Meet Rich Nugent, the new Dede Scozzafava
Vanity | July 18, 2010 | cc2k

Posted on 07/18/2010 8:31:43 PM PDT by cc2k

Sorry for the Vanity. But I thought Freepers need to know about what's happening down here in Florida along the "nature coast" north of Tampa.

We have another case where the Washington elites think they know better than the people of the district who should be sent to Congress.

Last year, this happened in NY-23. There were back-room dealings that put Dede Scozzafava, a very progressive "Republican" on the ballot. And the Washington establishment poured tons of money into Scozzafava's campaign trying to convince us that any Republican was better than a Democrat. They wanted us as Republicans to support a Pro-choice, pro-union candidate who stood against almost all of the principles that conservatives hold dear.

In the end, their "Republican" candidate dropped out of the race and endorsed the slightly more conservative (than her) Democrat over the Conservative Party of New York's choice, Doug Hoffman.

Enough history. Let's move forward to 2010, and south to Florida's 5th Congressional District.

The incumbent, Ginny Brown-Waite, had announced that she was running for re-election. There was a challenge from a Constitutionalist, 9-12er and TEA Partier, Jason Sager. Sager qualified for the ballot by petition, with more signed petitions than any other Congresional challenger in Florida (possibly more petitions than any congressional challenger in the nation). (author's Note, I live in this district, and I strongly support Jason Sager in this race)

Backroom deal, Ginny's Hand Picked Replacement

With only 20 minutes remaining before the qualifying deadline, Hernando County Sheriff Richard Nugent paid the $10,440 qualifying fee and entered the race. About 5 minutes after the qualifying deadline, Ginny Brown-Waite and Sheriff Richard Nugent held a joint press conference where Ginny announced she was dropping out for health reasons. She endorsed Nugent as her "replacement."

This move angered many in the 5th district. Ginny and Nugent using secret, underhanded tactics, succeeded in preventing other candidates from entering the race to challenge for this seat. Most Republicans would not challenge a sitting incumbent, and did not enter the race out of respect for Ginny.

In last week's debate in Pasco County, the moderator, Tom Jackson of the Tampa Tribune asked Nugent to explain how his entry into the race wasn't "skulduggery." Nugent went over the timeline and explained again, even admitting that one of the purposes of their tactics was to eliminate any competition in the election. In the end, he threw Ginny under the bus, saying, "If you an issue, it's with the Congresswoman, it's not with me." (YouTube Video of his explanation.)

Big DC Funding

This is where Sheriff Nugent and Dede Scozzafava also share some common supporters. In only two months, Nugent has raised a lot of money. Much of his fundraising has come from PACs. Some is from business PACs, trying to buy access and influence. But over half of his PAC support is from leadership PACs run by current members of congress. These same PACs also donated heavily to Dede Scozzafava last year. Here's a summary:

PAC/Campaign Committee Congress Critter to Nugent in 2010 to Scozzafava in 2009
Continuing a Majority Party Action Committee Dave Camp, MI-4 $5,000 $5,000
Every Republican is Crucial PAC Eric Cantor, VA-7 5,000 5,000
Friends of Ginny Brown-Waite Ginny Brown-Waite, FL-5 4,000 1,000 (plus campaign appearance)
Growth and Prosperity PAC Spencer Bachus, AL-6 1,000 5,000
Majority Committee PAC Kevin McCarthy, CA-22 2,000 2,000
New Pioneers PAC Greg Walden, OR-2 1,000 1,000
Shuster for Congress Bill Shuster, PA-9 1,000
The Freedom Project John Boehner, OH-8 5,000 5,000
Vote to Elect Republicans Now PAC Vernon Buchanan, FL-13 2,500

These "Republican Leaders" are financing the campaign of Ginny's hand-picked replacement. They believe they know better than the people of our district who should represent us in the next Congress.

I question why any PAC would get involved in a primary, but for a "leadership PAC" of a sitting member of Congress to be contributing to a candidate in the primary shows a complete lack of respect for the primary process and for the voters of this district.

