Well, I have done it! I have read the entire text of proposed House Bill 3200: The Affordable Health Care Choices Act of 2009 I studied it with particular emphasis from my area of expertise, constitutional law. I was frankly concerned that parts of the proposed law that were being discussed might be unconstitutional. What I found was far worse than what I had heard or expected.

CBO doubles some health care spending estimates (How many more lies will Americans accept?)

The Congressional Budget Office has doubled the estimated increases of some costs resulting from the sweeping health care reform legislation passed this year.

A CBO report sent Tuesday to Rep. Jerry Lewis of California, the ranking Republican on the House Appropriations Committee, said the estimated rise in discretionary spending - which is spending requiring annual congressional authorization - over the first 10 years under the new legislation could exceed $115 billion.

Administration Threatens to Veto Health Spending Bill After Price Tag Jumps (Obama The Liar!)

The Obama administration threatened to veto parts of its own health care bill after budget scorekeepers found that the package would add at least $115 billion more to government health care spending.

President Obama's budget office charged Congress with finding $115 billion in spending cuts or tax increases to offset the price tag hike. The figure approached the amount of money the Congressional Budget Office previously estimated the law would save, and pushed the total 10-year cost of the package past $1 trillion. It comes after a separate Medicare office report found the bill would raise spending by about 1 percent over the next decade.

'Ban alcohol loyalty points to save health'

More than 5% of Scots are alcohol dependent In this week's Scrubbing Up, Dr Catriona Morton says drastic measures are needed to save Scottish drinkers from themselves.

In order to curb dangerous drinking, supermarkets must be prevented from selling cheap alcohol and awarding loyalty points with purchases, she says.

We are facing a new pandemic - alcohol as a major risk factor for poor health.

In Scotland, the majority of adults are exceeding recommended drinking limits and 5% (probably more) are alcohol-dependent. Voluntary codes, hazard-labelling and NHS health promotion efforts are simply not working - so we need to hit the drinking culture at the heart by introducing minimum pricing, and removing supermarket loyalty points for alcohol.

Scotland now has the world's eighth-highest level of alcohol consumption.

We need to do something now to protect not only the health of Scots but the NHS.

Health care fails small businesses (RomneyCare Epic Failure)

NOT LONG AFTER President Nixon took the unprecedented step of imposing peacetime wage and price controls, the American people learned a basic economic lesson: Artificial controls don’t work unless underlying costs are controlled.

Four decades later, the Patrick administration is imposing controls on small business health insurance rates. The move will prove to be little more than an election-year reprise of Nixon’s failed effort.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Obama administration argues in its first court response to a challenge against the new health care law that Congress can require Americans to buy health insurance.

The argument by Justice Department lawyers comes in a lawsuit that a conservative group, the Thomas More Law Center, filed in federal court in Detroit on March 23, the same day President Barack Obama signed the new law.

NYT: State AGs lawsuit could end up ‘eviscerating’ Obamacare

Over at Cato’s excellent blog, Michael Cannon flags this New York Times article noting that notable liberal legal scholars think the lawsuit being brought against the individual mandate in health care reform by 20 state attorney general is persuasive:

Some legal scholars, including some who normally lean to the left, believe the states have identified the law’s weak spot and devised a credible theory for eviscerating it…

Health workers’ shock at NHS survey that asked: how cool was Hitler?

It was a question that left NHS staff gasping in disbelief: the survey wanted to know how “cool” they would rate Adolf Hitler, on a scale of one to five.

“Cool” is not a word usually associated with the Nazi dictator who plunged the world into a war that cost tens of millions of lives. To add to their discomfort, the ambulance employees were then asked to rate Hitler in comparison with their own chief executive.

Obamacare is a socialist law designed to take money from some Americans and use it to benefit others. The health care bill signed into law by President Obama is full of hidden time bombs. One costly provision buried in the lengthy reconciliation bill at the last minute has taxpayers covering long-term at-home care for the elderly. Through the so-called Community Living Assistance Services and Support Act (CLASS Act), Americans will find between $150 and $250 taken out of their paychecks each month to cover this program nobody knew about.

US files first defense of health care law in court

WASHINGTON — Critics who allege that Congress overstepped the U.S. Constitution by requiring Americans to carry health insurance are "flatly wrong," the Obama administration said Wednesday in its first court defense of the landmark health care law.

Congress acted well within its power to regulate interstate commerce and to provide for the general welfare, Justice Department lawyers argued in a 46-page brief filed in federal district court in Detroit. For the courts to overturn President Barack Obama's signature domestic legislation would amount to unwarranted interference with the policymaking authority of Congress, they added.

Democrats know their new health care law is not gaining any new fans, and the new numbers coming out of the Congressional Budget Office prove what everybody else had been saying all along. The health care legislation is too expensive, and we cannot afford it, but don’t tell that to Congressman Anthony Weiner, New York Democrat. Chasing after Mr. Weiner at after he spoke at a union gathering of nurses, I asked him about what he thinks about the CBO coming out with numbers that went way over the projected estimate prior the health care vote in March.

“We have to pass the bill so that you can find out what is in it,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) told us just weeks before Congress passed President Barack Obama’s health care plan. Well, the nation’s post-passage Obamacare education continued yesterday when the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) confirmed that the federal government will have to spend an additional $115 billion implementing the law, bringing the total estimated cost to over $1 trillion. The estimate had been requested before passage of the bill by Rep. Jerry Lewis (R-CA), but the CBO was too overwhelmed with the Democrats’ other constant revisions to the law to get back to Lewis before the final vote.
