RALEIGH, N.C. Republican officials are working to derail the campaign of a tea party supported candidate in North Carolina circulating documents from the man's messy divorce that depict him as a pot smoker who has called himself the messiah.
It's a risky move for state and national party leaders trying to harness the power of the tea party movement without letting it spin out of their control.
Tim D'Annunzio, a congressional candidate in North Carolina's most competitive district, has run an anti-establishment campaign with vows to dismantle entire branches of the federal government. His ideas have drawn support from tea party activists, and he has raised more money from individuals than his GOP rival while also contributing more than $1 million to his own campaign.
Republican leaders in both Raleigh and Washington, however, are worried about his electability in November if he wins a primary runoff next month. They're publicizing court documents about D'Annunzio's past legal, martial and business troubles and denouncing him as unfit for office.

I am from the next CD over. D’Nnunzio’s campaign has been pretty much self financed and has been going on forever, like at least two years. The guy has a mess of $$, from where??
His opponent in the run-off, Harold Johnson, is the retired sportscaster from the local ABC outlet. He jumped into the campaign about six months ago, IIRC. His likeability factor is off the charts, a contrast to his opponent. Also, this down to earth type has a personality quotient that is sky high. The guy has always been a favorite in the area and I have been here 26 years. I have not heard anything negative/scandalous about him.
Johnson, who is about 68, is not native to NC. I think he is from NJ or eastern PA but he has been here about 28-30 years. He has campaigned on ‘you don’t spend it if you don’t have it’, you take care of yourself, also he says he is not going to DC to have another career.
Were I in that district I would vote for Johnson, strictly on the stability factor alone. These rumors are not new on D’Nnunzio. The DEM, Larry Kissell is beatable but not by D’Nnunzio.
I caught him on WBT and I can believe HE thought he was the Tea Party candidate, and that would be about it. From what I
saw he ran a very negative campaign with a lot of personal baggage.

Hi CD,
Long time no ping.
Where is “The Candidate” these days?
They’re publicizing court documents about D’Annunzio’s past legal, martial and business troubles ....
....and it is just this very type of muck raking that turns off this conservative minded voter. Me thinks the Republicans are running scared that this guy wins and they are left sitting out on the curb twiddling their fingers and moaning the blues.
Yeah I agree. I was addressing D’Annunzio’s claim as well, not what you were saying.
Gotcha.
Thank God that D’Annunzio didn’t get to 40% in the first round, huh?
“Thank God that DAnnunzio didnt get to 40% in the first round, huh?”
Yeah I hope he doesn’t beat Johnson because really have a great opportunity to get rid of Kissell.
I wouldn’t be surprised. The only advertising I caught from D’annunzio was calling Johnson an empty suit. I’m down in Myrtle so I just catch some things on WBT.
Those Tea Parties sure can pick big winners, huh?
Hey Now.. Doesn’t every family have a ‘crazy aunt’ or two locked in the attic?
at least he comes to the task ‘battle-hardened’..
Been there, done that. He's got my vote!
The idea that D’Annunzio is “the Tea Party candidate” in this race is pure fiction created by the extremely lazy political writer for the Charlotte Observer, Jim Morrill.
