NC4: Etheridge-D will call for recount in congressional race

Raleigh, N.C. — Seven-term Democratic Congressman Bob Etheridge on Wednesday said he will call for a recount in his re-election bid, where he trails Republican challenger Renee Ellmers by about 1,600 votes. Ellmers claimed victory late Tuesday, and The Associated Press also declared her the winner in the tight Second District race.

It is my understanding that Ellmers led by more than 2000 votes at the end of the night, which translated to a greater than 1.0% margin which put the race outside any statutory recount, and was declared the winner by AP.

Then, in Etheridge's home area of Sampson County more than 450 votes were "found" - ALL FOR ETHERIDGE - thus dropping the winning percentage to just under 1% enabling Etheridge to call for a recount!

This is statistically impossible, especially in consideration that U.S. Senator Burr was re-elected by 55% to 45% over NC Sec. of State Elaine Marshall.

Let the Democratic public officials in charge of NC's electoral process know that the nation is watching them.

This will give Etheridge’s people time to recanvass any graveyard precincts they may have missed earlier this week. There are also probably a few storerooms that haven’t reported in, and the trunk of the campaign manager’s car needs to be searched more carefully.

I was told this morning that when NC Secretary of State Marshall lost an election, she did exactly what Etheridge is now doing. AND, magically, she also came up with just enough votes to push her over the top.

Fortunately, 1,600 will be a tough number to overcome in a single Congressional district. Gore couldn’t top Bush’s end-of-night 1,600 in the whole of Florida. So, there will have to be some serious, obvious cheating for Etheridge to pull this one out.

When 'votes are found' I want to see photos of place they were found, descriptions of the circumstances and sworn testimony from the finder. Maybe the threat of perjury charges will discourage this. The chain of evidence used to prosecute criminals should be followed with these ballots, and if they can't show the chain was not broken the ballots should be thrown out.
