Great idea, but really difficult to develop.

I worked on a program to investigate the feasibility of building one of these about 15 years ago. AFAIK all the designs are based on Scramjet technology, which is useful but has many challenges to implement for a missile.

The control system challenge is not to be taken lightly, too. Controlling a missile traveling that fast is really challenging.

The CNN anchors were cooing over this thing just the other day. I think the announcement is another Obama head fake, timed to offset public unease about our nuclear disarmament. CNN’s talking point was that it could hit Osama’s hiding place in Afghanistan, a notion that the Dems have been cynically peddling for a while now in place of a real, muscular commitment to fighting terror. This is just an extension of that.

Absolute BS!!! Secretary Cohen told Pakistan that he was sending missiles to the Afghanistan camp several hours before they attacked. Pakistanis sympathetic to Osama Bin Laden warned him and he was long gone before the Cruise Missiles got to the aspirin factory in the Sudan and the camp in Afghanistan. Shoot, I had time to call Senator Trent Lotts office in Jackson four hours before the attack and tell Lott that an attack was imminent. Clearly one third of the freepers here knew the attack was coming. A missile that would get there in one second would have been too late.
