Nixon official (Moynihan) warned of global warming

"Goodbye New York. Goodbye Washington, for that matter."

These statements come from a White House memorandum about the possible effects of global warming on ocean water levels — a memo written on Sept. 17, 1969, decades before the issue came to the attention of the public....

"I would think this is a subject that the Administration ought to get involved with," Daniel Patrick Moynihan wrote. At the time, he was an adviser, notable as a Democrat in the Nixon administration.

From 1961 to 1976 Moynihan held several important positions in the administrations of presidents Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon and Ford. He served as the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations before New York voters elected the Democrat to the Senate. He served there from 1977 to 2001. He died from complications from a ruptured appendix two years later....

Nixon established the Environmental Protection Agency and had an interest in environmental matters. In one memo, Moynahan noted his approval of the concept of the first Earth Day, to be held April 22, 1970.

"Clearly this is an opportunity to get the President usefully and positively involved with a large student movement," Moynahan says. Moynahan saw it as an opportunity for Nixon to solicit input from environmental experts...

One intelligence report, written the day the Yom Kippur War started in October 1973, said neither Syria nor Egypt had the capability to launch incursions into Israel.

"Israeli air superiority, in any case," the memo said, "is expected to quickly bunt any offensive thrust across the cease-fire line."

The name of the memo's author has been blacked out by military censors, which may have saved him or her some embarrassment.

"This is one of the worst reports in U.S. intelligence history," Naftali laughed, noting Egyptian and Syrian forces came crashing into Israel within hours...

So, what were they using for scientific evidence back then?

Moynihan was wrong about global warming but he was one of the last Democrats to truly love his country.

He pushed for the Venona transcripts to be declassified which cast a favorable light on McCarthy's hunt for communists in government.

He also championed the idea that deviancy should be rejected and defined down instead of celebrated.

He also suggested benign neglect of minorities instead of using socialism to addict them to the government dole and diminish their abilities and initiative.

Yet, I suppose in the end Moynihan mistakenly enabled communists because of his environmentalist views.

IMHO gun control has killed more people than climate change, cooling or warming, ever has or ever will.

This article shows just how deeply engrained the Progressive movement is into all of politics.

To quote an old Southern Racist, "There is not a dimes worth of difference in the two parties."

Harry Truman was a decisive man when he ended WW II, then the Commies in FDR's State Department, re-schooled him and we then learned how to fight wars without ever winning one.
