Surgeon general: 1 cigarette is 1 too many
Ass Press via Atlanta Urinal Constipation ^ | December 8, 2010 | LAURAN NEERGAARD

[This has been edited to fit within the excerpting guidelines.]

Think the occasional cigarette won't hurt? Even a bit of social smoking — or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke — could be enough to block your arteries and trigger a heart attack, says the newest surgeon general's report on the killer the nation just can't kick.

Thursday's report says there's no doubt that tobacco smoke begins poisoning immediately — as more than 7,000 chemicals in each puff rapidly spread through the body to cause cellular damage in nearly every organ.

"That one puff on that cigarette could be the one that causes your heart attack," said Surgeon General Regina Benjamin. "I advise people to try to avoid being around smoking any way that you can."

...this newest report is unusual because it devotes more than 700 pages to detail the biology of how cigarette smoke accomplishes its dirty deeds — including the latest genetic findings to help explain why some people become more addicted than others, and why some smokers develop tobacco-caused disease faster than others.

There is no safe level of exposure to cigarette smoke, whether you deliberately inhale it or are a nonsmoker who breathes in other people's fumes, the report concludes. Nor is there evidence yet to tell if efforts to develop so-called safer cigarettes really will pan out.

or inhaling someone else's secondhand smoke

They've milked the tobacco industry so now it's time to move on to "secondhand smoke"..............With all the anti-tobacco studies that have been conducted over the past 40 years I find it ironic that they have just now discovered that second hand smoke is allegedly causing problems......

It's called "incrementalism".........

Whatever, the F'n govt. is now free to do what it pleases just so long as it pleases those with their agendas.....

Please pass me a french fry before they're banned and hand me a beer before it's taxed beyond affordability like cigarettes have been........Since the tobacco industry is being tapped out, they're now turning elsewhere to make up the loss in revenues and alcohol and french fries are the current target......LOL!

And one twinkie is one too many. Especially for the Surgeon General. Ever seen a picture of Regina? (I would post one but I’m on my way to work)

The very notion of gathering leaves up, drying them out, setting them on fire, and then inhaling the smoke is something that I’ve never considered indulging in.

Go on though, party on.

It is almost still a free Country.

This is Obama's Surgeon General.

Hey Regina honey, I would say one Twinkie is one too many. Knock off the Twinkies and Coke, Mama. I don't think the Surgeon General believes in the First Wookie's healthy eating plans.

Every damn one of Obama's people looks like a freaking SEIU goon. Every damn one of them.

Thursday's report says there's no doubt that tobacco smoke begins poisoning immediately — as more than 7,000 chemicals in each puff rapidly spread through the body to cause cellular damage in nearly every organ.

I have a problem with anyone who is such an intense acolyte of any obsession, that is colors every word that he/she (the person's name was not deemed important, so that tells me something about the poster, too) says.

Reminds me of the period s few years ago when I spent several weeks researching smoking , and how it attracted self-serving control freaks from random strangers to elected busibodies to presumably serious medical researchers.

The one documented fact that I found educational and contradictory, was that, of the 10 longest-lived recorded human beings of the last few hundred years worldwide, all of them smoked into advanced age, all lived at least to age 105, three smoked until shortly before their death, and five smoked until age 95.

The usual response that they might have lived even longer had they not smoked, I find shaky and unpersuasive.

I suspect these experts have no idea how to explain it, so they'd rather not talk about it.

Don’t you just love how the nation’s top health official needs to lose some weight? Speaking of which, just one ounce of extra body fat can clog arteries, cause heart attacks, and cause your d*ck to go limp.

Nanny State PING!

Isn’t Regina Benjamin sorta like that fat lady who was harshing on your cigarette smoke, causing you to get into a fight with her husband?

Regina is the purveyor of anti-scientific fraud designed to whip up hysteria. She should be sent back to the hole from which she was dug.

Second hand smoking is soooo yesterday, now it’s “thirdhand smoke”.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/03/health/research/03smoke.html

It boggles the mind what has happened to this country.

Three of my grandparents were like these folks you describe:

Grandpa: A coal miner for 50 years, he smoked hand-rolled cigarettes his entire life. Age at death: 96. Cause of death: viral infection leading to sepsis, then organ failure.

Grandma: Housewife and occasional seamstress for Gentex Corporation. Age at death: 96 Cause of death: Renal failure due to diabetes

Nana: Housewife and bank employee. Age at death: 103 (2 weeks shy of 104). Cause of death: Stroke.

My other grandfather died of head trauma after slipping on ice and smacking into the curb. Died suddenly 2 weeks later. He was also a smoker, but died at 51 due to this accident.

It is my opinion that these people should be studied extensively to find out what, exactly, they have in ‘em that prevents them from contracting deadly diseases like heart disease and cancer. ALL of these grandparents did NOTHING that would have met with today’s doctors’ approval. They lived as they wanted, ate and drank what they wanted, and of course, smoked cigarettes too. WHAT protected them? If I was a doctor...I’d want to know.

Regards,