Freepers, Jason Sager needs our help and support. If you want to learn more about him, check out his website, www.standwithsager.com.

There is another debate scheduled for July 21st at "The Groves" in Pasco county. Come on out and see him debate with the puppet of the Washington elite.

If you like what you see, please consider supporting him with a contribution to his campaign. Remember how we helped Hoffman last year with $9.12 contributions from hundreds (thousands) of Freepers and bloggers everywhere.

If you live in Florida's 5th congressional district, the Primary election is August 24th.

We need to help this guy out. Florida is infested with RINOs like Jeb, Crist, McCollum, Martyinez, Rubio.

Ping.

I remember you folks were helpful spreading the word last year.

This is another case where the DC elites think they get to pick the Representative for a district instead of letting the people decide in a fair primary process.

Another race of note — I’m noit in the district, or even the state, but I will read up on the candidates and hopefully spread the word. The NRC and bigshot PAC’s shouldn’t get away with garbage like this....

“We have another case where the Washington elites think they know better than the people of the district”

I strongly disagree with this assessment. It is most Certainly Not a “Washington elites think they know better” situation.

It is a Washington elites intend to enable the NWO, and the necessary Constitutional destruction that is the driving force here!

It’s called Treason In High (GOP) Places!

The fact that a corrupt business as usual Republican like Congressman Shuster (Shyster) from the 9th District of Pennsylvania has thrown his support behind Sheriff Nugent in this Florida congressional district tells the story to me.

One big difference. You have a chance to vote for another candidate in a primary. The voters in NY-23 never had that option.

The Florida GOP sucks bigtime. They singlehandedly assured the re-election of Bill Nelson and the election of Charlie Crist four years ago. The state party elite are traitors of the worst sort.

Majority Committee PAC Kevin McCarthy, CA-22 2,000 2,000

Yep. Watch for Kevin McCarthy in races like this all across the country. He'll back conservatives here and there, but when it's a tight race he always finds a way to come down on the side of the RINO. Kevin was there for Scozzafava last year early on and succeeded in talking some big name conservative into staying off of Hoffman's campaign at first.

Kevin has a long history of RINO activism in California and has spent the last six years or so trying to whitewash his liberal stain. Deep down thought these people never change.

Thanks for pointing this out.

She was the candidate for the GOP. Her race was the first on called that night. Why would you say that the GOP wanted Bill Nelson over our candidate?

The State GOP wanted McBride to be the candidate. Once Harris beat McBride in the primary, they basically did nothing to help her in her campaign against Nelson.

I have to say I was shocked that she lost. FREEPERS were saying she was going to cream Nelson and even showed beautiful pictures of her on a horse. I saw some FREEPERS get blasted big time for just hinting that she may lose. FREEPERS went off on that FREEPER big time. Unfortunately she did lose.

Actually, primaries depend on turnout.

Sager has boots on the ground. And he's had signage out for a month or more now along all the major highways in the district. 4'x4' signs at key intersections and along major traffic arteries.

He's also been to all the major (and minor) TEA Party groups, 9-12 groups, campaign for liberty chapters and has the support of the Ronald Reagan Republican Assmeblies.

And in the forums and debates, Sager is energized, talks from knowledge and from his heart, never from notes, and is very impressive. Nugent reads from his notes (probably given to him by someone on his DC based staff), and changes his story a lot.

Nugent is relying on direct mail. He's sent out 3 or 4 rounds of 4 page glossy brochures. He's spending a ton of money, which he is raking in from the PACs and current house members, as well as from the employees of a couple of developers and construction companies down here. One company, even the office secretary has given $2,400 to Nugent for the primary.

If money can buy elections, Nugent has the money to buy this seat.

If the people matter, Sager has a chance. But he does need some money to spread his message in these last 4 weeks.

Any help from online contributions will go a long way with Sager.

Spread the word, please.

Ping.

Isn’t Jason Sager one of your “Restore the Constitution” Candidates?

If he hasn’t signed on for that yet, it’s just that he hasn’t seen it. Let me know and I’ll send Sager a reminder about that.
