It's probably not going out on a limb to predict that the state House of Representatives, following the lead of the Senate, will override Gov. Phil Bredesen's veto of the guns in bars bill this week.
Two statewide polls show Tennesseans are strongly opposed to the idea, but the National Rifle Association, which won't rest until there are guns in every honky-tonk, biker bar and strip club, has threatened legislators' re-election efforts if the legislation fails. Search our databases
Unless a developing lawsuit by restaurant servers is successful, Tennesseans will soon have the right to pack heat in any restaurant or bar that serves alcohol and doesn't explicitly forbid it.
The bright side is that people have the right to show their displeasure with this new policy in two ways. First, don't patronize restaurants and bars without signs in the window barring entry to armed patrons.
As foolish and irresponsible as this law is, it does make this small gesture of respect for private business rights. Restaurateurs don't like the stigma that a no-weapons sign carries, but it could become a kind of welcome mat for diners who prefer gun-free dining.
There's another way for Tennesseans to register their displeasure with guns in bars.
An election in the fall presents an opportunity for voters to send a message to lawmakers that there are consequences for their actions.

So, am I missing something here - if the voters REALLY are against this, then why don’t the legislators simply follow the will of the people - and show the NRA the door, and then coast to re-election on a what is a ‘very popular’ position on a key issue????

There was another article from Arizona over the weekend - they interviewed owners that figured out that bad guys don’t pay much attention to signs, but good guys with guns do...and they let the owners know it - and the owners took those signs down nice and quick.

Gun control in Chicago - on the average 12 to 15 dead “A NIGHT”. Baltimore - 7 dead Sunday night. And there is more mayhem, foolishness, and murder taking place in every Inner City that is infected with Marxist Ideas.

This part is a lie. TN has a lot of permit holders out there so I doubt this statement is true. There is a big Mall in the town I work in that has No Firearms signs posted and it's a ghost town. I don't know why they are still in business.
I am a Carry Permit holder in Tennessee and I can tell you how those “polls” got that result. How would you answer the question... “Do you agree with people drinking in a bar while carrying their pistol?” When the question is posed correctly I am sure the response is different.
There have been many times I have had to relinquish my right to carry just because a restaurant has a bar. Even though I am not drinking and have no intention stepping foot near the spirits. In fact, I don’t like the idea of having a bar in an establishment that serves food to minors. If you want to drink, keep it away from the kids and keep the kids away from the drunks, but I’m a purist.
“Gun Free Zone” = “Target Rich Environment” for criminals and mass murderers.
I agree. There are several ‘family’ restaurants in my area that have a bar (Applebees, Red Lobster, etc). We like several of them due to good food but we don’t drink. There is no reason to ban guns carried by permit holders in a restaurant that serves food to non-drinking patrons. If a bar has a sign that says ‘no minors under drinking age allowed’ it might be different but I don’t recall seeing anything like that.

These polls are bogus! I CCW, I don’t drink when we go out to dinner. Hubby has 1 beer with dinner. We are not the problem. There was nothing wrong with the first bill except we have a demORAT gun hating governor, who has body guards where ever he goes and doesn’t have to fear the criminal element in Memphis, the highest crime area in the entire state!
It’s the criminals with long criminal histories with stolen guns that are the problem. IF states did their job and locked the SOB’s up for their full sentences we’d have less crime. And make the punishment fit the crime they commit.

WTH??! Hes talking about the Bible Belt, for Petes sake! What strip clubs? What honkytonks? Biker bars? I live in Tennessee and I have never seen a biker bar. Last week I did see over 200 motorcycle riders escorting a fallen soldiers coffin to the gravesite to keep the Westboro Baptist Church protesters from trying anything funny. And if they would poll normal people instead of the freaky liberals in Memphis he might have come up with the real poll results.
I live in Tennessee, too. A few monthes ago we went to a restuarant where they had an upstairs dining room for anyone over 18. The owner said they served alcohol on both floors. The upstairs was to protect the children from smokers!

You are right, the question is rigged, sorta like so when did you stop beating your wife with no correct answer but the one they want.
I listened to the local talk station out of knoxville this morning and all were “strong supporters of the 2nd Amendment...” yet all were opposed to the law, and their reactions were based on the governors statement guns and alcohol don’t mix. Well that is a nice cliche but it doesn’t tell me why you vetoed the bill. If a permit holder is drinking alcohol and carrying he is already violating the law and still would be even after this law went into effect.
If I go to an Outback to eat and I don’t drink and carry what is the problem? Do they honestly think that the criminals will not carry anyway in these establishments?
Those signs are a wonderful idea! They could post them outside of Luby’s and McDonald’s. Hooray, a bunch of left wing fruitcakes have just solved the problem of gun violence in The United States.
