he got THREE LIFE SENTENCES, only to kill someone WHILE INSIDE PRISON.
Yeah, great job, Oklahoma. /sarc
Should have done this the first time around.
Don't they know that stuff is habit forming?
.
Watching my Siberian Husky check out painlessly in a few short seconds, I’d imagine this drug worked just fine.
The difference being, I cried when my dog was put down.
They shoulda used Drano.
Cheaper and non-habit forming
if they use it on dogs it’s too good for him.

The death penalty is serious business.
I spent some time in Texas at Huntsville with the staff who performed executions, from the Warden to the Chaplain to the drug room man.
This was shortly after Karla Faye Tucker had been executed.
They used 2 people in the room who pushed 2 sets of 3 syringes each; one was the drugs named in the article, the other set was saline solution.
The executioner I spent time with in the drug room was a slight, sober man who exhibited none of the bravado many voice with regards to exacting ultimate justice. In fact, eagerness was a disqualifier in Texas at the time.
God’s judgement is sufficient, and we are all worthy of death but for our Savior’s sacrifice.
"Oh, so he got THREE LIFE SENTENCES, only to kill someone WHILE INSIDE PRISON. Yeah, great job, Oklahoma. /sarc Should have done this the first time around."Um, you do realize that SCOTUS won't let us execute people for rape, robbery, or shooting with intent to kill, right?
Dead is “GOOD” and I really don’t care how. This man was a monster and had to be destroyed, the sooner, the better.
Seaplaner: Pentabarbital: DOn’t they know that stuff is habit forming?
Not if you give the perp enough the first time. Then there is no habit because there is no user. Simple. Poison in, garbage dead, taken out.
I like the sound of that.
May God bless all the people who help bring closure to the victims’ families.
How could they, he hadn’t killed anybody yet.
Texas performs the constitutional duty of executing capital punishment very professionally. Anybody who gets self gratification out of committing (my phone just changed that word to commuting ... ironic) an execution should never serve as an executioner and does great disservice to the victims and society.
Someone with THREE LIFE SENTENCES should be automatically scheduled for execution. One life sentence should mean just that, anything over one life sentence gets you executed.
What a heartwarming holiday story!
Very uplifting.
“Gods judgement is sufficient, and we are all worthy of death but for our Saviors sacrifice.”
That’s why I disagree with those who want to see child molesters put to death. God will take care of them, just like he did with Jessica Lunsford’s killer (even though he was on death row).
Yet.
Three life sentences SHOULD merit the death penalty. If your crime(s) are heinous enough to warrant multiple life sentences, then you should be required to give up your life since anything over one life sentence is impossible to serve.
If you have three life sentences, what have you got to lose if you commit another crime, just as this man did? You’re going to die in prison, anyway.
Constitutionally, only murders can be punishable by death. Now you can argue the Supreme Court is wrong, but how can Oklahoma do anything about that? It’s like getting angry at a pro-life governor for abortion being legal.
I like your idea...anything kind enough for a beloved pet is TOO GOOD for these wretches!
Oh yeah - use it once, you’ll be using it the rest of your life.

>>On the evening of December 19, Wise allowed Duty to bind him from behind to fake an altercation so Duty would be moved to administrative segregation. While Wise was bound, Duty strangled him to death with a bed sheet. Approximately one hour later, Duty wrote a letter to Wise’s mother which stated: “Mary Wise, Well by the time you get this letter you will already know that your son is dead. I know now because I just killed him an hour ago. Gee you’d think I’d be feeling some remorse but I’m not. I’ve been planning since the day he moved in last Friday. Tonight I finally pulled it off. Would you like to know how I did it? Well I told him I wanted to use him as a hostage. Hell he went right for it, thinking he was gonna get some smokes out of the deal. Well I tied him up hands and feet, then I strangled him. It’s not like the movies, it took awhile. But I really did him a favor as he was to stupid to live. I mean he didn’t know me 5 days and he let me tie him up like that, Please! Besides he was young and dumb and would’ve just been in and out of prison his whole life. So I saved him all the torment. I’ve been in 24 years, wish someone would have done me the same favor back then. I guess you’re thinking I’ll be punished for this. Well not likely in this county. The DA’s here are weak bitches and don’t give a damn about deaths of inmates. We’re all just scum to them. Besides I’m doing 2 life sentences so they can’t hurt me. But you can call them and tell them about this letter, but it wouldn’t do you any good. Well I’m gonna close for now and I’ll tell police in the morning about Curtis.”
He got the death penalty because he told the DA and a physician that if he did not, he would kill again, and that the next victim would be a staff member or a guard.
At least he was in a state that took him at his word.
I witnessed the same thing when we had our GSD put down several years ago. She was gone within seconds of the plunger on the hypodermic syringe being depressed. She gave one sigh, put her head down and was gone.
Still brings tears to my eyes even now.
“...a drug commonly used to euthanize animals...”
Well, finally they wake up and realize that these people are really..........animals!
They really should be put to death in the same manner they killed their prey and prior to the death, the same length of time for suffering and fear before they actually die.
It's not the death penalty - it's just putting them to sleep.
Instructions to the jury should be, "Ladies and Gentlemen of the jury, you must decide whether the convicted felon in this case should be given life imprisonment, or be put to sleep."
Who cares what they used. The first drug renders the individual unconscious. Most people are aware of the “Count backwards from 10 to one.” in oral surgery. You get to 9 and you wake up after the procedure.
The second drug stops the heart. So what is the purpose of even mentioning the drug they used to kill this mutt? He is dead. Case closed.
How about a plastic garbage bag?
And, for them, stabbing a baby in the skull and ripping it limb-by-limb into a bucket is a private, protected choice.
Interesting drug. I googled it. Everyone who doesn’t know what this stuff is should look it up.
The succinylcholine is what i was referring to.
That’s why they won’t let me do it. All I would hear is “Appypappy, quit pushing the button. The prisoner hasn’t arrived yet”
Indeed...
I can think of some cases of inmates murdering inmates. In MA, pedophile priest Fr. John Geoghan was choked to death by an inmate named Joseph Druce. I think Druce had killed before
