School revokes yearbooks over comment

Wallingford, Connecticut (WTNH) - An annual year-end tradition is tarnished for seniors at a school in Wallingford.

At a time of year when most high school seniors are signing each other's yearbooks, students at Sheehan High School are turning them back in and wondering when they'll get them back.

The Wallingford School District has recalled them after a comment printed in the book came to their attention.

Amber Schumacher, of Wallingford, explained, "There was a saying under the 'I remember' section that had been put in there, and the parent of the child who the saying was about -- I'm not giving any names -- felt that it was offensive to them."

So now seniors are being asked to voluntarily return the yearbooks.

News 8 found a sample of some of the photos in Sheehan’s 2010 yearbook online -- but no finished copy -- and nobody is giving specifics about what was printed.

Wallingford School Superintendent Doctor Sal Menzo says they are working with the company that manufactures the books on a way to redact the comment that he says could be seen as offensive.

But the clock is ticking down to graduation day and students are getting impatient.

"Kids are kind of p.o.’d about it, not too happy,” said Chris Camerato. “They purchased them and they don't want to give them back to the school and everything."

"Most of the seniors are upset about it, some of them don't really care,” Maureen Hinman commented. “But most of them are really upset about it because, like, it's their property people have been saying."

Students News 8 talked to Wednesday say most kids didn't even notice the comment. But Superintendent Dr. Menzo says the school wants to err on the side of caution.

Dr. Menzo stated, quote, "These are memories that they're going to have for the rest of their lives, and we want to make sure they're appropriate."

The students say they expect to get the yearbooks back before the end of the school year.

Yes, please, only memories that are deemed "appropriate."

They want to make sure the memories of their high school days were “appropriate.” Kind of an oxymoron. Most of the good memories of high school were from inappropriate moments!

Anyway, it was one of my jobs on the yearbook staff to proof read this stuff. But we ended up putting more “secret” stuff in than we took out. Take some to time actually read the small print in your yearbook. You might find some gems.

The problem is that the students hardly do any work on their yearbooks any more. The photos are contracted out, the templates are all cookie cutter, and the writing is horrible. Its a wonder anyone is even responsible for this stuff any more.

Well, to be fair, it might have been a remark of the caliber you could expect to find in "National Lampoon's 1964 High School Yearbook."

Regards,

Proper response: “I sure would love to turn in my yearbook but the dog ate it, it was left out in the rain, and then I recycled it because I care about the planet. But I will sponsor a tree to be planted in Zimbabwe in solidarity with your mental cleansing effort.”

Voluntary turn in?

Then don't.

Simple.

Um... I’m sitting here at my computer putting together the yearbook for our high school. Admittedly, I’m not really working at it, since I’m here, but I have Photoshop and the update for PageMaker up on my screen. So...

What’s the offensive saying?

The seniors at our little school - all 35 of them - traditionally have a page set aside for each of them, including a “saying” at the bottom of the page.

I sure would like to know what that saying was. My bet is that someone mentioned God.

God forbid. LOL

I can’t even begin to describe how wrong this statement is, on soooo many levels,

Definitely sounds like an Obama voter.

My word, how bad could such a remark be?

I saw the word "voluntary," but the rest of the story sure didn't sound like it was. Maybe it was a mandatory voluntary turn-in?

I wouldn’t especially if I had many signatures already. Of course now a days with Facebook, it is easier to keep in contact with classmates. My class (Class of 87) has about 93 folks on Facebook and we only had about 204 graduates. Anyway i guess it is up to the individual if you want to hand it in or not.

While the grammar is atrocious, I agree with the sentiment. That's exactly how I feel every time I have to cut a check to Uncle Sam.

Damn straight, i wouldn’t give them mine back.

I kind of wish my kids never saw mine, with all the inappropriate stuff my friends wrote in there, but it can’t be undone. They know I wasn’t a nerd, that’s for sure.

censor

–verb (used with object)
6. to examine and act upon as a censor.
7. to delete (a word or passage of text) in one's capacity as a censor.

It would be interesting to know just WHAT is being censored here. Did someone put "GOD BLESS OUR CLASS!" or something equally 'offensive' in the yearbook? Maybe it was "ALLAH BLESS ISLAM!", eh? /sarc

"REMEMBER WHEN (GIRL) GOT HOMESCHOOLED?"
She was picked on so much at Sheehan that she was temporarily homeschooled until she later switched to LH. GET OVER IT!
