"...The first act of the newly empowered Republican Party has been to add a trillion dollars to the deficit. Republicans have now fully embraced the Keynesian arguments that they routinely denounced. John Maynard Keynes argued that when private demand weakens, the government should pick up the slack. He advocated either of two paths: government spending or tax cuts. Republicans have simply chosen the latter course..."

You know things are bad AND weird when Fareed Zakaria starts to make some sense. NONE of these guys are representing us. They are only representing the interests of their big $$$ donors...I would hope that the incomers revolt against the establishment RINOs. The early indications are not giving me much hope.

Oh? Does the Republican Party control both houses of congress? When did that happen?

The Democrats are still in charge of everything. This trillion dollar monstrosity is theirs.

The Republican Party will be newly-empowered Jan 3, not now. And even then, have only the House of Representatives (minus RINOS of course).

Um...there’s a problem here.

ALL of these so-called “budget projections” were counting on the government being able to confiscate more of our income, er, I mean, Bush’s tax cuts not being renewed, and they did NOT take into account the reduction in total revenue that would result from the economic contraction that almost certainly would have occurred if the tax cuts weren’t extended.

Seeing as how the newly elected Republicans have not been seated yet, please explain how they are able to accomplish anything.

The Repubs control whether to filibuster... 60 votes needed to pass anything in the Senate.

And this is what they do with the power they have. I'm telling you guys, the establishment Repubs don't give one rat's ass about the demands of the Tea Party. All they know is that they're headed back into power, and the gravy train for their buddies.

The incoming Tea Partiers had better understand who their real opponents are in the fight against big government...

The newly empowered Republican Party doesn’t take over the House until next month. Right now the Dems are running both houses of Congress and the White House. This foreigner does not understand how our government works, yet the Wash Post gives him a platform to pontificate and show his ignorance.

Stop right there. You can't fix this kind of stupid, whether it is intentional or not.

The "newly empowered Republican Party (which will only be applicable to the House), will not take their seats until after the New Year.

Everything being done in Congress now is still Democrat corruption.

One word: filibuster. If the Dems want to do anything, they can only do it with a 60-vote majority. This was a deal worked out between BHO and Repub leaders. House Dems are furious. The Repubs have all this new leverage, and this is the kind of law they want to push through.

We blew it when we had years of Repub Congress and WH. We are blowing it again.

You're stepping on a nerve.

I do not defend George Bush's spending policies.
I do defend Republican establishment elitists.
I recognize that the GOP must improve, and the Tea Party is intended to be a goad to make that happen.

Fine.

But I see A Democrat in the White House. I see Democrats controlling the House. I see Democrats controlling the Senate.

And I see you attacking the Republicans because a trillion dollar spending bill is being passed.

You're siding with the enemy, as far as I'm concerned -- you're joining the chorus of people who believe this country is having economic troubles because George W. Bush racked up enormous deficits ($162B in 2007, I believe). I know people who ignore Obama's repeated trillion dollar deficits and just ceaselessly attack Republicans for spending too much.

You sound like those asshats.

Again, this is a deal reached with Repub Leaders and BHO... and unfortunately, all of those D.C. Repubs will be in power starting next month. This bad deal illustrates the problem completely ...

The Tea Partiers can't just show up... they have to show up and take over

This guy is so convolutely stupid about economics I don’t know where to begin.

The Bush tax cuts already exist. They are not new spending. They will not cost the govt a billion dollars. By that theory whatever money you do have left should be taxed as well since you keeping it is costing the govt billions and trillions as well.

“This trillion dollar monstrosity” will be identified by almost everyone as Republican because it is a “compromise” forced by Republicans and because the Republicans claim it and because the Republicans could put it off until they have a better Senate in January. Their haste to get it passed is their claim to be the progenitors of it. If it is passed and there is no repeal attempt (I know! it can’t get past the kenyan’s veto!) in January the Republicans including the new ones will own this horror.

Understood.

But I hate it when Repubs shirk responsibility. When I hear BHO saying that this is the "best deal he could get", that implies WE could have gotten a better deal with serious Tea Partiers in a Repub Congress..

Instead, the D.C. Repubs, who will be very much around next year, did what D.C. politicians always do ... cave to special interests. They got out of the way so that their pork could come through on the budget.

And I recognize that the current crop of Republicans could do more to block Obama. But I think, with the current crop of congress critters, it is deeply misleading to say that the Republicans own this monstrosity.

To me, this is like having the Red Sox score 1 run, and the Yankees score 6 runs, and delcaring that the Red Sox own that victory because, without their poor level of play, the victory would not have been achieved.

Yeah, I did believe (and said so years ago on this site) that we were headed for trouble when a Repub WH and complete Repub Congress turned surpluses into decifits and went on a spending spree that headed toward doubling the debt.

I thought we were really headed toward trouble when Paulson decided to bail out his big bank buddies rather than let them fail and make room for more competent players. Capitalism punishes failure... Paulson decided he knew better than to let market forces work things out. Oh no, in his universe, the idiots are rewarded with $14T ZERO INTEREST taxpayer-backed loans at the Fed window..

And now this... not a cutting of spending, but a continuation of the welfare-state unemployment insurance. AND A TAX INCREASE ON ESTATES.

All this and McConnell grinning ear-to-ear. It's too much. These guys REALLY need to be taken out.

Oh - you believe what BHO says?
What ‘special interests are you talking about?
What takes 60 votes? Did you ever hear of the ‘nuclear option’?
How many votes do the dems lack under 60?
oh i c - if 1 or 2 rinos defect the whole party is to blame?

You better think a little
