Pathetic. These people get to run their heaters at 80 degrees in the winter while I have to decide between having mine at 65 or 68.

A flawed comparison since many of the Gov’ment programs are “in kind” and not in cash - Medicaid being the biggest standout.

Only true if you have kids though. The government pays people to have kids they can’t afford.

You need to add to that..under the table work for cash. That goes right to the bottom line. Plus sometimes supplemental social security.

Indeed.....this is not a perfect comparison, but is a good reason why many are so frustrated.

Right now, 46% of my salary is taken in federal, state, & local tax before it even hits my bank account. I have less take-home pay now than I did before I went to grad school. Boy was I dumb.

Yep. We have created a society where it is actually more advantageous to work for minimum wage than to take a pay raise.

Looks like the people who pay for the party, don’t get to go to the party

That’s just it. A single person making $14K is barely scraping by, because they typically don’t qualify for many of the benefits available to families.

People are going to start “Going Galt” in greater numbers. Take a minimum wage/part time job and work off the books.

I know of one woman with 2 kids that gets $1650/month from Section 8 plus all the other goodies which in California are a lot more than those listed.

Hey Cap’t
Believe.
Picture this: someone living in a rent free apartment waiting for a grant to pay the electric bill calling an attorney to ask whether the landlord could evict them for no electricity since it wasn’t in the language of the lease!
And to top it off indicating they had never had a job.

Another column could have been those who don’t work at all, but have children out-of-wedlock.

This always struck me as immoral. When I was an apprentice, I was making $15.00/hr, the guy who just entered the country working next to me who couldn't speak a lick of English was being paid $12.00 /hr in cash for the same job but he was bringing home more than me. I really wanted to blow the whistle on my employer but
a) I needed the job and
b) I suspected that the electrical inspectors in CT wouldn't do anything.

I agree the comparison is flawed. It’s WORSE than depicted. The single parent earning $60,000 probably has to work hard for it. The welfare mom gets to sit at home, spend time with her children, and does so at the $60,000 earner’s expense!

Don’t forget a lot of the single moms have live in boyfriends that are off the books. The mothers know the system will penalize them dearly if they marry and/or report the boyfriend’s income.
