Ohio Governor: Kasich 49%, Strickland 38%

Republican challenger John Kasich has extended his lead over incumbent Democrat Ted Strickland to 11 points in Ohio’s gubernatorial race.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey of Ohio voters finds Kasich leading Strickland 49% to 38%. Six percent (6%) prefer another candidate, and seven percent (7%) are undecided.

Last month, Kasich held a six-point lead - 47% to 41% - over Strickland, mirroring the 47% to 40% lead he had in early January. These results also show little change from the first survey of the contest conducted in December.

Still don’t like Kasich.

But it was bound to happen. Taft, Voinovich, DeWine and the coin scandeled Republicans in state screwed up so badly the voters had to toss everyone out just to clean house which resulted in Democrats. Democrats took the opprtunity and squandered it by being bad stewards so now they’ll be kicked out. If Kasich and the others there are smart they won’t revisit their previous mistakes but I’m cynical. Just hope they don’t ruin it this time with a presidential election around the corner. States like Ohio, Virginia and Florida need to be managed well by republicans to tilt these states the right way.

This is why we need the Secretary of State as much as we need the Governor; so we can stop the thief organizations like ACORN and control redistricting.

Although he voted for the 1994 federal ban on assault weapons, Kasich said that lawmakers should have a cooling-off period after high-profile acts of violence before trying to pass new laws. Kasich noted that the two students who killed 13 people and themselves last month in Littleton, Colo., violated 19 existing gun laws. “There were already a bunch of laws,” Kasich said. “The kids didn’t pay attention to the laws. I don’t think new laws will solve all the problems.”

Both Kasich and Strickland were known to buck their party on high-profile occasions, such as a 1994 crime bill touted by President Bill Clinton that banned assault weapons and provided hiring grants for local police departments.

Kasich backed it after negotiating with Democrats to knock $3.3 billion from the package. Kasich also argued that the assault-weapons provisions of the bill wouldn't infringe on the rights of Ohio sportsmen.

Strickland voted against the bill, even though it was a priority for Clinton, because it contained the assault-weapons ban he opposed. That vote and others earned Strickland an "A" rating from the National Rifle Association. The gun rights group couldn't provide a grade for Kasich because his retirement predated its computer system, but spokesman Andrew Arulanandam described Kasich's record as "mixed" because of the assault-weapons vote and several others the NRA disagrees with.

What about Blackwell? The Taft Republicans in this state PURPOSELY did not back him after he beat out "next-in-line" Establishment favorite Jim Petro. Did Blackwell have a chance? Probably not because of the awful job that Taft and the gang did, but he was a real candidate.
