Copyright lawsuits: almost as easy a revenue stream as patent royalties — and you don’t have to go through the patent process.

The only reason I’ve heard of this comical little bird cage liner, is because I read clips and used links to the full article from F.R.

There I saw the advertising that F.R. had facilitated me finding.

Now this is expressly forbidden. This is an object lesson in shooting yourself in the foot.

How many times will I go visit this news site from here on out? A big fat ZERO is the answer.

Simply brilliant... /s

In “My Cousin Vinny”, the lead character says, “I wanted to win my first case on my own with no help.” His girlfriend that had helped him win the case responds, “Oh my, you go on to win case after case, and have to say thank you to someone who helps you. What a F’n nightmare.”

LVS, hundreds of sites across the internet feeding you new visitors, and you have to say thank you. What a F’n nightmare.

IDIOTS!

Filing these lawsuits isn’t free. Wonder what in the heck this nutty media group is thinking. Perhaps they believe they will get more out of the lawsuits than they spend.

The way I see this: A group of lawyers is making a living by making other people's lives miserable.

You fight this by going after the personal life of each lawyer and making their lives a hell... short of being COSTCOed.

A news site reposting articles as their own is inexcusable, and I hope those sites get reamed. But I hope these sharks run up against a brick wall on the user-submitted sites. There are few things good about the DMCA, but the takedown notice section is there specifically to protect sites like this from liability over user-submitted infringement. I bet this firm hasn’t sent one takedown notice.

JimRob shouldn’t even have to do the pre-screening that he does now. The law says copyright holders are responsible for notifying the site of any claimed infringement. The recent Viacom v. Google decision says sites are not responsible for pre-emptive enforcement.

In checking just one story at LVJR I found that the story had been posted all over the web. How can they claim CE, when what I see is nothing but reprints from other news orgs.

One interesting thing was a para in one AP story, was 1st written in 2007. Yet is reguritated as current info by author.

There is a Firefox add-on that users can easily install to prevent them from visiting or giving ad revenue to the Las Vegas Review Journal or its sister publications.

The add-on is called BlockSite, and is here: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/3145/?src=api

The list of Las Vegas Review Journal sites and sister sites is here: http://claytonecramer.blogspot.com/2010/08/how-to-make-you-dont-accidental-visit.html

I first saw the add-on on The Armed Citizen’s RSS feed last night (they are being sued, too) here: http://www.thearmedcitizen.com/2010/08/19/latest-update/

IIRC, half of The Armed Citizen is FR’s own DaveLoneRanger.

We need to deny the LVRJ & Co., page views and advertising revenue until they put a stop to this idiocy.

Papers repost stories all the time, usually through contracts with AP and UPI. These guys would be suing over original stories unless they’re complete idiots.
